New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested a 27-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar for his involvement in multiple Remote Radio Unit (RRU) card thefts across Delhi and Punjab, officials said on Monday.
RRU cards are crucial in wireless communication systems, and their theft disrupts cellular services. The RRU transmits and receives signals, linking devices to a network.
Police said they got a tip-off about the identity and whereabouts of the suspect, wanted in multiple cases. A team was formed that tracked him down.
"The team found that the accused, identified as Shavej Ahmad alias Prince alias Prince Malik (27), was operating in Punjab and raided multiple locations in Punjab and UP and tracked the accused to Muzaffarnagar.
He was arrested on Delhi-Hardwar highway," DCP (crime) Vikram Singh said.
"During interrogation, it was revealed that Ahmad was involved in the delivery and supply of the stolen RRU cards to Delhi and Meerut. He allegedly used fake identity and frequently changed addresses and mobile numbers to evade arrest," DCP Singh added.
He told police that after working in a shoe shop and as a scrap dealer, he decided to make easy profit through the theft of mobile communication machinery.
The police found a stolen RRU, cash worth Rs 4 lakh, and a subcompact crossover SUV that was used in the thefts in Punjab. The accused was involved in cases across Delhi, Haryana and Punjab.
Police are investigating further to catch others involved in the racket. TNN

E-rickshaw driver slapped with Rs 22k challan for overloading
Noida: Noida traffic police imposed a Rs 22,500 fine on an e-rickshaw driver for overloading on FNG Expressway. A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed the vehicle near Parthala Chowk carrying furniture dangerously protruding from both sides and stacked on the roof. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The clip sparked online comments, with many users expressing concerns about traffic violations. Meanwhile, others empathised with the driver. "This man probably cannot afford to pay such a heavy fine. He should be warned and a nominal penalty should be imposed," wrote another user, Sanjay Kumar. After the video surfaced online, traffic police issued a challan of Rs 22,500 after scanning its registration number. The fine was imposed under sections 184 (dangerous driving) and 179(1) (disobedience of any direction given by authority) of the Motor Vehicle Act. GB Nagar has nearly 20,000 registered e-rickshaws that play a critical role in last-mile connectivity across the city in the absence of a city bus service. Data from the traffic police reveals that between Jan and May this year, over 24,000 challans were issued to e-rickshaws and nearly 2,100 were seized for various violations in the district. Vinay Tomar, a traffic sub-inspector, said this is the highest amount levied on an e-rickshaw driver for a traffic violation in Noida so far. "We usually do not impose such heavy penalties on e-rickshaw drivers, but in this case, the manner in which the vehicle was being driven created serious safety threats," Tomar said. On April 8 this year, a 40-year-old man and his minor son sustained injuries after their car crashed into a footpath near Botanical Garden metro station while trying to dodge an oncoming e-rickshaw driving on the wrong side. In another incident on May 15, 2024, two people died and three others were injured after a car collided with an overloaded e-rickshaw in Sector 33. All five passengers in the e-rickshaw suffered serious injuries in the crash.

Indore: Madhya Pradesh police on Monday detained another accused in the murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi in Gwalior, on the request of a Shillong police SIT that was camping in Indore investigating the murder that rocked the nation. Lokendra Tomar, owner of the apartment in Indore, where Raja's wife and main accused Sonam stayed in hiding, was detained from Gwalior's Gandhinagar area. Tomar reportedly rented the building to Shilom James, a contractor who was also arrested in connection with the destruction of crucial evidence. A team from Gwalior crime branch arrived at MK Plaza, Gandhinagar, caught Lokendra Tomar, and took him with them. Vivek Siyem, East Khasi Hills SP (Meghalaya), said, "A splinter team of Shillong police on Monday left from Indore to Gwalior to formally arrest the accused person, who will then be produced before a court in Gwalior for transit remand." He is the landlord of the flat at Dewas Naka, where Sonam had taken shelter while hiding in Indore, the SP said adding he had left Madhya Pradesh on June 16 for Uttarakhand. Shillong police, which already arrested James and the building guard Balveer Ahirwar, produced them before a court on Sunday, which sent them on a 7-day transit remand. During interrogation, James reportedly revealed that he leased the building from Tomar for Rs 3 lakh per month and housed various tenants there, including Sonam. After Sonam's arrest, Tomar allegedly pressured James to immediately remove and burn the bag from the flat. This bag is believed to have contained crucial evidence, including Raja and Sonam's mobile phones. On Sunday, a special investigation team (SIT) from Shillong police, accompanied by officials from Indore crime branch and an FSL team, took James to Hare Krishna Vihar Colony, where he reportedly burned the bag in a vacant plot. Police intend to send the seized charred remains of the bag for forensic analysis. This examination aims to identify what else was burned along with the bag and determine how long ago the destruction occurred. There is suspicion that SIM cards, electronic devices, and other items were also incinerated.
