Electricity demand growth is resilient to tariffs, Engie CEO says
PARIS, April 24 (Reuters) - Developments in electrification and data centres for artificial intelligence should be 'particularly resilient' to the trade war started by the United States with the implementation of tariffs, French utility Engie's CEO Catherine MacGregor said on Thursday.
Uncertainty around tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump has hit stock markets hard over the last month, and the International Energy Agency has said that the trade wars could provide challenges for the emerging data-centre sector and cause slower growth.

"To meet our net zero objectives at the European level, even if you don't have much economic growth you are going to need to electrify and this ... drives electricity demand growth," MacGregor told Reuters at the company's annual general assembly.
Electrification refers to the process of developing batteries for electric vehicles and other processes necessary to meet climate goals.
"Then the other aspect is AI and data centres. As hyperscalers invest in training capability ... it's fairly immune to economic (impacts) because it is a bit like (research and development) investment," she said.
Engie is involved in various data centre development and cooling projects, and is also working on developing ways to cover a majority of data centre power needs from renewable or sustainable energy.

New details surrounding a White House brawl between Elon Musk and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have spilled out into the open - with one insider saying the Tesla CEO rammed his shoulder into Bessent's ribcage 'like a rugby player.' The Daily Mail was the first to report on the heated confrontation between Bessent and Musk, who's since been iced out of Donald Trump 's inner circle after their public blow-up this week. Former Chief Strategist Steve Bannon revealed that there was more to the mid-April tussle, insisting that both men ended up landing blows. They lost their patience with one another following a tense meeting in the Oval Office in which Trump snubbed Musk and instead took Bessent's advice on whom to name as acting IRS Commissioner, Bannon said. When Bessent and Musk exited the Oval Office, they began hurling insults at one another in the hallway. But it was Bessent who struck Musk where it hurts. According to Bannon, Bessent dared to say that the billionaire's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was a failure, since Musk didn't root out the $1 trillion in wasteful and fraudulent federal spending he promised he would. 'Scott said, "You're a fraud. You're a total fraud,"' Bannon said. That's when Musk body-checked Bessent, who hit the world's richest man right back, according to Bannon. Bessent's comment about Musk failing to deliver DOGE cuts at the magnitude he promised got the Tesla CEO to strike Bessent, who hit back, according to Steve Bannon Multiple people stepped in to break up the fight as the two men were getting close to the office of then-National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. 'I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,' Musk wrote. 'Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.' In response, Trump said he was 'very surprised' and 'very disappointed' about Musk's unabashed criticism. On Thursday, Trump threatened to cut off federal loans and subsidies to Musk's companies, which have received some $38 billion in government money over the last two decades. Trump doubled down on this idea Friday, telling reporters aboard Air Force One: ''I would certainly think about it, but it has to be fair.' He also told reporters that he wished the billionaire 'well,' to which Musk replied in a post on X saying: 'Likewise.' Musk then responded to the clip of Trump talking about canceling his grants, saying: 'Fair enough.' Musk has sought to soften his tone, recently deleting his post on X saying that Trump was in the Epstein files. On Saturday, Trump did a phone interview with NBC's Kristen Welker and said he had no desire to mend his relationship with Musk. He also said he didn't plan to speak with Musk anytime soon. 'I'm too busy doing other things,' Trump said. 'I have no intention of speaking to him.'

Chelsea reach agreement with Dortmund star and seek to seal £50m transfer

Chelsea have also signed Liam Delap and Dário Essugo from Ipswich and Sporting Lisbon respectively over the past week. And those signings could potentially be joined by English wideman Gittens. As first reported by French outlet RMC Sport, the West London side have agreed on a seven-year deal with the 20-year-old to move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have tabled a £29.5m bid - although it's believed they'll need to go higher - and hope to get a deal secured before the first part of the summer transfer window closes on Tuesday. Gittens, an England under-21 international, was actually at Chelsea as a youngster as well as a host of other clubs. He eventually found his way to Manchester City but quit the club in 2020 as he became the latest in a long line of promising English talents to move to the Bundesliga. He has since gone on to make over 100 appearances for Dortmund, scoring 17 goals - 12 of which came last season. Despite still having three years left to run on his deal, it appears he will now depart Dortmund if the two clubs can agree a fee. Gittens has a £50m release clause in his contract, but Chelsea are hoping to get it done for slightly less. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl admitted earlier this year that there was potentially interest in Gittens. He said: 'There's definitely a market for him. He's a very exciting player. We'll be having discussions soon. If offers come in, we'll have to deal with them.' 'We want to reduce wages,' Kehl added. 'That said, it's possible we'll continue with some of these players. But some may no longer be part of the BVB squad next season.' Gittens will arrive at Stamford Bridge as a possible replacement for Jadon Sancho, who has departed the club after Chelsea chiefs decided not to sign him permanently following his loan. The West Londoners have decided not to activate a £25m clause in the deal, and have consequently paid a £5m penalty. In a statement on social media, the winger said: "Grateful for the experience. Big love to everyone at Chelsea who made me feel at home — teammates, staff and the fans. Wishing the club all the best moving forward. Truly grateful, Thank you Blues." Sancho made 45 appearances across his season with Chelsea, scoring five goals and notching ten assists as Enzo Maresca's side won the Conference League.
