Eight core industries record 0.5 per cent growth in April
New Delhi: The combined index of eight core industries increased by 0.5 per cent in April 2025 as compared to the same month of the previous year, according to data released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry on Tuesday.
The production of steel, cement, coal, electricity, and natural gas recorded positive growth in April this year, according to the official statement.
The eight core industries comprise 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) and are an indicator of the overall industrial growth.
Steel production, which has close to 18 per cent weight in the index increased by 3.0 per cent in April, 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year. Its cumulative index increased by 6.9 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Cement production increased by 6.7 per cent during the month while its cumulative index increased by 6.3 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Both the steel and cement sector have shown strong growth as the government's massive investments in big ticket infrastructure projects such as highways, railways, seaports and airports have spurred demand for these products. Besides, there has also been a pick-up in the construction industry.
Electricity generation, which has a weight of close to 20 per cent in the index, increased by 1 per cent in April, 2025 over the same month of the previous year. Its cumulative index increased by 5.2 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Coal production increased by 3.5 per cent in April 2025 over the same month last year, with its cumulative growth at 5.1 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over corresponding period of the previous year.
Natural gas production increased by 0.4 per cent in April this year compard to the same month last year. However, crude oil production declined by 2.8 per cent during the month compared to April 2024 year due to the ageing oilfields of ONGC.
Petroleum refinery production declined by 4.5 per cent in April, 2025 over the same month last year. Its cumulative index increased by 2.8 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Fertiliser production declined by 4.2 per cent in April 2025, over the same month last year while its cumulative index increased by 2.9 per cent during April to March, 2024-25 over corresponding period of the previous year.
The final growth rate of the eight core industries for January 2025 was observed at 5.1 per cent. The cumulative growth rate of the core sector during April to March, 2024-25 now works out to 4.5 per cent as compared to the corresponding period of last year, the official statement said.

Around Town: 3rd gen revives 80-year-old C D'Souza, a Goan culinary landmark in South Bombay; what's changed
In the late 19th century, many Goans migrated to then-Bombay in search of better livelihoods or stayed here briefly at one of the many clubs (kudds) before setting off on sailing jobs. To cater to them, Caricade D'Souza, a gentleman from Mapusa who settled in Bombay after working as a Railways technician, started a Goan restaurant in the early 1940s at Dukkar Galli, now Dr Cawasji Hormusji Street. He served authentic, homely Goan meals and named the establishment C D'Souza. 'We offered all the popular dishes, from poie bread to sorpotel, vindaloo, cafreal, xacuti, and more,' recalled his grandson Jude D'Souza, 60, who now runs the place along with his brother Carey (named after their grandfather Caricade), representing the third generation in the family business. But Caricade D'Souza's journey in the food business had started a few years before that. 'After retiring from service, he began working in cafés and patisseries in Bombay, learning the tricks of the trade,' they shared. Legend has it that it was a case of espionage that led to his first establishment. 'An Italian gentleman named A Comba was arrested by the police on charges of being a spy, and his eponymous confectionery was put up for auction. My grandfather outran everyone in the bid and took it over,' shared Jude. He reopened the space in the late 1930s and named it 'Marosas' after his wife, Maria Ruzai. He even bailed Comba out and hired him. Together, they ran a thriving café that drew actors and politicians for tea and snacks. 'Marosas did silver service and tea was served English-breakfast style, with milk and sugar separately. Their Sicilian ice cream, with chocolate sandwiched between two layers of vanilla, was said to be to die for,' Jude added. B R Ambedkar, architect of the Indian Constitution, would often drop by during High Court visits. Actor Raj Kapoor was a regular too. Marosas eventually shut in 1984 when the building went in for redevelopment. Back at C D'Souza, business flourished, and Caricade involved many family members — some in the kitchen, others in service. 'For many Goans landing in Bombay, it was the first stop — and later, a second home,' recalled Jude. Goans had settled in neighbourhoods like Sonapur, Cavel, and Khotachiwadi, keeping the restaurant bustling. After Caricade's passing in 1971, his wife Ruzai and son Janeiro took over. Later, Janeiro's wife Philomena and elder son Carey carried it forward. 'We were always well-known, but about 10–15 years ago, when many Goans began moving to the suburbs, business started to dip. Covid was the final nail,' said Jude. C D'Souza shut temporarily, and remained closed after Philomena passed away. Jude, who was then working with an MNC abroad, returned in 2022. 'There wasn't a good Goan restaurant offering authentic, homely fare in South Bombay. It was time to revive the family legacy — C D'Souza.' Now called C D'Souza Marosas, the restaurant, opened in 2023, got a lease of life: bentwood chairs were polished, upholstery changed, and walls repainted. Adding a lot of colour are paintings by Goan artist Derek Monteiro. The menu, just one page long, features beloved Goan staples: ross omelette, potato chops, prawn recheado, chicken xacuti, pork sorpotel, and vindaloo, served between 11.30 am to 7.30 pm. A counter beside the cashier displays desserts like fruit tarts and traditional Goan baath cake. Our favourite was the chicken cafreal, a green-hued, intense, semi-dry gravy made with coriander and chillies. Paired with poie, it instantly evokes the feeling of a Goan home where a susegad nap is the only post-lunch plan. The snacks included generously sized potato chops, made with chicken or pork, and puff pattices (with a vegetarian option too). The chops, filled with perfectly spiced minced meat and encased in a smooth potato layer, are the kind you keep returning to. We also sampled Goan chorizo sausages — an item sourced from Goa, along with the local vinegar that flavours nearly every gravy. 'Three weeks ago, we also started breakfast service on Sundays, due to popular demand from those who can't visit on weekdays,' Jude shared, adding that they haven't promoted themselves yet but are getting customers based on word-of-mouth. The clientele, he shared, is no longer limited to Goans — Parsis, Maharashtrians, Mangaloreans, and others now happily travel to Dukkar Galli for a satisfying, homestyle Goan meal. As for dinner and delivery? 'That's in the works,' he smiled. 'Should be up and running in a few months.'

Indian Railways invites applications for K-Ride MD post to fast-track Bengaluru Suburban Rail project
BENGALURU: After a long gap to speed up completion of the Suburban Rail project, Indian Railways has put out an advertisement, calling for applications for the post of Managing Director of Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited (K-Ride). Experts and officials in K-Ride said this is a welcome and much-needed move to pace up the project. The Railways has listed details of the post which is for a duration of three years. According to K-Ride sources, the only time the department had a full time managing director was in 2021, when Amit Garg held the post. After that, many IAS officers have been posted, holding concurrent charge. 'With Railways inviting applications, it shows the push. But this is also late -- when the foundation for the project was laid in June 2022 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he had assured its completion in 40 months, and the term ends in October 2025. However, the MD's official posting will take at least another two months as the last date to submit applications for the post is July 5, 2025,' the source said. The government has listed out criteria details for the post: The applicant should not be above 55 years of age as on March 31, 2025. The applicant should have a minimum of 25 years experience of which at least five years should be in Senior Administrative Grade. The applicant should also have five years experience or more in the planning/ design/ execution of railway-related infrastructure projects. The criterion also stated: 'It is desirable to have the experience of projects report preparation, sanction, resource mobilization and coordination with other ministers and stake holders.' Experts also pointed out that the state and central governments have not taken serious note of the need to execute the project. The long delays have only made Bengaluru's traffic management worse.

Why Indian Railways Deactivated 2.5 Crore "Bogus" IDs On IRCTC
The Indian Railways has deactivated 2.5 crore "bogus" user IDs and put around 20 lakh others under revalidation to curb unauthorised automated bookings by unscrupulous agents. This will significantly improve the access to genuine users on IRCTC website and app, the Ministry of Railways said. The department deployed cutting-edge anti-BOT systems and integrated with a leading Content Delivery Network (CDN) service provider to make it possible. Besides enhancing transparency, the step will improve security and user experience as well. Within the past five months (January to May), the Railways detected 2.9 lakh suspicious PNRs. This was done while analysing ticket bookings in the first five minutes after it started for both general and Tatkal tickets, The Times of India reported. A Railways official shared that 134 complaints were registered with the national cybercrime portal and they have blocked more than 6,800 disposal email domains. Fraudsters used unique email IDs for every contact or entity. These are usually for a limited number of times. This helps them charge extra money from the passengers. Through the new system, the Railways has been able to mitigate all bot traffic effectively. They typically peaked during the first five minutes of Tatkal bookings. During this period, the bot traffic accounted for up to 50 per cent of the overall login attempts. Notably, the highest-ever per-minute booking of 31,814 tickets was witnessed on May 22, 2025. The latest enhancement will further ensure better accessibility to genuine users and cut down 'bogus' attempts. For fairness and efficiency, the Indian Railways has also come up with new user protocols. Under this, Aadhaar-verified users will be able to book train tickets on the IRCTC website and app without facing any delays; those not authenticated via Aadhaar can book Opening ARP, Tatkal or Premium Tatkal tickets can make bookings only after three days of registration. These efforts have shown measurable improvements in recent times. The average daily user logins was 69.08 lakh in financial year 2023–24 and increased to 82.57 lakh in FY 2024–25, witnessing a 19.53 per cent rise. The average daily ticket bookings jumped by 11.85 per cent during the same period. At present, E-Ticketing accounts for 86.38 per cent of total reserved ticket bookings. With CDN, 87 per cent of static content is being served for faster load times and reduced server load, the Railway Ministry said. The AI algorithms have been able to detect and mitigate bot traffic actively. As there is a "genuine shortage of confirmed tickets," efforts are being made to run more trains to increase capacity, sources told The Times Of India.
