Uttarakhand reels under heavy rain fury; 15 missing, key highways washed away, orange alert in seven districts
An orange alert has been issued for seven districts, while authorities search for 15 people missing in separate rain-related incidents. The incessant downpour and subsequent landslides are making rescue and recovery operations incredibly difficult.
Rescue operations are underway to locate 15 individuals who went missing in two separate incidents. A Tempo Traveller plunged into the Alaknanda River last week, claiming three lives, and seven individuals are still untraceable. In a separate incident near Silai Band, six labourers went missing after a road was completely washed away by surging waters.
The Rishikesh-Yamunotri National Highway in Uttarkashi has been entirely washed away near Silai Band and Aujhari, bringing all vehicular movement to a halt. The Kalsi-Chakrata State Highway in Dehradun district is also closed due to a massive debris slide. However, several key routes remain open, including the Rishikesh-Gangotri National Highway and the Rishikesh-Badrinath and Joshimath-Malari-Niti National Highways.
The scale of disruption is significant, with a staggering number of roads closed across various districts due to debris. These include 15 roads in Uttarkashi, 11 in Tehri, nine in Rudraprayag, five in Pithoragarh, 48 in Pauri, two in Nainital, nine in Dehradun, 15 in Champawat, 21 in Chamoli, 16 in Bageshwar, and two in Almora district.

She said she was forced to travel by the TT, given the uncertainty of bus availability. Another woman in her late 70s, Lakshmamma, said, 'This government is playing with our daily life by not acting according to the situation. Someone said there was a strike, some said there wasn't, and now I have to take a private vehicle as I didn't find any buses from HSR Layout and I don't have that kind of money.'

Back from Nepal, sequestered councillors pick deputies in Manesar mayor's absence
Gurgaon: The stage seemed set for high drama, but the poll to elect two deputies to the mayor of Manesar municipal corporation ended on Tuesday with an unopposed victory for candidates pitched by the faction loyal to minister and BJP MLA Rao Narbir Singh. Parveen Yadav, the councillor from Ward 12, was elected senior deputy mayor while Ward 2's Reema Chauhan became deputy mayor. The absence of mayor Inderjeet Kaur Yadav — an Independent supported by the other faction led by Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh — was notable. She cited medical reasons for her absence, sending a letter to MCM commissioner Ayush Sinha just 15 minutes after the election proceedings began around 10.30am. The tour was organised by Devender Singh Shikohpur, a Narbir loyalist. The councillors arrived in Manesar on Monday evening. Badshapur MLA and cabinet minister Rao Narbir, who arrived in a Tempo Traveller at the MCM office with the dozen BJP councillors around 10.30pm, said he was happy with the outcome. "BJP has won both the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor. This is the first election in which unanimous victory has been attained," he said. The minister, however, denied any factionalism within the party. "There are no factions of Rao Narbir or Rao Inderjit. Both the winning posts belong to the BJP. It's one party after all." BJP's position in MCM has strengthened since the civic elections in March, when the party won only seven seats compared to 13 Independents. Seven Independent councillors later joined BJP, giving it a 14-seat majority in the 20-member house. The newly elected deputies emphasised their focus on development, particularly sanitation. "We haven't been able to work for four months. Our primary focus is improving Manesar's cleanliness over the next 15 days," the senior deputy mayor said. Chauhan echoed this sentiment, pledging transparency in sanitation-related tenders and prioritising cleanliness. The election's outcome points to a shift in local political dynamics, with the Rao Narbir camp gaining an upper hand. However, with the mayor belonging to the opposing faction, the corporation's functioning could face challenges requiring political negotiations, observers pointed out. Shikohpur, who had organised the councillors' tour, maintained it was a pre-planned religious visit. "We had made plans two months ago to visit famous Shiva temples during the month of sawan, including the Pashupatinath temple in Nepal," he said.

7 killed as vehicle falls into gorge in Doda
JAMMU: Seven people, including a woman, died and 17 others were injured, four critically, when an overloaded passenger vehicle skidded off the road on Tuesday and plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district. The Tempo Traveller was on its way to Doda from Aul area when the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a blind curve and fell near Ponda village. Police and residents rushed the victims to Govt Medical College and Hospital in Doda. 'Five were brought dead. The injured are being treated in the emergency unit,' officials said. As an immediate relief, deputy commissioner Harvinder Singh said he has released Rs 25,000 each to the next of kin of the deceased. Senior SP Sandeep Mehta said a case of rash and negligent driving besides overloading has been filed. Further probe is on, he said. Lt Governor Manoj Sinha condoled the deaths and prayed for speedy recovery of the injured. Union minister Jitendra Singh wrote on X, 'All possible help and medical aid is being provided.' Congress's Ghulam Mohammad Saroori expressed grief and urged the govt to provide Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia to familied of the deceased.
