How to Scan a QR Code Using Any Android Phone or iPhone

CNETa day ago

QR codes are those square barcode-looking things that when scanned by your iPhone 16 Pro, Galaxy S25 Ultra or any other phone, can send you straight to a particular webpage or to download an app, all without having to type in a complicated URL. While they used to be a rare sight, many businesses -- especially restaurants -- adopted them during the pandemic as a way of giving easy access to information like menus, without you having to touch anything.

They can be great time-savers, but they're not always obvious in how to use them, particularly if you have an older Android phone. Here's how to scan a QR code with any phone.
How to scan a QR code on an Android phone
As QR codes have become more common, more manufacturers have built QR scanners directly into the default camera app. Most phones (whether iPhone or Android) bought within the past few years will be able to scan them because the function has been built directly into Android and iOS, but if you're using a much older handset on outdated software then you may not. If that's the case, you should also know that it's not safe to use a phone that doesn't receive software updates anymore.
Here's how to do it:
Open your phone's camera
Point it at the QR code, ensuring that it's in focus and can be clearly seen
If a link appears on screen, tap it to open
Give it a try: Scan this QR code with your phone's camera.

If no link appears it may either be that the camera can't recognise it as a QR code or your phone doesn't support QR code scanning in the camera app. If that's the case you'll need to download a QR code scanner.

While there are loads of QR scanners available for free in the Google Play store, the best option is Google's own Google Lens, which offers a variety of text scanning and translation tools but also has a QR scanner. Download and install the app (if it isn't already a default app on your phone) and when you open it, grant permission to use the camera.

Then, point it at your QR code and the app will reveal the hidden information, be it a website link or whatever. Keep the scanner app in a location you'll remember as you'll need to use it whenever you want to scan a QR code.

YouTube has once again figured out how to stop some of your favorite ways to block ads

Joe Maring / Android Authority TL;DR YouTube has strengthened its defence against ad blockers. Free users are in uproar that their ad blockers are no longer working on the site. YouTube has long been cracking down on viewers who use ad blockers on its site. If you try to watch a video with an ad blocker on, playback won't be enabled until you turn the extension off. Although the platform is pretty effective at stopping most ad blockers, there are a few options that do still work. However, it appears YouTube has found a way to close some of those remaining gaps in its defense. In the latest chapter of this long-running ad blocker saga, a growing number of free users are showing frustration over not being able to use YouTube's service without having to sit through ads. Reports on Reddit claim that some previous workarounds, like uBlock Origin and AdBlock, are no longer working. As a result, these users are starting to see warnings, like the one in the image below. In other cases, the home page on YouTube is completely blank. As you can probably imagine, this development has led to the creation of various threads bashing Google for its stance against ad blockers. To play devil's advocate for a second, it's important to note that the revenue drawn from ads also helps the creators of the videos you're trying to watch. A new solution will likely pop up at some point to replace these previous workarounds. At the same time, YouTube will also probably find a way to further improve its defense. It seems like YouTube is just as stubborn about its anti-ad blocker stance as users are about refusing to pay for Premium or Premium Lite. Got a tip? Talk to us! Musk has a history of acrimonious breakups

The relationship between President Donald Trump and billionaire and self-styled 'first buddy' Elon Musk ruptured this week, with the former allies trading insults and threats on social media. It's not the first time Musk has fallen out with his associates. Take a look at Musk's past quarrels with business colleagues. Musk helped found ChatGPT-maker OpenAI and was a major funder of the artificial intelligence project. But he split with his co-founders in 2018 and later sued to stop OpenAI's restructuring, accusing the company's executives of pivoting away from its nonprofit mission. He now has a competing AI start-up, xAI. OpenAI has countersued Musk for harassment and accused him of 'spreading false information about us.' (The Washington Post has a content partnership with OpenAI.) The feud has extended to personal jabs between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. This year, Musk and a group of investors offered to buy OpenAI's assets for $97.4 billion, far below the company's $157 billion valuation. Altman shot down the bid in a social media post but offered to pay $9.74 billion for Musk's X, formerly Twitter. Musk purchased Twitter for $44 billion in 2022. 'Swindler,' Musk replied. Musk bought Twitter in 2022, saying he wanted to promote free speech. He used a combination of his own wealth, bank loans and a long list of investors to complete the transaction, which was delayed by a months-long court battle, after he tried to back out of the deal and Twitter's board sued. Musk instituted steep cuts and overhauled the site's user experience. Though former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey initially endorsed Musk's takeover, he later reversed course and said Musk was not the right person for the job. Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning incorporated Tesla in 2003, but Musk and two other employees are also considered co-founders under the terms of a later lawsuit settlement. Musk, an early investor in the electric vehicle maker, became chairman in 2004, years before the company sold its first car. Eberhard was Tesla's first chief executive. The Musk-led board forced him to step down in 2007, and he left the company in 2008. Musk has said Eberhard created a 'false narrative' that Musk invested in Tesla when it was an existing business and called him 'by far the worst person I've ever worked with in my entire career.' Eberhard had previously sued Musk for libel, slander and breach of contract; that case resulted in the settlement that acknowledged Musk as a co-founder. A payments company co-founded by Musk merged with software company Confinity to create PayPal in 2000. His fellow PayPal co-founders orchestrated a coup against Musk later that year, ousting him as CEO while he was on his honeymoon and replacing him with Peter Thiel, according to Musk biographies. Among the points of tension: Musk wanted to broaden the company's ambitions and make the letter X more prominent in its branding, according to a Thiel biography. Despite their clashes at PayPal, Thiel later invested in SpaceX, and the two men have become more aligned politically. The Trump-Musk feud has been great for X, which jumped up the App Store charts

The feud between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump may be bad for the MAGA camp, but it's proven to be beneficial for X, which has seen engagement soaring over the past 24 hours. According to new data from Sensor Tower, the app formerly known as Twitter skyrocketed up the U.S. App Store's top charts, landing at the 23rd overall spot on June 5 — up from an average rank of 68 over the last 30 days. X also saw an average rank of number 58 over the past six months. The ranking changes could be influenced by increased downloads and engagements with the X application. Meanwhile, X's ranking on Google Play in the U.S. climbed as well, up around 20 spots from the prior seven-day average and up 16 spots from the average over the past 30 days. Sensor Tower estimates that total U.S. mobile app active users on X on June 5 increased by 6%, likely as a result of the Trump-Musk breakup, which captured the internet's interest. Specifically, the firm found that U.S. mobile app active users on X between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern time on June 5 were up by 54% compared to the last seven days. Trump's own social network, Truth Social, benefited from the feud as well, as the president shared his thoughts about Musk with his followers. Compared with the last seven days, U.S. mobile app active users on Truth Social increased by more than 400%, Sensor Tower's proprietary panel indicates. Across both apps, the number of U.S. mobile app active users between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern reached a 90-day high. X is continuing to grow its rank in the wake of the Trump-Musk breakup. As of the time of writing, the app is the 19th top free iPhone app on the U.S. App Store. Truth Social is number 14 in the Social Networking category, but is ranked below number 150 overall on the free iPhone apps chart on the U.S. App Store.
