Pitt County Sheriff's Office celebrates school resource officers throughout February
PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — The Pitt County Sheriff's Office is using February to appreciate school resource officers, also known as SROs.
February 15th is SRO Appreciation Day, WNCT spoke with local law enforcement to learn more about their responsibilities.
'It's meant more. I've had more of an impact with the kids and that's where the stories feel. We get a chance that, like I said earlier, you interact with these kids every day and you get to do more for them than what I had, what I feel like I've done, like on the street,' Supervisor of Pitt County Sheriff's Office SRO Unit Sgt. Michael Stroud said. 'I go to answer calls, stuff like that. But, here I'm there every day with them. I see them every day, even if they do something wrong. They see me when they see me the next day.'
In Pitt County Public Schools, they are given one or two SROs depending on size of enrollment. Each one has pride in their position not only on a level of safety, but on a personal level to the students.

Duplin County grandmother wins $912K jackpot

According to a press release, Marcella Hooker of Warsaw, 'played for $5 and won the top level 'Alakazam' jackpot in The Lamp: Dark Arts, a digital instant game featuring a progressive jackpot that can be won at any time. The odds of that win are 1 in 12.9 million.' 'I actually have had trouble walking lately because of an injury, but after I saw that I took off running and screaming,' said Hooker. Hooker claimed her prize Monday, June 9th at lottery headquarters and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $654,596. 'Now we can pay off the house,' Hooker said. Fauquier County Public Schools giving out free summer meals to kids
FAUQUIER COUNTY, Va. () — Fauquier County Public Schools will be giving out free meals to children during the summer. The Summer Food Service Program is offering free to-go meal kits to children who are two to 18 years old. Meal distribution will be from Monday to Thursday, starting on June 10 until July 24. Meals will not be offered on June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. PHOTOS: Black bear travels to Herndon after traversing Maryland The kits will include breakfast and lunch for the day. On Thursdays, the kits will have meals for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Meals will be given out on a first-come-first-serve basis at these three locations: Salem Avenue (Townhomes), Marshall – 11 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Frost Street cul-de-sac (Marshall Townhomes), Marshall – 11:20 a.m. to 11:35 a.m. Marshall Community Center Library, Marshall – 11:40 a.m. to 11:55 a.m. Children are encouraged to attend in person to receive meal kits. Parents or guardians picking up meals without their children present need to show proof of eligibility. Acceptable documents for proof: A student ID A report card A health insurance card with the child's name and date of birth Any other document that reasonably identifies the child's name and age No invasive questions will be asked.
