Researchers at Louisiana State University have created a sustainable way to use biodegradable Mardi Gras beads after the festivities are over.
Mardi Gras is almost over.
Beginning as a religious holiday observed prior to the Christian Lenten season, Mardi Gras has since expanded from a single day of observation to weeks (or months) of partying.
The festivals and celebrations in the weeks leading up to the Lenten season are celebrated across the world, from France to Brazil and beyond. And, in the U.S. although it is celebrated in other cities like Mobile, Alabama, St. Louis, Missouri, Galveston, Texas and cities throughout Louisiana, it's most famously celebrated in New Orleans, Louisiana.
New Orleans takes Mardi Gras seriously, with traditions including king cake and parades beginning in January and lasting for weeks until the actual holiday itself.
Here's everything to know.
When is Mardi Gras 2025?
This year, Mardi Gras, which translates from French to "Fat Tuesday," is on March 4.
Ash Wednesday is on March 5, the day marking the start of the 40-day Lenten season that culminates with Easter.
Why does New Orleans celebrate Mardi Gras?
Although it is a Christian holiday now, Mardi Gras is a holiday that dates back thousands of years to pagan spring and fertility rites, according to the History Channel. Mardi Gras, also often called Carnival or Carnaval, is celebrated in countries around the world with large Roman Catholic populations.
Louisiana was colonized first by the French before it became part of the U.S., and has retained strong French and Cajun culture and traditions, including Mardi Gras.
When are the 2025 Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans?
There will be plenty of parades around New Orleans on Tuesday, March 4. There will even be parades for dog lovers after the official carnival season ends.

Dua Lipa Just Wore the Trendiest Floral French Manicure
Every time I open the Instagram app, I'm hoping there's a new Dua Lipa photo dump. She always delivers, whether it's a new vacation destination, a cool outfit I def can't afford, pics with her fiancé Callum Turner, or the latest makeup trend (still not over those green lashes, btw). I'm living vicariously! Lately, though, her feed has been filled with all of the manicures she's been sporting on her Radical Optimism Tour. And those I can actually copy, including the most summer-coded look she just dropped: a set of floral French tips, complete with the cutest Y2K rhinestones. The singer shared how excited she is to play her sold-out stadium show in Liverpool with a set of summery, blingy nails. I mean, they really do scream "four sold-out stadium shows," right? Although her nights at Wembley Arena in London were the main event, her manicure (and, in turn, a few detail shots of her stunning engagement ring) was all we wanted to stare at. Created by her go-to nail artist Michelle Humphrey, Dua's almond-shaped nails have a teensy bit of length, but still feel minimalist and soft, especially with the simple white French tips (a classic look that will never, ever go out of style). But she upped the ante with rhinestone flowers—like, these lil daisies are fully made of itsy rhinestones—in a mix of bright colors that feel peak summertime.
