(Reuters) - Sporting and Benfica lock horns in a Lisbon derby on Saturday that could decide the Portuguese league title with a game left in one of the closest races the country has seen in years.
The Portuguese capital rivals both have 78 points, with Sporting top by virtue of winning the first clash between the teams 1-0 at the Jose Alvalade stadium back in December.
If Sporting win on Saturday they will be champions, while if Benfica triumph by at least a two-goal margin they will reclaim the title with a superior head-to-head record.
A one-goal victory for Benfica would mean the title being decided next weekend when goal difference could come into play, with Sporting currently three goals better off than Benfica.
If the match is drawn, Sporting will retain the title by at least matching their rival's result on the final matchday.
With third-placed Porto long out of the title race, trailing 13 points behind the top two and level on 65 points with Braga, the Lisbon rivalry between Benfica and Sporting has dominated the campaign and not only in the league.
Benfica beat Sporting on penalties in the League Cup final in January and they will meet again at the iconic Jamor National Stadium in the Portuguese Cup final on May 25.
It will be a clash of two coaches who took charge of struggling sides in mid-season and got them back on track.
Rui Borges in late December replaced Joao Pereira, who lasted only 42 days after he was named Sporting manager following Ruben Amorim's move to Manchester United.
Amorin left Sporting in comfortable position at the top but a series of bad results forced the club to make a quick change and hire the 43-year-old Borges from Vitoria Guimaraes.
Sporting were already feeling the heat from Bruno Lage's Benfica, who was hired in September for a second tenure after Roger Schmidt was fired only four matchdays into the season.

Hector Hevel keeps Harimau Malaya in the hunt

KUALA LUMPUR: A Dutch-born player has been entrusted with running the Harimau Malaya engine room. And Hector Hevel has been doing a good job of it too. The heritage footballer played in two Asian Cup qualifiers and Malaysia scored six goals and conceded none. The 29-year-old midfielder, who scored in Malaysia's 2-0 win over Nepal in March, was also part of the team that thrashed Vietnam 4-0 yesterday. His contribution to the match was immense, serving as the vital link between the Harimau defence and attack. "We analysed their game and we were aware it wouldn't be easy to defeat them but we tried, and eventually, it paid off. They were indeed a good team, but we won. "Obviously when we start the game, we don't know how many goals we will score, but we knew we had quality in front, and we utilised it to the fullest," said Hevel, who will be leaving Portuguese club Portimonense SC to join Johor Darul Ta'zim. Though his side are perched on top of Group F and poised to qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, Hevel said their quest has only just begun. Hevel said the remaining four group matches will be challenging and they cannot afford to be complacent. "We made a good step (beating Vietnam) but it is not over yet. We have four more games to play, they are four important matches. So we need to step up and win them as well.

Arsenal to play all WSL home games at Emirates Stadium

ARSENAL will play all 11 of next season's Women's Super League home matches at Emirates Stadium, and the club will offer season tickets for the first time, they said on Tuesday. The newly crowned Champions League winners, who have recorded some of the largest crowds in women's football, made the Emirates their main stadium last season, averaging 34,110 fans in the nine WSL games they played there. 'For us, this is just the beginning, and bringing every WSL match to the Emirates is another step for more supporters to be part of this special journey,' Arsenal coach Renee Slegers said. Arsenal, who defeated Barcelona 1-0 last month to win their first Champions League title in 18 years, still plan to play at Meadow Park, Borehamwood -- which has a total capacity of 4,500 -- in the Women's Champions League league phase, as well as FA Cup and League Cup games. If they qualify for the Champions League knockout stages, those matches would take place at the 60,704-capacity Emirates. Arsenal recorded a 20% increase in ticket sales for the 2024-25 season over the previous year, selling more than 415,000 tickets. WORLD CUP SPIKE However, while Arsenal hosted Manchester United in front of a WSL record 60,160 fans at the Emirates in February 2024, WSL attendance peaked that season following the 2023 Women's World Cup, when England reaching the final for the first time. Average attendance dropped by 10% this past campaign, with five WSL teams -- Arsenal, Aston Villa, Everton, Manchester City and Manchester United -- experiencing declines, according to Opta Sports. Aston Villa and Manchester United's attendances fell by 33% each, even after the former moved all their home matches to Villa Park. Manchester United women averaged 4,562 fans at their home base in Leigh Sports Village, which is not easily accessible for fans compared with the men's team's home at Old Trafford, 15 miles away in central Manchester. Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City, Brighton & Hove Albion, West Ham United and Chelsea all had attendance increases in 2024-25, with Liverpool boasting the highest growth at 54%, boosted by the three games played at Anfield. It is hoped that next month's European Championship in Switzerland could lead to an increase in attendances next season, similar to the post-World Cup spike. The large crowds at Arsenal, however, do not reflect the popularity of women's soccer globally, FIFA reported in March. Teams FIFA categorised as Tier 1 in their annual report on the women's game averaged 1,713 fans, while teams categorised as Tier 2 and 3 averaged only 480 and 380 fans. Everton, who averaged 2,062 fans in 2024-25, are moving to Goodison Park next season, with the men shifting from their long-time home ground to the new Everton Stadium. The WSL game at Goodison against Merseyside rivals Liverpool in November drew a season-high 9,823 crowd, while their lowest attendance was 754 against Crystal Palace at 2,200-capacity Walton Hall Park.

Fan dies after falling from stands at Nations League final

MUNICH: A spectator was killed after falling from the stands at the Nations League final between Portugal and Spain in Munich on Sunday, UEFA confirmed to AFP subsidiary SID. The fan fell from the central tier during the first period of extra time into the press box in the lower tier. Paramedics and police rushed to the scene to assist the fan. A UEFA spokesperson said there had been a "medical emergency" and confirmed that a fan had "sadly" died during the match. Representatives from both sides expressed their sympathies after the match, won 5-3 by Portugal on penalties after the game finished 2-2. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente made a statement to express his condolences to the fan at the post-match press conference. "I want to show my deepest condolences because a fan has died. It reminds us, of what is important in life." A representative of the Portuguese team made a similar statement of condolences, saying the death "casts a shadow on our victory today." Portugal coach Roberto Martinez echoed the sentiments, saying it was "extremely sad news." The supporter is estimated to have fallen around eight metres.
