How are tariffs and your 401(k) retirement savings intertwined?
Experts say a rise in tariffs can lead to several factors that impact your retirement savings.
At least $1.7 trillion languishes in lost or forgotten 401(k) accounts, with an average unclaimed balance of $56,616.
Those 29 million idle accounts represent one quarter of all assets held in 401(k) retirement plans.
And those figures come from a 2023 report from Capitalize, a financial services firm. The numbers could be higher now.
'That's a heck of a lot of money,' said James Royal, an investing analyst at Bankrate. 'You could really have tens of thousands of dollars out there.'
It's hard to fathom how anyone could lose track of $56,000, until you stop to consider the circumstances behind the typical lost 401(k) account.
'People who are leaving a job, and especially if they're moving to another one, usually have a bunch of things going on,' said David John, a senior strategic policy adviser at the AARP Public Policy Institute.
The average American born between 1957 and 1964 has changed jobs about a dozen times, AARP reports. A record 47 million Americans quit their jobs in 2021 alone, amid the Great Resignation.
A worker who leaves a job after a year or two might have only a few thousand dollars saved in a retirement account. In the stress of a job change, it's easy to lose track of those funds. Workers might struggle with how to 'roll over' the savings into a new account. The balance might not seem to justify the effort.
Wait a decade or two, however, and the balance in a forgotten account can balloon into a tidy sum. The reason: Most 401(k) funds tend to be invested in stocks, and the market has made enormous gains in recent decades.
'Even 10 or 15 years ago, if you put in $5-, $6-, $7,000, that could be worth three, four or five times as much today,' Royal said.
Tracking down lost 401(k) accounts has never been easier, according to Royal and other retirement-plan experts. A curious consumer with an hour to spare can go a long way toward rooting out lost savings.
Here are some tips, starting with the easy stuff.
Finding a lost 401(k): The low-hanging fruit
First, visit the National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement Benefits. As the name suggests, it's a national database of unclaimed retirement accounts. Enter your Social Security Number, run a quick search and see if any idle accounts come back.
Next, proceed to the Retirement Savings Lost and Found Database. This is a new site, launched by the Department of Labor to help workers locate unclaimed benefits.
The lost and found site is 'still trying to reach scale with a lot of providers' and not yet comprehensive, said Rita Assaf, vice president of retirement savings at Fidelity. But it's another convenient, one-stop destination for finding retirement funds in your name.
Third, visit Missing Money, a clearinghouse of unclaimed property held by U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Another one-stop site, Missing Money can direct users to all sorts of unclaimed property, including retirement accounts.
'It's been around for a few years, but it's not as widely known as it should be,' said John of AARP.
Finding a lost 401(k): Some effort required
The steps above should provide a good sense of potential unclaimed retirement funds in your name. The next moves might take a bit more time.
Search your employment records. Look for old retirement plan statements, in electronic or paper form. Alternately, seek out old pay stubs and W-2 forms, and look for contributions to retirement plans.
Contact old employers, if you can find them. Start with the human resources department. Someone there might know if you participated in a 401(k) or, at a minimum, which company administered the plan.
If you think you know which plan administrator held your account, contact that company directly.
'There are not that many 401(k) plan administrators out there,' said Kate Ashford, a retirement expert at NerdWallet. 'You could take an afternoon and call them all.'
Ask to speak to the 401(k) department. A representative will typically ask for your Social Security Number and other identifying information, which can help the administrator find any old retirement accounts under your name.
If a lost retirement plan is 'from many years ago,' Assaf said, 'that plan may not still be available at Fidelity. It could be somewhere else.'
For retirement accounts with a balance under $1,000, a plan administrator may have liquidated the account and cut a check, which might have gone 'to your last-known address,' Ashford said. For balances in the low thousands, the administrator may have rolled the account into an IRA at another financial institution.
Finding a lost 401(k): Other resources
Several other sites can help consumers search for clues about abandoned retirement accounts.
The Department of Labor's abandoned plan database can help an ex-worker locate a terminated plan.
The same agency allows users to search a database of Form 5500, which is filed annually for 401(k) plans and can help users identify and contact both former employers and plan administrators. But records only go back to 2010.
Don't want to search for lost 401(k) funds yourself? At least two private companies, Capitalize and Beagle, operate concierge services that can do it for you.
Can I have that 401(k) to go?
Fewer 401(k)s will go missing in future, experts say, thanks to the evolving concept of "auto-portability" in retirement plans.
A new initiative in the retirement-savings industry encourages workers to roll over a 401(k) account into an IRA when they leave a job, whereupon the money can automatically transfer to a retirement plan at a new employer.
The auto-portability program applies to accounts valued at $7,000 or less. Research shows low-value accounts are more likely to be cashed out or forgotten, potentially losing thousands of dollars of compounded interest over time.
In 2022, a consortium of private retirement-plan providers announced a collaboration to boost the portability of small retirement accounts.
When someone leaves a job, the network of providers will make sure that any retirement funds 'move seamlessly from one job to another,' said John of AARP.

Trump imposed a similar ban during his first term before withdrawing America unilaterally from Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, under which Iran drastically limited its program in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. When he returned to the White House and began seeking a new deal with Iran, it saw the country's rial currency improve and stocks rise. But worries have grown as its government appears poised to reject an initial American proposal. The travel ban has further darkened that mood and led Iranians to fear Trump will lump the nation's 80 million people with its theocratic government even after he repeatedly praised them while seeking a deal. 'Now I understand that Trump is against all Iranians, and his attitude is not limited to the government,' said Asghar Nejati, a 31-year-old man working in a Tehran pharmacy. Even in the years after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and subsequent U.S. Embassy hostage crisis, Iranian students traveled to the U.S. to attend universities. Between 2018 and 2024, an average of around 10,000 Iranian students went to the U.S. annually. Estimates suggest some 1 million Iranian-origin people live in the U.S. today. Mehrnoush Alipour, a 37-year-old graphic designer, said the nations could have better relations if they could spoke to each other in softer tones. 'This is another foolish decision. Trump cannot reach his goals by imposing pressures on ordinary Iranians," she said. "The two nations can have better relations through openings, not restrictions.' Bank teller Mahdieh Naderi said Trump was lashing out over his frustrated efforts to reach ceasefires in the Israel-Hamas war and the Russia-Ukraine war. 'Trump just expressed his anger about his failed plans,' Naderi said. 'He is complaining about the Chinese and others who are living in the U.S., too Some said interest in the U.S. was already waning before the latest ban. 'Over the past years, two of my grandchildren went to Canada to continue their education there," said Mohammad Ali Niaraki, 75. "Iranians are not limited in immigration and they are not as interested to go to the U.S. as they were decades ago. Iranians prefer Canada, as well as neighboring countries with flourishing economies like the (United Arab) Emirates.' Donald Trump and Elon Musk's friendship is seemingly coming to an end after the tech billionaire pushed back against the US president's divisive One Big Beautiful Bill Act - which he called a "disgusting abomination". Despite public support for one another, Musk's role in Trump's election campaign and his previous (and incredibly controversial) position as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the bromance came crashing down due to the aforementioned bill, which proposes a range of tax cuts and changes to social programs that Musk claims would "burden American citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt". Trump publicly said that he was 'very disappointed with Elon', claiming the former DOGE head 'knew the inner workings' of the Big Beautiful Bill 'better than anybody' and had 'no problem with it' until he realised that the government was 'going to cut the (electric vehicle) mandate'. Musk responded: 'False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!' The increasingly explosive fallout continued with Trump threatening to cut Elon's government contracts, including with Tesla and SpaceX, and claimed that the CEO was "crazy". "Elon was 'wearing thin,' I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. Musk promptly hit back, claiming that the President would have lost the election without his contributions to the campaign. He also agreed with an X user that Trump should be impeached. "Such ingratitude," he added. The came the bombshell X post on Thursday, in which Musk alleged that Trump had shared a long friendship with convicted abuser and sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. 'Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrup is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.' 'Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out,' Musk added in a follow-up post. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed his claims in a statement, saying: "This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted." As to be expected, the entertainment world has been reacting to this swiftly escalating public feud. Among the first people to react to the ongoing feud was Kanye 'Ye' West, who has publicly and controversially aligned himself with Trump and Musk countless times before. 'Broooos please nooooo We love you both so much,' he posted on X. Piers Morgan reacted to Musk's claims that Trump is in the Epstein File with a 'Holy Shit', before offering both men a platform to 'duke this out for a few hours'. 'BBB actually stands for Big Beautiful Breakup,' commented right-wing activist Laura Loomer, while conspiracy theorist Alex Jones wrote: 'God Help Us ALL….' after Musk's accusation. Steve Bannon, a right-wing activist who has opposed Musk's role in the government, took things up a notch by telling the New York Times that Musk should be 'deported' and that the government should 'initiate a formal investigation of his immigration status.' Elsewhere, popular politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez offered her take when asked about the feud: 'Oh man, the girls are fighting, aren't they?' Democratic Senator Adam Schiff joked on X: 'Going to need a Big Beautiful Bucket of popcorn for this ugly brawl.' Comedian, writer and TV host Jon Stewart wrote: 'Good thing Trump didn't willfully hand over the entirety of our country's operating system to Elon and his… oops.' As for celebrated musician Jack White, who has consistently been critical of both Trump and Musk – he wrote in response to Kanye West's post: '3 fucking nazi clowns collapsing under the weight of their own unchecked egos. It's hard to fathom in a proposal that includes billions upon billions of dollars in tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, but one of the most significant changes included in the massive budget bill approved by the U.S. House late last month was this: big cuts to the nation's main anti-hunger program. Under the legislation, millions of people would lose SNAP food assistance benefits. Meanwhile, states would be saddled with 14 billion dollars in new costs. And the impacts will be felt in the stomachs of families across the nation. As Raleigh-area Congresswoman Deborah Ross explained last week, in her district – one of the state's more affluent ones – 20,000 of her adult constituents will lose all of their SNAP benefits. Statewide, a total of almost half a million people will lose benefits and the cuts will ripple through grocery stores and the economy as a whole. The bottom line: Rep. Ross is right. The Republican budget will cause irreparable harm to the people of our state. All caring and thinking North Carolinians should support her effort to push back. For NC Newsline, I'm Rob Schofield.
