Milwaukee County trades fireworks for drones for its July 3 celebration
Milwaukee, get ready to celebrate Independence Day with a slight tech-savvy twist this year.
Milwaukee County, in collaboration with the Milwaukee Parks Foundation, plans to use drones instead of fireworks for its long-standing McKinley Beach July 3 celebration. The drone show will blend "cutting-edge drone technology with an original synchronized soundtrack for a dazzling 45-minute performance," featuring images of Milwaukee's iconic landmarks as well as patriotic and local themes, according to the county.
'Milwaukee County is at its best when we come together to create memorable, inclusive experiences for everyone," Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley said in a news release. "We're proud to bring the community together for this first-of-its-kind drone show, highlighting not just our beautiful lakefront but the creativity and collaboration that make Milwaukee County so special."
The switch marks a national shift in other cities across the country, including Napa, Tahoe City, and Salt Lake City, that have chosen drone shows over fireworks for July 4 celebrations. For many cities, the use of drones offers a safer, eco-friendly and noise-free spectacle. The City of Wauwatosa has also decided to ditch traditional fireworks, replacing them with a drone show July 2.
'This drone show is an exciting and environmentally conscious way to celebrate our community," Guy Smith, executive director of Milwaukee County Parks, said in the release. "Unlike traditional fireworks, drone shows reduce noise and air pollution while still delivering an unforgettable experience ... It's about making memories and ensuring everyone feels welcome in these shared spaces.'
The display is expected to start around 9:15 p.m., with public viewing areas available at McKinley Beach and McKinley Park.
In 2024, Milwaukee County canceled its annual July 3 lakefront fireworks show due to a lack of sponsorship funding. The county's parks department previously shared that the fireworks display usually cost roughly $350,000 for pyrotechnics and $20,000 for additional staffing and service costs related to the event. The event typically draws in over 100,000 people from across Wisconsin.

Organizers for Salvadoreñisimo Festival told WTOP the annual event, which was set to take place at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg, has been canceled for this year. It normally takes place in September around the time of Independence Day in El Salvador, Sept. 15, and Hispanic Heritage Month. Organizers told WTOP they did not want to put those in the audience in danger of possible raids from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. The event welcomes thousands of people for musical performances, comedic skits and food. The festival was set to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. The D.C. region is home to one of the largest Salvadoran populations in the country. The U.S. Census reports Salvadorans represents more than a quarter of the Latino population in Maryland and D.C. Local outlet Telemundo 44 was the first to report the event's cancellation. Concerts and events around the country have been affected because of immigration policies being pushed by the Trump administration. The City of Lynn Haven announces its annual 4th of July Celebration
LYNN HAVEN, Fla. (WMBB) – The City of Lynn Haven has announced one of the largest Independence Day events in Bay County, the annual Fourth of July Celebration. According to a news release, the celebration will start with the America: Stars & Stripes Parade Opening Ceremony at 8 a.m. on Friday, July 4, at the junction of 9th Street and Highway 77. 'I'm thrilled about this year's celebration—it will be one to remember. Our Fourth of July Celebration is one of Bay County's largest, and we invite everyone to Lynn Haven to celebrate our nation's Independence Day. We encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the entire day,' City Manager of Lynn Haven Vickie Gainer said. Those who want a prime viewing spot along 5th Street for the 9 a.m. parade are encouraged to arrive early, as over 60 decorated floats will travel their way down Hwy 77, culminating at 11th Street. Also kicking off at 9 a.m., Sharon Sheffield Park will be transformed into a festive hub. It will include activities for all ages that include carnival rides, axe throwing, a mechanical bull, stilt walkers, balloon artists, face painting, vendor booths, food trucks and a wide variety of games and entertainment. The celebration will continue into the evening with the Let Freedom Ring Finale at A.L. Kinsaul Park. The Gr8ful Dads will perform at 6 p.m., followed by a headline performance by Jamie O'Neal, the award-winning Australian-American country music star, at 7 p.m. The evening celebration will also involve food trucks, vendor booths, yard games, glitter tattoo artists and free photos from the Gypsy Belle Photo Bus.
