Bursa Malaysia bucks regional trend to end lower, sans fresh local leads
KUALA LUMPUR — Bursa Malaysia bucked the regional trend to settle lower on Thursday, as selling pressure in selected banking heavyweights dampened sentiment, in the absence of fresh domestic catalysts coupled with an unexciting batch of corporate earnings releases, said an analyst.
At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) slipped 4.50 points, or 0.29 per cent, to 1,518.98 from Wednesday's close of 1,523.48.
The benchmark index opened 2.12 points higher at 1,525.60 and fluctuated between 1,518.38 and 1,526.94 throughout the day.
In the broader market, decliners beat gainers 478 to 466, while 460 counters were unchanged, 982 untraded and 110 suspended.
Turnover expanded to 3.30 billion units worth RM2.22 billion compared with Wednesday's 2.50 billion units worth RM2.03 billion.
Apex Securities Bhd head of research Kenneth Leong expects that the key index may attempt to find stability above the 1,500 level on the back of potential bargain hunting, going forward.
'Still, we believe that any potential gains could be capped by the resumption of foreign funds outflow.
'Looking ahead, investors will be keeping a close watch on the second reading of the US first-quarter 2025 gross domestic product data to be released later tonight,' he told Bernama.
Domestically, Leong said the key focus remains on the ongoing corporate earnings releases.
Meanwhile, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said the release of the latest US Federal Reserve (Fed) minutes proved pivotal.
'The Fed's reaffirmation of its cautious stance—highlighting persistent inflationary pressures and resilient US macroeconomic data—has effectively tempered market expectations for a near-term rate cut.'
'This recalibration in rate outlook translated into upward pressure on global yields, a dynamic to which Malaysia's banking-heavy benchmark index remains acutely sensitive,' he told Bernama.
Mohd Sedek said the uplift in regional equities was underpinned by a US federal court's decision to block President Donald Trump's proposed 'Liberation Day' tariffs, which materially improved global risk appetite. However, domestic sentiment remained subdued, weighed down by profit-taking in heavyweight banking counters.
Among heavyweights, Maybank gained three sen to RM9.87 and CIMB increased one sen to RM6.88. Public Bank and Tenaga Nasional fell two sen each to RM4.31 and RM14.08 respectively, while IHH Healthcare was flat at RM6.91.

On the index board, the FBM Emas Index slid 14.84 points to 11,382.33, the FBM ACE Index rose 42.82 points to 4,592.16, but the FBMT 100 Index fell 19.34 points to 11,142.02.
The FBM Emas Shariah Index lost 9.68 points to 11,365.83 while the FBM 70 Index perked up 25.65 points to 16,332.31.

The Main Market volume improved to 1.56 billion units valued at RM1.93 billion against Wednesday's 1.34 billion units valued at RM1.80 billion.
Warrants turnover swelled to 1.37 billion units worth RM164.04 million from 815.91 million units worth RM113.60 million previously.
The ACE Market volume advanced to 364.60 million shares worth RM120.88 million from 346.43 million shares worth RM119.44 million yesterday.
Consumer products and services counters accounted for 354.51 million shares traded on the Main Market, industrial products and services (317.02 million), construction (98.30 million), technology (235.43 million), SPAC (nil), financial services (70.33 million), property (170.33 million), plantation (14.93 million), REITs (88.90 million), closed/fund (2,700), energy (150.03 million), healthcare (36.24 million), telecommunications and media (56.54 million), transportation and logistics (15.65 million), utilities (34.86 million), and business trusts (23,400). — BERNAMA

Japan's lower House passes bill to ban online casinos
TOKYO (Bernama-Xinhua): Japan's House of Representatives passed Tuesday a bill to impose a ban on opening and operating online casino websites in the country. The lower chamber of parliament cleared the bill to revise a law on tackling gambling addiction by a majority vote. The revision, which prohibits websites from guiding users to casino sites, came amid recent revelations of the use of virtual casinos by a number of athletes and celebrities. According to a police survey released in March, 3.37 million people in Japan are estimated to have gambled at online casinos, with around 1.24 trillion yen (about US$8.7 billion) being spent annually. Gambling is illegal in Japan even if an online casino is operating legally overseas. The revised law is expected to be enacted during the current parliamentary session through June 22. - Bernama-Xinhua

Bursa ends lower amid US tariff concerns
KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia erased early gains to close lower for the sixth consecutive day today, weighed down by selling pressure in regional emerging markets due to concerns over the ongoing US tariff conflict, said an analyst. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said key regional indices closed mixed amid uncertainties surrounding US president Donald Trump's tariff war, prompting cautious investor behaviour. European equities slipped at the open due to weak sentiment and in anticipation of upcoming eurozone inflation figures. In contrast, markets in China and Hong Kong rallied on hopes of renewed US-China trade talks. On the domestic front, market sentiment remains subdued as investors adopt a wait-and-see stance amid ongoing foreign selling and escalating global trade uncertainties involving the US. The benchmark index is currently near its psychological 1,500 support level. 'Despite these challenges, we view this as an opportunity to pick up blue-chip stocks at lower prices due to their strong fundamentals, attractive valuations, and appealing dividend yields. 'As such, we anticipate the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) to trend within the 1,490-1,520 range for the week,' Thong told Bernama. Meanwhile, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Sedek Jantan said market caution has intensified amid growing fears of a tariff-driven global slowdown and weakening external demand. Although the US has extended a pause on tariffs for certain Chinese goods until Aug 31, tensions have flared after Beijing rejected US accusations of breaching the existing tariff truce, instead blaming Washington for backtracking. 'A potential call between Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping this week may offer much-needed clarity on the future direction of trade relations,' he said. Locally, Malaysia's manufacturing purchasing managers' index edged up to 48.8 in May from April, but remained below the 50-point threshold, signalling continued contraction. 'Weak new orders and declining output reflect persistent demand weakness. 'As a trade-reliant economy, Malaysia remains vulnerable to global trade disruptions, with export-oriented sectors, particularly industrial products, technology, and small-cap stocks, most exposed to downside risks,' Sedek added. At 5pm, the FBM KLCI eased 5.10 points, or 0.33%, to 1,503.25 from last Friday's close of 1,508.35. The benchmark index opened 4.37 points higher at 1,512.72 and moved between 1,497.42 and 1,514.12 throughout the trading session. Market breadth was negative with decliners thumping gainers 705 to 297, while 423 counters were unchanged, 921 untraded and 15 suspended. Turnover fell to 3.04 billion units valued at RM2.20 billion compared with last Friday's 3.21 billion units worth RM5.04 billion. Bursa Malaysia was closed yesterday in conjunction with the official birthday of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim. Among the heavyweights, Petronas Chemicals dipped 14 sen to RM3.28, QL Resources fell 10 sen to RM4.40, IHH Healthcare eased 15 sen to RM6.75, Press Metal dropped nine sen to RM4.95, and Hong Leong Financial Group lost 28 sen to RM16.30. Among active stocks, Permaju Industries eased 0.5 sen to one sen, ACE Market debutant ICT Zone Asia, Tanco, and Harvest Miracle Capital were flat each at 20 sen, RM1 and 18 sen respectively, and MyEG slipped three sen to 89 sen. On the index board, the FBM Emas Index trimmed 45.35 points to 11,254.45, the FBMT 100 Index lost 38.28 points to 11,022.72, and the FBM ACE Index sank 69.22 points to 4,481.81. The FBM Emas Shariah Index decreased 46.10 points to 11,210.15, while the FBM 70 Index retreated 59.35 points to 16,142.16. Sector-wise, the financial services index slid 77.90 points to 17,762.63, the industrial products and services index shed 2.57 points to 150.08, and the energy index fell 9.08 points to 698.96, but the plantation index increased 11.03 points to 7,218.88. The Main Market volume declined to 1.21 billion units worth RM1.90 billion against Friday's 1.88 billion units valued at RM4.82 billion. Warrants turnover expanded to 1.50 billion units valued at RM201.92 million from 1 billion units worth RM111.49 million previously. The ACE Market volume advanced to 323.10 million shares worth RM94.99 million versus 318.43 million shares worth RM107.68 million on Friday. Consumer products and services counters accounted for 270.72 million shares traded on the Main Market, industrial products and services (184.66 million), construction (76.45 million), technology (139.98 million), SPAC (nil), financial services (85.81 million), property (164.11 million), plantation (29.49 million), REITs (11.64 million), closed/fund (3,400), energy (106.55 million), healthcare (57.20 million), telecommunications and media (43.34 million), transportation and logistics (18.57 million), utilities (31.21 million), and business trusts (20,700).

Singapore's SMRT to be fined RM9.9mil for six-day train service disruption last September
Releasing the findings of its months-long investigation into the incident, LTA said degraded grease was likely to have caused a faulty part of a train's undercarriage to fall out, which precipitated the disruption on the morning of Sept 25, 2024. - Photo: Straits Times/ANN SINGAPORE (Bernama): Singapore's public transport operator SMRT will be fined S$3 million (RM9.9 million) following a six-day MRT service disruption on the East-West Line (EWL) in September last year, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA). LTA said that in determining the penalty amount, the agency took into account that SMRT had borne the cost of repairs and had provided free bridging buses and regular bus services, as well as shuttle train services at the affected stations. "It also provided free travel to passengers alighting at Jurong East and Buona Vista stations for the six days of disruption. The total costs amounted to over S$10 million,' it said in a statement on Tuesday. The penalty will be channelled to the Public Transport Fund to help lower-income families with their public transport expenses. LTA said its investigation into the Sept 25 to 30, 2024 service disruption concluded that the likely cause was degraded grease in the axle box, which subsequently led to overheating and failure. This conclusion was supported by the presence and location of burnt rubber and metal pieces from the chevron springs found along the path of the affected train. However, the agency noted that it was not possible to establish a definitive root cause. On Sept 25, 2024, a dislodged axle box caused the wheels of the third car of a Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) train to fall off the track, damaging the tracks between Dover station and Ulu Pandan Depot. The incident resulted in MRT service disruption between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations. Repair works were carried out over six days, and full services resumed on Oct 1, 2024. - Bernama
