Cricket Returns To Asian Games In 2026, Set For T20 Format In Japan

News1830-04-2025

'The latest development in the compilation of the sports programm came at the 41st meeting of the AINAGOC Board of Directors at Nagoya City Hall on Monday, April 28, when cricket and Mixed Martial Arts were both formally approved," the OCA said.
Cricket matches will be played in the T20 format and hosted in Aichi prefecture, although the exact venues are yet to be finalised.
'The venue for cricket will be in Aichi prefecture but the exact location has not been decided. Interest will be high, not only because of cricket's popularity in South Asia in particular but also because the T20 (20 overs per side) format will be included in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028," the OCA said.
'This will be cricket's first appearance in the Olympics since 1900 in Paris, where Great Britain beat France by 158 runs in the final of the two-team tournament.
Cricket will be among 41 sports featured at the Games, which are expected to see participation from 15,000 athletes and officials representing the OCA's 45 National Olympic Committees.
This will be the fourth time cricket features in the Asian Games, following its inclusion in Guangzhou (2010), Incheon (2014), and Hangzhou (2023). The Indian men's and women's teams are the defending champions.
Cricket will also feature in 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. It will be cricket's first appearance in the Olympics since 1900 in Paris, where Great Britain beat France by 158 runs in the final of the two-team tournament.
The OCA also confirmed that a 'floating Athletes' Village" — a cruise ship docked in Nagoya Port – will accommodate 4,600 athletes and officials.

Shooting World Cup: Suruchi enters 10m air pistol final

Suruchi Inder Singh stormed into the final of 10m Air Pistol women at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shooting World Cup (rifle/pistol), while Paris Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker missed out to make the cut here on Friday. Suruchi scored 588 with 20 inner 10s to be placed second in the qualification, behind Yao Qianxun of China, who topped the qualification chart with Qualification World Record Junior of 589 - 21x. Meanwhile, Manu failed to make the final after finishing 25th after shooting 574 - 14x, while another Indian in the fray, Palak, finished 36th with 570 - 18x. Interestingly, Suruchi had pipped Manu in the women's 10m air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup 2025 Lima in Peru to win the gold in April this year. Suruchi shot a total of 243.6 in the final to beat compatriot Manu, a two-time Olympic medallist who shot 242.3 to grab the silver. This was Suruchi's second successive gold in the women's 10m air pistol event at ISSF World Cups this year. The 19-year-old from Jhajjar in Haryana won the gold medal in Buenos Aires in early April to mark her maiden podium finish at a senior World Cup. Meanwhile, Manu's silver medal in Peru was her first since striking a double bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She had returned empty-handed from Buenos Aires. However, in Munich, another Indian, Sainyam, who was competing for the Ranking Points Only (RPO) shot 580 - 23x. Earlier, double Paris Olympics bronze medallist Manu finished sixth in the women's 25m pistol final. Olympian Elavenil Valarivan had opened India's medal count after winning bronze in the women's 10m air rifle on Day One. Then, Indian shooting sensation Sift Kaur Samra added yet another accolade to her growing list of international achievements, securing a bronze medal in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event

'Sir David': Beckham Knighted For Services To Football And Charity

Last Updated: England and Manchester United legend Beckham was named in the King Charles' Birthday Honours list on Saturday. David Beckham was knighted for his services to the game of football and his activities towards charity as the 50-year-old was named in the King Charles' Birthday Honours list on Saturday. Beckham, who earned 115 international caps for the England national team, is set to join other renowned figures in British sporting history, such as former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and tennis legend Andy Murray. In 2003, Beckham was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), and his wife, former Spice Girls star Victoria, received the same honour for her contributions to the fashion industry. Since 2005, Beckham has served as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador and is also involved with the King's Foundation, supporting educational initiatives to raise awareness among the next generation about nature. The former Manchester United star was initially set to receive the high honour in 2012 for his efforts in bringing the Olympics to the United Kingdom, but the nomination was put on hold due to alleged tax evasion charges that were eventually dropped. Beckham made over 700 appearances in a distinguished career, known for his exceptional free-kick skills and precise long passes. He won the Premier League title six times and a UEFA Champions League trophy during his time at Manchester United under Ferguson. However, in 2003, Beckham transferred to Spanish giants Real Madrid following a disagreement with Ferguson. He remained with the Galacticos until 2007 before moving to the USA to play for LA Galaxy. Beckham also spent a couple of seasons on loan at Serie A club AC Milan before finishing his illustrious career at French side PSG, where he retired with 127 goals across all competitions. In 2014, Beckham announced his intention to exercise the option of buying an MLS expansion team, Inter Miami. He has significantly advanced the development of the Florida-based club, attracting star players like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. Jarkhar, mecca of rural sports, keeps torch burning

Ludhiana: As the 15th Olympian Prithipal Singh Hockey Championship concluded at Jarkhar on June 8, the passion for sports in the village was palpable, showing how far it has come as a 'mecca of rural sports'. Jarkhar lies about 15km from the city, on Ludhiana-Malerkotla road. Jarkhar Sports Festival and other tournaments held in the village have become the most anticipated events here. No wonder, they are often referred to as 'modern rural mini Olympics'. Since its inception in 1986, this vibrant festival has grown from a modest local event into a cornerstone of rural sports and cultural celebration, fostering community spirit, sportsmanship, and the preservation of traditional games. Held at the state-of-the-art Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Complex, the festival attracts participants and spectators, blending athletic prowess with Punjabi cultural vibrancy. The festival's history traces back to a small playground and a budget of just Rs 1,200 initiated by the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports and Charitable Trust. Over nearly four decades, it has evolved into a spectacle, drawing athletes from neighbouring villages, districts, and even international teams. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo A pivotal moment in the festival's history came with the establishment of the Jarkhar Hockey Academy in April 2006, spearheaded by chief organiser Jagroop Singh Jarkhar. The event's growth is reflected in its modern venue, over Rs 6 crore stadium equipped with floodlights, a blue astroturf surface, and facilities including a hostel, 34 rooms, facility to host multiple sports simultaneously. These include hockey, kabaddi, wrestling, football, basketball, handball, volleyball, and athletics. Jarkhar said, "At present, about 120 aspiring hockey players are being coached and 30 to 40 players are staying in the hostel. The focus remains on hockey, but a boxing academy was also started in 2021." The festival's impact extends beyond athletics, serving as a cultural hub that celebrates Punjab's rich heritage. The academy has become a beacon of opportunity for underprivileged youth. Jarkhar said several academy players have participated in various-level competitions, securing stable employment, highlighting the role of the festival and the academy in transforming lives through sports. "Over 400 players from the academy have already played at the national level and have secured jobs in various departments including Punjab Police, the Railways, etc under the sports quota. More than 50 players are playing in different leagues abroad and nearly 100 players are making a living from the sport," he added. Jarkhar said, "Of the Rs 6-7 crore invested in the complex, only Rs 20-30 lakh has come from the govt. We could manage the rest because of the strong community support." He added, "We have dedicated our lives to it, Nowhere in Punjab will you find such infrastructure. This is the first stadium in the state to have floodlights, that too in rural areas, and they are lit every evening when players play and practice. It has a hostel, 34 rooms, bus service, boarding lodging, and food facilities." The academy is also recognised by Hockey India . Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
