Wright State basketball to play former conference rival this season
The Wright State men's basketball team will reunite with a former Horizon League rival this upcoming season. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The Raiders will play the Butler Bulldogs on Nov. 28 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the schools announced Wednesday. Advertisement This will be their first meeting since February 2012. TRENDING STORIES: Butler left the Horizon League after the 2011-12 season and played one season, 2012-13, in the Atlantic 10. The Bulldogs now play in the Big East. 'This game made a lot of sense for us,' Wright State head coach Clint Sargent said. 'They're a former Horizon League opponent, which adds familiarity and history to the matchup. It's a game our fans will appreciate – and with Butler's close proximity, it gives them a great opportunity to travel and support us in person.' November's game will be the 44th all-time meeting between the two schools. Alabama gets leading hitter from Horizon League school that discontinued baseball program Coach Rob Vaughn and Alabama baseball have picked up their first position player from the transfer portal since the Crimson Tide's season ended in the Hattiesburg Regional of the NCAA Tournament a week ago. Infielder Justin Osterhouse announced his commitment to Alabama in a post to social media on Saturday. Osterhouse, a sophomore last season, spent the past two years in the Horizon League with Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). The school announced it was discontinuing its baseball and softball programs on May 23. A left-handed hitter, Osterhouse led the Mastodons at the plate with a .328 average, 16 home runs and 46 RBIs this past season. He added 10 doubles and led the team in stolen bases (13) and on-base percentage (.453) while starting 52 of the team's 53 games. Listed as 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, the Grand Rapids, Mich. native started 30 games this past season at second game, 16 at third base, and six at shortstop. His best showing at the plate came on May 15 against Wright State in Fort Wayne. In a 21-17 Mastodons victory, Osterhouse hit four home runs in a 5-for-6, eight-RBI night. Alabama used senior Brennen Norton, Jon Young Jr. and Garrett Staton at second base this past season. The Crimson Tide went 41-18 overall, winning 40 regular-season games for the first time since 2002. They fell to Miami and Southern Miss on back-to-back days at the NCAA Tournament in Hattiesburg. Wright State stuns No. 1 Vanderbilt with historic upset in baseball regionals
The Commodores are now the first No. 1 seed to fail to reach its regional final since 1999. () Wright State pulled off a historic upset on Sunday afternoon in Nashville. Wright State stunned top-seeded Vanderbilt in its own regional in a 5-4 win on Sunday afternoon. That officially sent the No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament home before the regional final, which is something that hasn't happened under the current format — which was adopted in 1999. Advertisement The Commodores were the first No. 1 seed to be eliminated in the regionals round since UCLA fell in 2015. Vanderbilt has now been knocked out in the regional rounds for a fourth straight season. The Commodores started Austin Nye, though he faced just seven batters and gave up four runs before they pulled him. Vanderbilt started slowly crawling back into the game, and it put up three runs in the final inning in large part due to a two-run single from Mike Mancini. But RJ Austin flew out to end the game, which allowed Wright State to make it out with the one-run win. Despite the remarkable upset, Wright State — a No. 4 regional seed from the Horizon League — failed to take advantage. It had to turn around right away and take on Louisville on Sunday night, and the Cardinals rolled to a 6-0 win. The Cardinals are now advancing to the super regional. Wright State was playing in its third regional final, and its first since 2016. Advertisement Vanderbilt was the second top team to go down on Sunday. No. 2 Texas fell 7-4 to UTSA for a second straight day, which knocked the Longhorns out of the Austin regional early. That sent the Roadrunners to the super regionals for the first time in program history.
