Nine, including five women, to undergo two-year community rehab for drug abuse
SIBU: Nine individuals, including five women, have been ordered by the Belaga Circuit Court to undergo two years of community-based rehabilitation for drug abuse offences.
The Sibu District National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) said the order, effective June 24, was issued under Section 6(1)(b) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.
All individuals, aged between 30 and 59, are from Sungai Asap, Belaga, and had tested positive for drugs during operations carried out in February and April.
"Four of the women are housewives, while another works as a general worker. The male offenders are all farmers. The group also includes a married couple aged 35 and 36,' an AADK spokesperson told Bernama.
As part of the order, they must report to Sibu AADK monthly and participate in rehabilitation programmes in the Kapit Division.
"They are also expected to make a firm commitment to stay drug-free and avoid relapse,' the spokesperson added. - Bernama

'Yoe Gomen Gang' Busted After Targeting Schools, Govt Offices For Cash
MELAKA, June 26 (Bernama) -- Melaka police have busted the 'Yoe Gomen Gang' after eight cases of breaking into schools and government offices in the Melaka Tengah district since April, with the arrest of three members recently. Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Christopher Patit said all the men, aged 35, 36 and 40, were arrested in a raid on a resort condominium in Tanjung Kling at about 1.50 am on June 21. He said all the suspects, who are unemployed, targeted school offices, district education offices and several other government offices to steal cash found on the premises, involving a loss of RM9,200. "The modus operandi of the Yoe Gomen Gang is to break into the premises involved between 1 am and 4.30 am by prying open the office doors, usually the backdoor, using a screwdriver. "Based on initial investigations and the suspects' confession, six of the eight cases committed by the 'Yoe Gomen Gang' were school offices while the other two were other government offices," he said at a press conference here today. He said the gang of burglars was also involved in two similar cases in the Alor Gajah and Jasin districts (one each) as well as one case each outside Melaka, in Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur. He said the stolen money was used to pay down payment for motorcycles which were then used to commit the crimes. Christopher said a check of the criminal records of the gang leader, known as Yoe, found that the suspect had 27 prior records, with 24 under Section 457 of the Penal Code for breaking, entering and theft. He said another gang member known as Fadil, 36, has 15 criminal records under Section 457 of the Penal Code besides two drug cases while his 40-year-old brother known as Awe has six criminal records including one case of break-in and theft.

Govt To Expand NSRC To Cover All Cybercrimes, Establish 24/7 Response Network
KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) -- The MADANI Government has agreed to expand the role of the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) to cover all forms of cybercrime, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced. He said that a nationwide 24-hour response network, driven by coordination across multiple government agencies, will also be established to enhance cybercrime response capabilities. 'The strengthening of the NSRC will involve integrating local expertise, improving inter-agency coordination, and increasing human resources,' he said in a Facebook post. The Prime Minister said he had earlier chaired a Special Meeting of the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN) to evaluate immediate measures to bolster the NSRC. Anwar revealed that since 2022, nearly 4.7 billion online scam attempts have been recorded - a staggering and worrying figure that demands urgent and coordinated action. The Prime Minister said the Home Ministry and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have been tasked with fast-tracking the implementation of the NSRC's new structure, which includes clearly defining its role to ensure it is easily accessible and understood by the public. A no wrong door approach will also be adopted to simplify the complaint and assistance process, allowing victims to seek help from any agency without being redirected, he said. 'I urge all agencies to act more proactively and think ahead to ensure comprehensive protection for the people. 'At the same time, our national cyber defence readiness must continue to be enhanced, both domestically and in collaboration with international partners,' he added.

Govt urged to consider total vape ban amid youth abuse, drug risks
Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: A Form Two student collapsing from a school rooftop after inhaling a drug-laced vape is just one of many disturbing incidents fuelling renewed calls for the government to impose a total ban on electronic cigarettes. The Malaysian Council for Tobacco Control (MCTC) said the growing exploitation of youth, rising public health risks and emerging links to illicit drugs and organised crime require urgent and decisive government action. Its secretary-general Muhammad Sha'ani Abdullah said while an immediate ban may not be feasible due to stock and distribution challenges, the government must begin with a strict prohibition on advertising and promotions. He said the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), which is already in effect, provides a strong legal foundation to enforce restrictions on advertisements, promotions and online sales of vape products, including those containing controlled substances or illicit drugs. He noted that when vape advertisements are openly displayed, it gives the public the impression that these products are permissible. "In physical stores, we understand there may be delays in removing vape displays due to cost and logistical issues. But for electronic boards, shopfronts or highway billboards, all it takes is a directive to take them down and yet, they continue to run," he told reporters. He was speaking at a press conference titled 'Drugs in Vape', held in conjunction with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2025 and World No Tobacco Day, at the Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (PEMADAM) headquarters here today. Also present was Hashim Anang, PEMADAM Media and Promotion Bureau chairman as well as a member of the National Anti-Drug Council, a non-governmental coalition. Despite growing awareness of vape-related harm, Muhammad Sha'ani said many students continue to smuggle the devices into schools, often hiding them under motorcycle seats along with mobile phones. He cited the case of a Form Two student in Perlis who reportedly became intoxicated after using a so-called "mushroom vape", resulting in a dangerous incident that required police intervention. He added that allowing vape industry players to negotiate regulations would only benefit corporate interests while putting public health, particularly that of the younger generation, at continued risk. Even more alarming, he said, were recent findings by police, showing that some seized vape liquids contained not only nicotine, but also illicit drugs. "Malaysia has already committed to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) 2003, which outlines the eventual phasing out of the tobacco industry. We have declared 2040 as the Tobacco Endgame. "The same commitment must apply to vape. This is not an ordinary business, it is a growing threat to public health," he stressed. — BERNAMA
