Three killed as dilapidated hospital balcony collapses in Jamshedpur
The incident took place on Saturday around 4 p.m. The balcony, located on the third floor of the hospital, suddenly gave way, causing debris to fall onto patients resting in the corridor below. The collapse triggered panic, with people rushing to safety amid the chaos.
Five people were trapped under the rubble. Rescue efforts by police and fire personnel began around 4.30 p.m. and continued with the help of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) until 1 a.m. Two bodies were recovered by 9 p.m., while the third was pulled out around 1 a.m.
The deceased have been identified as 73-year-old David Johnson of Sakchi, 61-year-old Lucas Simon Tirkey, and 65-year-old Srichand Tanti of Saraikela.
The survivors -- Renuka Devi and Sunil Kumar -- were rescued, though Renuka Devi remains in critical condition.
The Jharkhand government has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for the injured. A three-member committee has been formed to probe the incident.
Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari visited the hospital at around 11.30 p.m. on Saturday and assured strict action against those found responsible.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also promised a long-term action plan to prevent similar accidents.
The incident has raised serious questions about the maintenance of hospital infrastructure. Locals and opposition leaders have accused the administration of negligence, alleging that warnings about the deteriorating condition of the building were ignored.
Former Chief Minister Raghubar Das said, 'Innocent lives have been lost due to government negligence. It's time for the administration to wake up and ensure that such tragedies are not repeated.'
Jharkhand BJP President Babulal Marandi has demanded a high-level inquiry and strict action against those responsible. He also offered prayers for the deceased and the injured.

Centre for exempting insurance premium from GST: Samrat Choudhary
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) The Centre has proposed exempting life and health insurance premium from GST, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and convenor of insurance GoM Samrat Choudhary said on Wednesday. Currently, health and life insurance premium attracts 18 per cent GST. The Group of Ministers (GoM) on life and health insurance will submit its report to the GST Council. The report will also include views and concerns expressed by some state finance ministers, he said. 'The Centre's proposal is clear that the insurance sector's individual and family (policies) should be exempt from GST. This has been discussed and the GoM report will be presented to the Council," Choudhary told reporters here after the meeting of the GoM. 'All members have given their approval for lowering rates. Some states have given their own views," he said, adding a final call on rates will be taken by the Council. Choudhary is the convenor of the 13-member state GoM on health and life insurance. The Centre's proposal on insurance is part of the overall next-Gen GST reform proposal under which goods and services tax will be levied at 2 rates– 5 and 18 per cent — based on categorisation of products as merit and standard. The 13-member GoM on health and life insurance was set up in September to suggest tax rates. The panel, which includes ministers from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Meghalaya, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, has been mandated to submit its report to the GST Council by October end. In 2023-24, the Centre and states collected Rs 8,262.94 crore through GST on health insurance premium, while Rs 1,484.36 crore was collected on account of GST on health reinsurance premium. Telangana HC Rejects Woman's Divorce, Rs 90 Lakh Alimony Plea; Says No Proof Of Husband's Impotency
The husband countered that the marriage was a love marriage, and that the couple had a sexual relationship both in India and the US. A woman's bid to end her marriage and secure Rs 90 lakh in permanent alimony collapsed in the Telangana High Court recently, with the court ruling that her allegations of her husband's impotency were not backed by evidence. The division bench of Justices Moushumi Bhattacharya and BR Madhusudhan Rao upheld a 2024 order of the Ranga Reddy family court, which had already refused to dissolve the marriage. The appeal had been filed by the wife, who insisted that her husband concealed his medical condition, failed to consummate the marriage, and subjected her to years of emotional distress. The couple married in December 2013 in Hyderabad. According to the wife, her husband was unable to have sexual relations from the very first night, a problem that persisted during their honeymoons in Kerala and Kashmir. When she joined him in the United States in 2015, she claimed doctors confirmed that his erectile dysfunction was untreatable. She told the court that his condition, coupled with recurring medical issues, left her traumatised and robbed her of the chance to start a family. The husband countered that the marriage was a love marriage, and that the couple had a sexual relationship both in India and the US. He admitted to experiencing difficulties but maintained that medication restored normalcy. He also pointed to financial support he extended to her, including over Rs 28 lakh transferred to her bank account, arguing that her case was driven by money rather than genuine grievance. The High Court examined a series of medical documents, including a potency test conducted at Gandhi Hospital, Secunderabad in 2021, which concluded there was 'nothing to suggest" that he was incapable of sexual intercourse. The bench noted that a diagnostic report before the marriage also showed normal sperm count. The judges were not persuaded by the wife's attempt to introduce fresh documents relating to financial cases in the United States, saying they were irrelevant to the matrimonial dispute and had been filed without due diligence. Another factor that weighed heavily against her was timing. The wife filed her petition for divorce in 2018, five years after the marriage. Court observed that if the marriage had truly never been consummated, she would have raised the issue much earlier with her family or authorities. Kidney racket: HC seeks report from state health officials
Madurai: Madras high court on Tuesday directed the principal secretary of the health and family welfare department and the director of medical and rural health services to file a report on the action taken in connection with the kidney trafficking racket in the state. The court also sought a report from the authorities on the mechanism required to prevent organ theft and organ trading in the state. A division bench of justice S M Subramaniam and justice G Arul Murugan sought the report while hearing a public interest litigation filed by S N Sathishwaran of Ramanathapuram district. The petitioner sought to transfer the investigation to CBI for conducting a fair, impartial, and independent investigation and to take appropriate action against all people involved, irrespective of their political affiliation. The petitioner stated that kidney ailments were on the rise in the last few decades. Due to the advancement in medical technology, kidney transplants substantially increased over the years, particularly in several hospitals across the state. However, a few people were involved in illegalities, including kidney theft and medical irregularities in the transplant of kidneys.. He stated that it came to light that Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital in Perambalur and Cethar Hospital in Trichy were found to have indulged in serious medical malpractice and kidney thefts. The petitioner alleged that both hospitals involved in the racket were connected to political personalities from DMK. The petitioner stated that the racket came to light when videos and testimonies surfaced online featuring workers from Pallipalayam and nearby areas in Namakkal, particularly from power loom and dyeing mill communities, claiming they were lured into selling kidneys for Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. Several victims claimed they received much less than promised, even though the recipient paid Rs 10 lakh to the broker. People belonging to the economically weaker sections were abused, and their kidneys were removed. The petitioner also sought an interim direction to the state to constitute an independent, impartial, and competent committee headed by an IAS officer and medical professionals to probe the alleged illegal organ trade and related irregularities, including identification of victims, perpetrators, and institutions involved, and submit a detailed report to the court.
