Arizona vs Duke officials blasted for flagrant foul fiasco in Sweet 16: 'That's not right'
Some college basketball fans are crying foul over the officiating in Arizona's 100-93 loss to Duke in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night.
And one play in the March Madness game especially caught their ire.
Not long after Arizona's Jaden Bradley was called for a flagrant foul after bringing Duke's Kon Knueppel to the floor in the second half, Duke's Patrick Ngongba II brought down Arizona's Henri Veesaar in a similar manner.

However, the officials ruled Ngongba's play to be a common foul, not a flagrant foul, drawing criticism from the CBS Sports announcing team as well as social media.

CBS Sports announcers criticize officiating in Arizona vs Duke game:
Here's how the situation went down on CBS as the play was being reviewed:
"It will be interesting to see if the officials stay consistent with that call, because they already gave it to Arizona," analyst Jim Jackson said.

"Yeah, I don't see much difference in Bradley's versus this one," play-by-play announcer Brian Anderson replied.
"I think J.J. (Jim Jackson), you really nailed this … Ngongba takes him down," rules analyst Gene Steratore said.
Then after the officials announced it as a common foul, Steratore said: "I'm a little surprised by that fellas, I'm a little surprised by that. You know, it's one thing to be tied up like J.J. said earlier, but then you take him down to the ground. To me, now we're into those other descriptions of excessive and that's unnecessary to me. That's excessive to me. That rises to a flagrant foul."
Anderson then said: "I'm with you. That's a big break for Duke."

Social media slams officiating in Duke vs Arizona game:
It was a big break for Duke as the sequence took away some momentum from the Wildcats, who had cut the lead to eight. After the sequence, Duke's lead was back up to 11.
Arizona never got closer than five points the rest of the way.
Social media slammed the officiating for the call, with some alleging the fix was in to help Duke advance.

Social media slammed the officiating crew all game long for the manner in which it called the game.
Arizona was called for 24 personal fouls in the game, while Duke was called for 22.
The Wildcats went 21-for-23 from the free throw line, while the Blue Devils ended the game 23-for-27, getting a lot of free throws toward the end to help them secure the victory and advance to the Elite Eight on Saturday.

New York Giants are NFL's third-most valuable franchise

The New York Giants have a long and storied history that only a few NFL franchises can claim. The Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, and Green Bay Packers are the only three teams that have been active for longer than the Giants, but a team's longevity in the league doesn't have much bearing on what that organization is worth today. For example, the Dallas Cowboys joined the league in 1960, nearly 40 years after the Giants, yet they are the most valuable franchise in 2025. Sportico released its annual NFL valuations on Wednesday, and the Cowboys top the list. The Giants, though, finally broke the $10 billion mark and have become the third-most valuable team in the NFL. The Giants' valuation is up 34 percent from 2024. Below the team valuations listed on Sportico's site is an explanation of how they determined the values, what assets they counted, etc. Part of the explanation is as follows: 2025 Valuation: The sum of the enterprise value of an NFL franchise combined with the value of team-related businesses and real estate holdings. Team Value: NFL franchise valuation, derived from metrics by which football-team transactions occur, including aggregating local and national revenues and factoring in a team-specific multiplier. This represents the market value of the team itself, excluding related businesses held by its owners. It includes the value of each franchise's 3.13% interest in the league's properties, including NFL Films, NFL RedZone, 32 Equity (the private equity investment vehicle established by the NFL in 2013) and its digital platforms, which are acquired/dispossessed in tandem with the sale of a team. There is an additional category for Team-Related Businesses and Real Estate Holdings, which is broken down in a way that attempts to eliminate counting any money coming to the team that's not directly related to football operations. Of the top five teams with the highest valuation, only the Cowboys and Giants have missed the Super Bowl for the last 10 years, which proves that just because a franchise is worth more money, it doesn't mean they field a better football team. This year, the Giants have a chance to prove that they've located the train tracks and are getting back on board. Being one of the top-valued teams in the league, they need to start showing it on the field. They don't have to make the playoffs in 2025, although that is always the goal. If they can put together a winning season and pass the eye test, it will go a long way toward the team being worth what it's valued at. Suns add Steve Clifford to coaching staff as advisor

The Phoenix Suns are adding Steve Clifford to their coaching staff as an advisor, according to Michael Scotto. Clifford has an abundance of coaching experience as a head coach and an assistant. Steve has 23 seasons of NBA coaching experience, including head coaching stints with the Hornets and Magic. Phoenix recently announced its entire coaching staff, which is a fairly young one. It makes sense to add a seasoned veteran like Clifford to help out in the background. Phoenix's full staff: head coach Jordan Ott, and assistants Jesse Mermuys, DeMarre Carroll, Brian Randle, Chaisson Allen, John Little, Mike Muscala, and Sean Dwyer. The Suns also announced that Mateen Cleaves has joined its player development team as player development/leadership assistant. A find here: Ott and Clifford's paths crossed in Brooklyn. And he's reunited with former Hornets Mark Williams and Nick Richards on the up to date on every episode, subscribe to the pod on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, YouTube Podcasts, Amazon Music, Podbean, Castbox. Pelicans' Derik Queen chooses new jersey number to begin NBA career

New Orleans Pelicans rookie Derik Queen will have a new jersey number next season after previously wearing No. 25 for much of his basketball career. Queen donned that number last season as a freshman at the University of Maryland and during his tenure at the Montverde Academy in Central Florida. He even wore it while playing AAU basketball, leading Team Thrill to the Under Armour Association U-17 spring championship in 2023. With No. 25 currently occupied by Trey Murphy III, Queen opted to change to No. 22. It isn't exactly clear why Queen chose No. 22, but it was one of the closest open numbers to his longtime preference. Queen was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, averaging 16.5 points, nine rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks in 36 games on 52.6% shooting from the field. He helped lead the Terrapins to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2016. The 13th pick debuted with the Pelicans in the NBA Summer League, averaging 14 points, 11 rebounds, 2.3 assists and one block in three appearances. He registered a double-double in each appearance, including a 17-point, 10-rebound effort against Portland on July 15. The Pelicans announced on July 18 that Queen would miss at least 12 weeks after undergoing surgery to address a torn ligament in his left wrist sustained against the Trail Blazers. After an encouraging run over the summer, Queen and the team will be hopeful for a speedy recovery. Note: Throughout August, Rookie Wire is looking at every first-round pick and why each player selected their respective jersey number as they make the jump to the NBA.
