For Deacon, what makes these expert fliers interesting is that they are valuable insects for assessing water and land quality. 'Groups of dragonfly species in a defined habitat can tell us a lot about deteriorating environmental conditions and the requirements to restore degraded areas.'
To ensure the long-term survival of dragonflies and other creatures that share their habitats, they must be included more widely in biodiversity conservation efforts and policies. This is the key recommendation from a group of dragonfly experts from 17 countries, including South Africa, Mexico, Australia and the United States.

Deacon noted that although dragonflies are sensitive to changes in their habitats, at the same time, they can recover remarkably well when environmental pressure is lifted. 'This means that we can investigate them to learn how we can improve conditions for them, and the other creatures they share their habitats with.'
Dragonflies inspire curiosity and appreciation, he said. 'Being surrounded by dragonflies, it is striking to notice their charisma — most dragonflies appear to be attuned to the presence of people in their environments, some would even approach visitors, sometimes seemingly posing for just long enough to show off their beauty.'

According to the review, dragonflies could also help measure the success of conservation efforts.
Some examples include the global reduction of human exploitation of wetlands through sustainable land-use practices, beaver reintroduction programmes in Europe, habitat restoration programmes including management of highly invasive alien species, sustainable drainage systems development in cities to enhance resilience to extreme weather and water-related events — creating new dragonfly habitats — and clean energy projects.
South Africa is home to 65 damselfly species and 96 dragonfly species. Population sizes vary from one location to the next, and according to environmental conditions, Deacon said.
'For example, during wet years, dragonfly population sizes may be inflated, while during dry years, dragonfly populations decline. The dragonfly species with specific habitat requirements are most at risk, while those with broader habitat preferences are more resilient, even benefitting from artificial habitats in urban and agricultural areas.'
In South Africa,
Dragonfly survival depends on both land and water. 'They breed in water, and this is where the eggs and larvae are found. But the surrounding land is where the adults are found, and where they mature, hunt, pursue mates, and seek suitable habitat to breed.'
About a third of the species found in South Africa are endemic. 'While the northeastern region of South Africa is home to the widest variety of species, most endemic species are found in the Western Cape,' Deacon said.
In their review, the scientists said it is essential to continue and expand the assessment and monitoring of dragonfly population sizes, distributions and the groups of species that live in specific areas.
This information feeds into international conservation prioritisation frameworks and initiatives for understanding conservation risks and declines relative to human pressures and ongoing climate change.
'Monitoring and evaluation during the early stages of conservation programmes are critical to ensure that dragonfly populations, habitats and ecosystems are effectively assessed over time. This approach also helps to quantify threats and measure the level of conservation success. Information gathered through assessment and monitoring must be translated into practical conservation efforts and policy decisions.
By including dragonflies in broader conservation initiatives, conservation policies and management globally will become more effective. 'We need policies that focus on overall biodiversity protection, with dragonflies being an important component,' the authors said.
The ability of dragonflies to survive under different environmental conditions depends on the traits or characteristics of individual species.
'For some species, these traits may help them adapt to or benefit from human activities, such as creation of ponds. Others, however, may lack these traits, making them vulnerable to local extinction. While databases on the traits of dragonflies are expanding, other unknown characteristics may also play a role in their ability to adapt to changing environments.'
The researchers called for conservation efforts that link water and land, improve connectivity between habitats, and better maintain water and soil quality. This landscape approach is based on the idea that efforts to protect dragonflies will also benefit other organisms that share similar habitats and requirements.
'Updating regional species lists and developing field guides and digital applications help with species identification. These resources also have great potential to develop knowledge on how they live in ecosystems and interact with plants and animals they share these ecosystems with.'
The scientists emphasised the value of citizen science in enhancing research on conservation and management requirements. 'Understanding the cultural role of dragonflies across various regions, will, in turn, spark interest in them, encourage a desire to protect them, and feed into policymaking.'

NHI is fiscally impossible, says the Health Funders Association
The Health Funders Association (HFA) has described the National Health Insurance (NHI) Act as fiscally impossible and has tabled a hybrid funding model that will enable private healthcare providers to provide services in tandem with the NHI. The HFA, accounting for 46% of the private healthcare market and representing 21 medical schemes and three administrators, this week became the latest entity to legally challenge the NHI for undermining the right of medical aid members to choose how to access health services. HFA commissioned an independent study released this week which found the NHI required substantial tax far beyond South Africa's fiscal capacity. 'What's more, the proposed model offers no guarantee of improved outcomes, while restricting the mechanisms that currently drive quality and innovation in health care,' said the FHA. Commenting on the report, HFA CEO Thoneshan Naidoo said South Africa needs a healthcare system that delivers equitable, quality care for all. 'However, in its current form, and without private sector collaboration, the NHI Act is fiscally impossible and operationally unworkable, and threatens the stability of the economy and health system affecting everyone in South Africa,' he said. Naidoo said the NHI Act centralises control of all healthcare financing in a single, state-run fund, removing the ability of medical schemes to offer cover for healthcare services reimbursable by the NHI. 'We continue to advocate for a more inclusive, hybrid funding model that incorporates medical schemes in NHI. We believe such a model would expand access to care while protecting the rights of all South Africans,' said Naidoo. The NHI, which introduces universal health coverage, has been challenged in court by Solidarity, the Board of Healthcare Funders, the South African Private Practitioners Forum, the Hospital Association of South Africa and the South African Medical Association. Foster Mohale, the health spokesperson, on Friday confirmed the department had received court papers. 'This is case number six. We have an evolving court process and we'll allow that process to take its course,' said Mohale. FHA commissioned a report by Genesis Analytics, which showed that personal income tax will need to increase from the current average rate of 21% to an average of 46% of income, pushing marginal tax rates in the lowest income bracket from 18% to 41%, and in the highest bracket from 45% to 68%. The Genesis model also considered a scenario of pooling existing healthcare expenditure, citing that personal income tax would need to increase from its average of 21% to 31%. At the same time, medical scheme members would face a 43% reduction in the level of healthcare services relative to what they currently received. 'In simple terms, the equation for medical scheme members therefore becomes 'Pay 1.5 times more tax for 43% less healthcare'. Dehorning rhinos cuts poaching by 78%, landmark study finds

(Photo supplied) The research, published in the prestigious journal Science , focused on 11 reserves in South Africa's Greater Kruger region from 2017 to 2023 — a critical global stronghold that conserves about a quarter of all Africa's rhinos. The Greater Kruger, spanning Mpumalanga and Limpopo, includes the Kruger National Park and the private nature reserves around it, and is an umbrella for the various private game reserves that make up the unfenced protected wilderness that lies adjacent to the Kruger Park. 'Kruger National Park had a rhino population of about 12 000 back in 2012,' said the study's lead author, 'Today, we're sitting at around probably below 2 000, so there's been a The project was a 'mammoth effort' involving wide collaboration between reserve managers under the banner of the They documented the poaching of 1 985 rhinos (about 6.5% of the population annually). 'Statistically-speaking, we had eight different sites and were able to isolate these massive reductions in poaching and link them to the wide-scale dehorning of rhinos.' Dehorning rhinos to reduce incentives for poaching – with 2 284 rhinos dehorned across eight reserves – was found to achieve a 78% reduction in poaching, using just 1.2% of the overall rhino protection budget. This was based on a comparison between sites with and without dehorning as well as changes in poaching before and after dehorning. Reserves under the study invested R1 billion in anti-poaching interventions from 2017 to 2021. Most of the investment focused on reactive law enforcement — rangers, tracker dogs, helicopters, access controls and detection cameras — helping to achieve over 700 poacher arrests. It costs R10 200 per dehorning operation. 'But we failed to find evidence that those arrests translated into less future poaching,' he pointed out. 'So, on one level these interventions were successful but they did not result in the same level of reduction in poaching as dehorning did.' There are key reasons for this, including 'The internal involvement of reserve staff with the criminal syndicates who are driving poaching means that these syndicates and the poachers can get around the interventions because they have information on where the rangers are going to be, where the rhinos are, where the cameras are [and] where the dogs are,' Kuiper said. The region, too, suffers from a 'great deal of 'And, the criminal syndicates take advantage of these community members, for example by offering to give them loans, and when they can't pay back the loans, they say, 'Well, here's a gun. Finally, an ineffective criminal justice system means that arrested offenders often escape punishment, according to evidence from studies on 'The criminal justice system, the internal corruption and the 'In the worst case, these interventions may also isolate the people living around these reserves in terms of their involvement in conservation,' he said. Kuiper cautioned that dehorning must not be seen as a silver bullet. 'We did document over 100 dehorned rhinos being poached. The horn regrows, so in many of these cases, the horn had regrown quite a lot and the rhino was poached. 'This points to the need for regular dehorning but also points to the fact that syndicates are adapting and seem still to be willing to poach a rhino, even if there's only 5cm to 10cm of horn left on the rhino. But, of all of the interventions, we analysed it [dehorning] led to drastic reductions in poaching.' More recent evidence has emerged since the study concluded in 2023 suggesting that the poaching of dehorned rhinos is a growing challenge. Dehorning may also shift the focus of poachers to horned populations elsewhere, Kuiper noted. A multi-faceted approach is necessary. 'We need to look at wider systematic solutions addressing poverty, addressing socio-economic inequality, addressing the demand for rhino horn in consumer rates.' Sharon Hausmann, the chief executive of the GKEPF, which led the initiative by convening manager workshops and gathering data for the evaluation, said: 'The true value of this innovative study, conceived by GKEPF operational managers, lies in its collective critical thinking. Ensuring not only that operations are guided by science, but also that science is grounded in real experience from the frontline.' Markus Hofmeyr of the Rhino Recovery Fund, said: 'From a donor perspective, this study has given excellent insight where conservation donor funding can be spent and where to avoid funding.'

South Africa to ramp up vaccinations as foot-and-mouth disease spreads
South Africa is building up vaccine stocks and expanding inoculations to fight a worsening foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak, the agriculture ministry said, as the country faces threats to beef supplies. FMD is a highly contagious viral infection of cloven-hoofed animals that may also affect other species. Flare-ups have been reported over the past several months in five provinces, with KwaZulu-Natal being the worst affected. This week Karan Beef, which operates the country's largest feedlot and one of the world's biggest, reported an outbreak at its facility in Heidelberg, about 50km southeast of Johannesburg. The quarantine imposed on the feedlot, which slaughters about 2,000 cattle daily, could affect beef supplies. The government has ordered more than 900,000 doses of FMD vaccines, with the first batch expected to arrive next week, the ministry said on Thursday. 'These plans are not only about responding to outbreaks but also about building permanent infrastructure to manage future risks,' it said.
