PEC's ex-students roll back the years at reunion

The Hindu21 hours ago
A recent reunion of the 1996-2000 B. Tech batch of the erstwhile Pondicherry Engineering College (PEC), now the Puducherry Technological University (PTU), to mark the silver jubilee of their graduation, was virtually a transatlantic event, with former students from far-flung destinations across the globe gathering at the alma mater.
Some of the former students had arrived from the bustling metropolises of the U.S, others headed down from Australia, European cities, West Asia and South East Asian cities.
'The reunion both rekindled and reinforced bonds and a collective spirit fostered in the campus', said Saravanan S, who was among the core group behind the 'I'mPECcable Y2K' reunion.
It took well over a year of planning and virtual conferencing to pull off the event, which was special as it marked the 25th anniversary of passing out for the Class of 2000. And, about 130 students made it to the silver jubilee bash.
Students of the batch take pride in its diversity. It is hardly about the global spread of the alumni network, but about the heterogeneous mix that includes a fair share of high-flyers, from entrepreneurs to CEOs, a top-ranking law enforcement officer, a Buddhist monk, a Catholic Nun, and talented homemakers.
Students attribute the diverse paths taken by batchmates in finding fulfilment to the academic atmosphere in the institution that moulded them to be free-thinkers.
Back at their academic home, the collective decided that the best way of giving back to the alma mater was to spearhead a slew of alumni-driven initiatives that would benefit the next generation of engineers and sustain institutional excellence.
The centrepiece of the goodwill gesture of giving back to the alma mater is a proposal to establish a Centre of Excellence
Ambitious in its scope, the project aims to create a state-of-the-art facility, fostering advanced research, innovation, and skill development, thereby significantly enhancing the university's academic and technological capabilities. The other proposals range from campus beautification, upgrade to the college's facilities and setting up a RO water cooler.
Adding to these immediate improvements, the alumni has also planned for continued collaboration with PTU, a long-term engagement to train faculty members and students on the latest engineering skills that would ensure that the university's curriculum remained at the forefront of technological advancements.
The batch has also committed to assisting current students in securing placements in top-notch companies, leveraging their extensive professional networks to open doors to promising career opportunities. S. Mohan, PTU Vice-Chancellor who was the chief guest for the launch of silver jubilee reunion addressed the alumni virtually.

Boult becomes GoBoult, aiming for ₹1K cr sales and international expansion

Smart wearables and hearables manufacturing company Boult is undertaking a brand image change and will adopt the name GoBoult to capture the more premium segment of users, the company's co-founder and chief executive officer, Varun Gupta, said. The rebranding comes at a time when production at most hearable and wearable manufacturing units in India, including Boult's, has been halted or slowed down due to a shortage of rare-earth magnets and other crucial elements that are imported almost exclusively from China. Gupta, however, said that the production stoppage was also necessary since the company wanted to liquidate all the old stock before rolling out the rebranded products. 'Thankfully, it was not so much of a problem for us because, anyway, we were going through a transition. We had to maintain low stock for the last 45 days and the next 30 days as well. We did not want to be producing a huge amount of stock under the old name Boult,' Gupta said. The company may, however, face hiccups even after the rebranding exercise is complete, as the rare-earth magnet supplies from China continue to be constrained, he said. 'The supplies have been constrained. We are looking at alternate suppliers in China; sometimes we are looking at importing, while at other times, it takes a premium to get the same material. As much as we would like to avoid it, we also face issues and capacity constraints,' Gupta said. The company aims to hit the market with the rebranded products starting in September, Gupta added. 'We are looking at a Rs 1000 crore+ number this year. We want to do a few strategic things, such as going international and going for an IPO (initial public offering) as we hit Rs 1000 crore,' he said. The company, which was founded in 2017, will target the Rs 2000 and above average selling price segment for both wearables and hearables, Gupta said. He added that the audio segment contributes to about 75% of the company's total revenues, while smartwatches and other wearables contribute to the other 25%. The digital-first company, which sells nearly 93% of its products through online channels and e-commerce websites, is also planning to expand its retail and offline-store presence, aiming to reach more than 30,000 stores within the next 18 months, he said. GoBoult, the rebranded company, plans to foray into the US, European, Southeast Asian, and East Asian markets within the next five years, Gupta said.

BP makes largest oil & gas discovery in 25 years offshore Brazil, shares surge

British energy major BP said on Monday it has made its largest oil and gas discovery in 25 years offshore Brazil. The discovery is a big boost for the company following its strategic shift away from renewable energy to refocus on fossil fuels. After the announcement, BP shares gained 1.3% by 1107 GMT, outperforming a broader index of European energy companies which was up 0.1%. BP said it planned to create a major new output hub at the Bumerangue discovery in Brazil, which was probably the company's biggest since Shah Deniz in 1999, a gas and condensate field in the Azeri part of the Caspian Sea. According to the company, Shah Deniz - with around 1 trillion cubic metres of gas and 2 billion barrels of condensate initially in place, produced 28 billion standard cubic metres of gas last year. "Brazil is an important country for BP, and our ambition is to explore the potential of establishing a material and advantaged production hub in the country," said Gordon Birrell, BP's production and operations chief, according to Reuters. BP had secured the Bumerangue block in the Santos basin amid pre-salt rocks in deep water offshore Brazil in December 2022 with what it said were "very good commercial terms". The company further said this was its tenth discovery this year, following findings in Trinidad, Egypt, Brazil and others. It had forecast its oil and gas production at 2.3 million to 2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2030. In 2024, the production was 2.4 million barrels of oil equivalent. It expects production to be lower in 2025. Early results indicate elevated levels of carbon dioxide in the Brazilian block, BP said, adding that further analysis would give more insight into its potential amid a bigger drilling programme in Brazil. The company is set to report its second quarter results on Tuesday.

Lyft, China's Baidu to launch robotaxi service in Europe next year

U.S. ride-hailing company Lyft said on Monday it will partner with China's Baidu to deploy robotaxis across Europe starting next year, marking the Chinese search engine giant's first foray into the European self-driven taxi sector. The partnership will launch initially in Germany and the United Kingdom, with Baidu's electric RT6 robotaxis operating on Lyft's platform pending regulatory approval. The rollout aims to scale to thousands of vehicles across Europe in the coming years, leveraging Lyft's $200 million acquisition of European mobility app FreeNow, completed on Thursday. The deal gives Lyft access to operations in nine countries and over 180 cities, marking its first expansion outside North America. Under the partnership, Lyft will operate the platform, managing customer services and fleet logistics, while Baidu will supply autonomous vehicles and technical expertise. "What we're excited about with FreeNow is they have a deep, long-lasting relationship with regulators, and we want to go and have those conversations about how we do this," Lyft Executive Vice President of Driver Experience Jeremy Bird told Reuters. The UK government has fast-tracked its robotaxi timeline and is aiming for initial services with paying passengers by spring 2026. Companies such as Uber and Wayve are also preparing for deployment once regulatory clearance is granted. The deal comes as rival Uber has expanded its global robotaxi efforts, working with Waymo, WeRide, and Momenta, with a European launch also set for 2026. Uber's global robotaxi presence intensifies pressure on Lyft to expand beyond its North American home market and build its autonomous capabilities. Baidu's Apollo Go service currently operates over 1,000 vehicles across 15 cities globally and has completed more than 11 million rides, but its partnership with Lyft marks its first commercial move into Europe.
