'Doctor Who' on Disney+: Ncuti Gatwa, Varada Sethu on navigating opinions from vocal fans, critics
Doctor Who fans, and critics, have been particularly vocal as the show returns for Season 2 on Disney+, but Ncuti Gatwa continues to be one of the most charismatic Doctors in the show's history. Now paired with a new companion, Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu, Gatwa has navigated the Doctor Who opinions with like the consummate professional he is.
"The show is beloved for a reason, it's been inspiring people, entertaining people for years, and it's glorious. The fandom is incredible and keeps the show running," Gatwa told Yahoo Canada. "I saw how far and wide it reached, and I tried to concentrate on that."
"At the end of the day, I'm just an actor. I've just got a job to do and I have to just respond to the script, and what I'm being asked to do. And other opinions are lovely, but they are not paying my bills. I need to concentrate on the task at hand, which is the script. And so that's always my main focus. ... [But] I love being a part of the universe, [the] family. ... It will always be the case with something as iconic and as huge as Doctor Who that there's going to be 1,000,001 chefs in the kitchen. That's the nature of the beast."
"The world is such a diverse place and it's going to have so many diverse opinions," Sethu added. "You're going get another [Doctor] at some point that will be right for you."
Moving away from any hostility about the show Doctor Who Season 2, we're strong believers that this season is off to an exciting start.
It begins with Belinda and her boyfriend Alan (Jonny Green), who isn't really the best choice of partner. He says things like, "I know that girls aren't good at maths." We'll pass on the misogyny, thanks. But Alan says he wants to "capture" the night sky and has a star named after Belinda.
Seventeen years later, no longer dating Alan, Belinda works as a nurse and that star becomes particularly important, as she learns from The Doctor.
One of the most attractive things about this Doctor and companion pairing is that she challenges The Doctor in a way we haven't seen to this extent before. She's not particularly excited about travelling through time with this person she just met. Belinda just wants to live her existing life.
She also doesn't shy away from a sarcastic remark like saying, 'There's always a doctor standing back while all the nurses do the hard work."
"She wasn't just charmed," Sethu said about her character. "I think it speaks so much to her sense of self and her own life and how she sees her own purpose."
"She's not going to go along with somebody else because he's turned up and said, 'Oh this is adventurous. This is fun.' She's saying, 'No. I know where my place is in world and that's where I want to stay. That's where I want to go.' ... I think it also means that she makes a mirror to The Doctor, because she's able to hold him accountable and reflect back. This is who you are. ... These are the consequences of your actions."
For Gatwa, moving into Season 2 was about evolving and expanding from all the "enthusiasm" and "excitement" The Doctor had in the previous season.
"He, I think already, before we meet Belinda, certainly in the Christmas episode, there's an introspection that's happening," Gatwa said. "And he's really joined The Doctor club in terms of embracing his loneliness and the fact that he craves connection."
"So this season there's a grounded-ness to him. ... It felt really nice to come back this season ... feeling more comfortable in my body, having played him for a season. ... And then he meets a very fiery nurse who also he challenges him and enables him to grow, ... and they grow together and become such a beautiful partnership."
And that's a core element of the excitement around Gatwa at The Doctor. The character can be full of energy and magnetism, but can also show moments of vulnerability, making Gatwa a particularly endearing Doctor. Gatwa should certainly be seen as a great asset in the evolution of Doctor Who.

Read More: 'Predator: Killer of Killers' Is Now Available to Watch - Here's How to Stream No details yet have been released about Goth's role in the film, though presumably it's the same part that Oscar winner Mikey Madison reportedly turned down in April. Mia Goth attends the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Radhika Jones at Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on March 02, 2025 in Beverly Hills, California. Dia Dipasupil/FilmMagic Very little overall is known about "Star Wars: Starfighter". Shawn Levy of "Deadpool & Wolverine" fame is directing from a script by Jonathan Tropper, who previously worked with Levy on "The Adam Project" and "This Is Where I Leave You". "Starfighter" is set roughly five years after the events of "Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker" and is a standalone film disconnected from the larger Skywalker Saga. "Star Wars: Starfighter" is scheduled to hit theaters May 28, 2027. Originally, this would've placed its bowing pretty close to another big Disney film, "Avengers: Secret Wars", but the latter event film has since been delayed to December 17, 2027. "Starfighter" is part of Disney's attempt to once more capitalize on "Star Wars" at the box office. The franchise hasn't released a feature since 2019 and numerous projects have been reported to have stalled along the way. Next for Star Wars in theaters is "The Mandalorian & Grogu", which is set for release May 22, 2026. The film will continue the adventures of the heroes introduced in Disney+'s "The Mandalorian". Among other projects is Daisy Ridley's return as Rey in a film set 15 years after "The Rise of Skywalker", and James Mangold's ambitious "Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi". Goth won't be sitting on her hands waiting for "Star Wars" to come around, of course. Fans can next see her this November in Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein". Goth plays Elizabeth in the Netflix original, the fiancée of Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac). Goth is also starring in Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" in an as-of-yet undisclosed role. She is rumored to be playing the powerful witch Circe, but this has not been confirmed. The Disneyland Resort Is Trading ‘Monsters Inc.' for ‘Avatar'
The Disneyland Resort is officially trading one Sully for another. At the D23 Expo last year, Disney announced James Cameron's world of Avatar would be coming to its California Adventure theme park in Anaheim, as well as a new ride based on Pixar's Coco. What the company didn't announce at the time was where the heck those things would fit into the already crowded area. Well, Thursday night, Disney announced those locations and revealed that the addition of Na'vi leader Jake Sully meant everyone's favorite blue monster, Sulley, would be saying goodbye Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!, a family-friendly ride which opened at Disney California Adventure in 2005, is officially closing in early 2026 to make way for this new Avatar 'experience.' Avatar will also take over the majority of that area of the park, the Hollywood Backlot, meaning a signature California area will be leaving California Adventure. As for Coco, that ride will be going on the other side of the park near Paradise Gardens Park and Pixar Pier. Which is fitting, as that's where many other Pixar-themed rides reside. Nothing will be leaving for that, though, as it'll largely take over 'backstage' areas. Construction on Coco will begin this fall. Avatar is 'still in the early stages of development,' so we still don't know what, specifically, it's even going to be or when it's going to start construction. Just that to do so, Monsters Inc. will permanently close in 2026. Of course, with Monsters Inc. leaving the West Coast, we should mention it's being reborn on the East Coast. Don't forget that back at the D23 Expo, it was also announced a full Monsters Inc. land was coming to Disney Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, highlighted by a wild-looking roller coaster. So, the hit Pixar franchise isn't being totally shafted, just shifted. Finally, in a piece of news that is basically just for people who live on the West Coast, with Disneyland doing all of this construction, it will also be adding a new transportation hub and parking lot. Which, we know, doesn't sound all that exciting. But if you've ever driven to Disneyland and been stuck in traffic at one of its two giant parking lots, anything to alleviate that pressure is a big deal. It'll be on the east side of the park, behind Tomorrowland, and will offer all manner of improved transportation solutions. You can read more about that, Coco, and Avatar at the official Disney Parks blog. Anyone out there super bummed to see Monsters Inc. go?

Theresa Nist fires back at ‘Golden Bachelor' Gerry Turner's claim they divorced over his cancer
Theresa Nist and Gerry Turner's journey came to an end — but not because of his health battle. The reality star who found love with Turner on Season 1 of 'The Golden Bachelor' revealed that the pair 'absolutely' didn't split over his cancer diagnosis. 'It was a zero factor, zero. Absolutely. I was just so surprised that he even said that,' Nist said on Thursday's episode of 'The Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous Podcast.' 'I knew about the cancer a long time ago. And the way Gary presented it to me was that, 'The doctor said that I'm going to die of old age before this cancer gets to me.'' Advertisement 5 Theresa Nist speaks about about her marriage to Gerry Turner ending. almost_famouspodcast/Instagram 'He bluffed it off, like it really wasn't that important,' she continued. 'And he had no symptoms, and he still doesn't. So we never had a conversation that said, 'Oh my gosh, you're sick. I can't stay with you now. I have to leave.' That never happened.' Turner and Nist first got engaged at the end of 2023 on the show before saying 'I do' on a TV special in January 2024. But by April of that year, the exes announced in an interview with 'Good Morning America' that they were divorcing. Advertisement 5 Theresa Nist and Gerry Turner. Disney via Getty Images In December 2024, Turner revealed he had been diagnosed with a blood cell cancer, Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, claiming it played into their split. The reality star also noted that he and Nist each wanted to live close to their families in different states. 'When you are hit with that kind of news and the shock wears off after a few days or a few weeks and you regroup and you realize what's important to you, that's where you start to move forward,' Turner told People. 'And I hope that people understand in retrospect now that that had a huge bearing on my decisions and I think probably Theresa's as well.' 'And right before my interview, they contacted me, and they said, 'Hey, we want to talk to you right now, because Gerry just came out and said that his illness was the reason you broke up.' And I go, 'What?' I said, 'No, it wasn't that.' There was zero conversation about that being in it.' Although, at the time, the New Jersey resident felt maybe Turner believed what he was saying. 'If that was the reason, it was in his mind only, never discussed as a reason. He said it was a factor that weighed heavily into my decision. And I would imagine Theresa's, too,' Nist confessed. 'He just imagined. But it had nothing to do with it. Nothing. I would have never left my husband over in illness. I stayed with my husband, Billy. I mean, for years he was sick, and he passed away at home. He was in hospice. I mean, it was really pretty bad. But I would never leave … That's just not me. That wouldn't happen.' Advertisement 5 Gerry Turner with his new partner. goldengerryturner/Instagram Turner, meanwhile, revealed in April, per TMZ, that he's dating a retired school teacher named Lana, who also lives in Indiana. 'I really am happy for him,' Nist, who's also dating, stated. 'And if he had to find his person by going this circuitous route, then he did, then it was successful. He found someone that really suits him, and that's wonderful. So I think it worked out the way it was supposed to work out.' In September, the finance whiz made it clear she had no hard feelings toward Turner. 'So Gerry and I have spoken,' Nist exclusively told The Post in September 2024. 'We don't speak regularly. I would say I wish him all the best, and I can see that he has so many friends, and I'm so happy for him that he does.' 5 Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist on their wedding day. Disney 'I truly hope he finds his person,' she added, 'because he wants that, and he deserves that, and I'm rooting for him. I'm in his corner.' At the time, Nist shared what she was looking for in her perfect suitor. Advertisement 'Sense of humor,' she detailed. 'Let's laugh together. Smart. Somebody smart. And then I have to be physically attracted to the person, so there has to be chemistry. And that's something that you can not define, it's undefinable. You just either are attracted to someone, or you're not.' Nist noted, 'It's just the ability to have fun together and to support each other, make each other laugh, and have each other's backs.'
