Birmingham campaigners welcome decision on Black Sabbath pub site
The proposals sparked fresh anger earlier this year, with Darren John, from the Save Station Campaign, arguing in his objection that they would mean "Toyoko will just twiddle their thumbs for another three years, neglecting The Crown and Station Street despite their promises".A campaign to save Station Street launched after the sudden closure of the Electric Cinema last year, and argued the road and its venues are steeped in cultural importance.Calls to reopen The Crown in particular to celebrate Black Sabbath's legacy have intensified after the band's momentous farewell show and Ozzy Osbourne's death just days later.
Birmingham City Council found Toyoko Inn's plans would be contrary to current policy, saying applications or time extensions for temporary car parks would not be supported "unless exceptional circumstances can be demonstrated".A council report said: "Moreover, a key focus for the city centre is to reduce the need for private car journeys."The applicant has not sufficiently justified the necessity of extending the use of this car park, thus the proposal contradicts the council's public transportation goals."Campaigners have celebrated the council's refusal of the plans."Time for Toyoko Inns to put forward proper refurbishment plans for The Crown as a pub and music venue right now or sell up," the Save Station Street campaign said."For what it's worth – we don't ultimately care who owns the site... if it is run with integrity, for Brummies and with respect to its legacy as one of the UK's most progressive and historic venues."Jez Collins, of the Birmingham Music Archive, added: "It's heartening to read the planning application for the continued use of the car park behind the historic Grade II listed The Crown was rejected."
Toyoko Inn has previously said it has plans to not only restore The Crown but also build a new hotel with about 300 beds on the existing car park at the rear of the site."The pub is a historically important site and its new vision will reflect and celebrate this heritage," a cover letter within the recent proposals said.It argued the proposed scheme would also make an "important contribution" towards the regeneration of Southside District, with the economic impact predicted upwards of £4m.

He had previously admitted he has found the death of his mentor "overwhelming" after previously declaring the star as "the greatest of all time" in a touching tribute. The chart topping singer candidly explained that the sudden death of his friend has been hard to process. He told The Times:"I told a friend that I thought Ozzy had another five albums in him. And then he did the show and then he died. It's so overwhelming." "I just love him and right till the very end he supported me. I get emotional, because I've loved him since I was about two." And he added: "He taught me self-belief and so I'm going to take his spirit and make sure everybody knows for the rest of my life who Ozzy Osbourne was - he meant everything to me." The report also explained that the singer learned of Ozzy's death while he was on a remote island without internet access where he had been recording new music. Yungblud took to Instagram to shares candid photos of himself chatting to and smiling alongside wheelchair bound Ozzy in a touching tribute online following his death. He wrote alongside the snaps: "I didn't think you would leave so soon the last time we met you were so full of life and your laugh filled up the room. But as it is written with legends, they seem to know the things that we don't. "I will never forget you - you will be in every single note I sing and with me every single time I walk on stage. Your cross around my neck is the most precious thing I own. You asked me once if there was anything you could do for me and as I said then and as I will say now for all of us the music was enough. "You took us on your adventure - an adventure that started it all. I am truly heartbroken. You were the greatest of all time." On Tuesday evening Yungblud was also joined by his mum on the red carpet for his upcoming documentary film. Clara Amfo has revealed that depression led to her quitting her BBC Radio 1 show after eight years on air. The presenter, 41, revealed that she struggled with her mental health after becoming 'burnt out' due to the toll of her career. Clara, who spent a decade as a DJ and regularly fronts shows including the BBC's Glastonbury coverage, admitted she was in a 'negative headspace' at the time and needed a 'little reset'. Speaking to Fearne Cotton on the Happy Place podcast, she said: 'I was burnt out, I wasn't taking care of myself properly and I think I was a bit overwhelmed by life's injustices. 'I just wasn't feeling great and I was in a bit of a negative headspace. 'The start of 2023, I was in the flipping trenches. I was feeling really, really depressed sort of mid-2023 and I took some time off radio, and just had to have a little reset. That is when I decided I was going to leave my show.' Clara, first joined Radio 1 as a DJ and later hosted the Live Lounge, The Official Chart on Radio 1, and her 1Xtra programme. Clara also addressed the pressures of working in high-profile broadcasting as she said she never wanted to 'resent' the job. She added: 'I had mixed reactions. Obviously our bosses, who are lovely, were like 'But why?' 'I'm one of these people where I am so passionate about what I do that I never want to resent anything, I don't want anything to feel like it's forced or a chore. 'And I want to be able to listen to music always as a fan, rather than as a business, and I want to be able to talk to people on a human level without thinking, 'Got to get that viral interview clip'.' Clara left Radio 1 in 2023, marking the end of a decade-long chapter that included championing new artists through her 'hottest record' feature. At the time, she said: 'I'm so proud of the work I've been able to do on every show, whether it's been from the 8th floor, a city in the UK or a pop star's house across the pond. I'm grateful to have had the ears of the listeners who have consistently shown up for me. 'I'm enamoured by everyone I've had the privilege of working alongside for each and every broadcast. It comes after Clara revealed that she 'debated having liposuction ' after 'getting in her own head' about her body image. The presenter candidly discussed her relationship with her body image as she covered the December edition of UK Women's Health last year. 'I'll be so real with you, I was debating having lipo. I won't lie, towards the end of last year – because I got in my head, I had the consultation and everything.' Explained what stopped her, she added: 'I obsessively research things, and I was just looking at all the times when it had gone wrong for people. I think I scared myself out of it, to be honest.' The swipes come as the mother and daughter duo are currently battling through a tricky patch in their relationship, as exclusively revealed by The Sun. Just five minutes into the fourth episode of The Princess Diaries, Princess said she would never do glamour modelling like her mum did. On set for a photoshoot to commemorate her 18th birthday, Princess donned an array of stunning outfits. One of the outfits was a very sheer robe, which left her dad Peter red-faced when she face-timed him. After posing up a storm in the sheer robe, Princess reflected on her mum's modelling career. Saying how she felt in her zone while posing up a storm, Princess confessed: "I felt like my mum." She explained how she had previously seen snaps of her mum modelling when she was younger, and how her shoot reminded her of that. Taking a subtle swipe, Princess then said: "But obviously she did topless. And I would not do topless." Princess Andre admits she's 'not over her ex' as she opens up on split after she goes on a date with new boy Then, later on in the episode, Princess seemingly took a second swipe at her mum when she gushed over how she goes to her stepmum Emily for advice. It was reported, at the time of filming, that Princess did not invite her mum to her birthday party. Princess slammed the claims and urged that she had never spoken badly of her mum. She added how she would never want her mum and dad in the same room as it would be "awkward". Princess noted how if she had a party where her mum was present, she would not want her dad there, and if she had a party where her dad was present, she would not want her mum there. This comes as Princess and her mum Katie navigate a rift. Katie previously vented about those working with her daughter after The Sun revealed her secret heartache about being cut out of her TV show. She even vowed not to watch her daughter's reality show, after feeling left out of such an important thing in Princess' life. Then, earlier this week, Katie shared a cryptic message saying 'your mum is not your enemy'. Sharing a quote on her Instagram stories, Katie urged that as a mum she is "not trying to control" but instead "trying to protect" The quote also acknowledged how she "may not be perfect" but is "the only woman in this world" who wants the best for her children. The post Katie shared began with: "Your mum is not your enemy." It went on: "She may not always say things the way you want to hear them, but her heart is always in the right place. "She's the one who worries when you're hurting, prays when you're lost, and stands by you even when the world doesn't. "She's not trying to control you. She's trying to protect you." The cryptic quote concluded: "She may not be perfect, but she's the only woman in this world who truly wants what's best for you, even if it costs her everything." 7
