Cricket Returns To Asian Games In 2026, Set For T20 Format In Japan
Cricket matches will be played in the T20 format and hosted in Aichi prefecture, although the exact venues are yet to be finalised.
'The venue for cricket will be in Aichi prefecture but the exact location has not been decided. Interest will be high, not only because of cricket's popularity in South Asia in particular but also because the T20 (20 overs per side) format will be included in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028," the OCA said.
'This will be cricket's first appearance in the Olympics since 1900 in Paris, where Great Britain beat France by 158 runs in the final of the two-team tournament.
Cricket will be among 41 sports featured at the Games, which are expected to see participation from 15,000 athletes and officials representing the OCA's 45 National Olympic Committees.
This will be the fourth time cricket features in the Asian Games, following its inclusion in Guangzhou (2010), Incheon (2014), and Hangzhou (2023). The Indian men's and women's teams are the defending champions.
Cricket will also feature in 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. It will be cricket's first appearance in the Olympics since 1900 in Paris, where Great Britain beat France by 158 runs in the final of the two-team tournament.
The OCA also confirmed that a 'floating Athletes' Village" — a cruise ship docked in Nagoya Port – will accommodate 4,600 athletes and officials.

Incumbent Ajay Singh was on Thursday (August 21, 2025) re-elected President of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) for a third consecutive term after a comprehensive victory over Olympian Jaslal Pradhan, even as the Sports Ministry and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chose not to send observers for the long-delayed polls. That gives us immense satisfaction... that Indian boxers are now getting the opportunity to box in international championships and that they win so many medals and India gets to shine on the world stage. "We want to continue that work and ensure that our boxers get many more opportunities and get to bring Olympic medals for the country," he added. Singh will be joined by new secretary general Pramod Kumar of Uttar Pradesh, who edged out former BFI treasurer Digvijay Singh of Madhya Pradesh 36–30. Kumar succeeds Assam's Hemanta Kalita, who was ineligible to contest after completing two consecutive four-year terms and is now serving a mandatory cooling-off period. The treasurer's position saw a three-way fight and Tamil Nadu's Pon Baskaran secured the post with 28 votes, defeating Anil Kumar Bohidar and R. Gopu. "We have already told the Delhi High Court that we do not think that the procedure followed in the conduct of these elections is right. We will wait now and see what the court says," a Ministry source said. The results of the polls remain subject to the final verdict of an ongoing case in the Delhi High Court, where several state units have challenged the constitutional amendments introduced by the interim committee that had been overseeing BFI's daily affairs. The High Court has set September 23 as the next date of hearing. "Of course the matter is going on in the court and the court had said in its last hearing that they wanted the elections to go on. "They also made the result of the elections subject to the final outcome of the case which is what happens every time a legal matter is filed in an election. So all of us will abide by the law of the land," Singh said. Singh, who was first elected to office in 2016, said his priority would be to focus on grassroots development. "My foremost commitment is to ensure that every ounce of energy now goes into strengthening grassroots programs, empowering our junior and youth athletes, and building on India's growing stature in world boxing." The elections were initially scheduled for March 28 but were repeatedly stalled due to a series of petitions, appeals and counter-appeals.

Srinagar's Dal Lake hosts first-ever Khelo India water games with eyes on talent for Olympics
The picturesque and iconic Dal Lake in Srinagar on Thursday (August 21, 2025) hosted the first-ever races under rowing, kayaking, and canoeing categories under the Khelo India Water Sports Festival, with an eye on improving the rank in water sports at the Olympics in the coming years. At least 409 athletes from 36 States and Union Territories (U.T.s) are participating in the water sports events, competing for 24 gold medals over the next three days. Of the 409 participants, 202 are female athletes. Madhya Pradesh has sent the largest contingent of 44 athletes, followed by Haryana (37), Odisha (34), and Kerala (33). 'The waters of the Dal Lake offer the same setting as in Europe. It's going to unmask talent in J&K as well as across the country. Water sports have 16 medals in the Olympics and remain the key to bettering our ranks at the international platform,' Bilquis Mir, who became India's first jury member in the Olympics in 2025, said. India ranked 71st at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Khelo India Water Sports Festival 2025 is also the first consolidated open-age category championship, where all 14 kayaking and canoeing events and the 10 rowing events are Olympic events. Ms. Mir, the Competition Director for the first Khelo India Water Sports Games, termed the holding of the water games in Srinagar as a shot in the arm for local athletes. 'The event will boost water sports in Kashmir and provide a platform to local talent,' Ms. Mir said. On day one, Mohsin Ali, a local, won gold in the 1,000-metre canoe race. 'I started water sports in 2017, preparing and have been eyeing to win gold. I attended a 20-day special camp under Ms. Mir for the event. My hard practice has earned me the prize,' Mr. Ali said. Balaji Maradapa, president of the Rowing Federation of India, said the venue chosen for the Khelo India Water Sports is the best thing to happen for local athletes in Kashmir. 'I have been tracking the athletes of Kashmir for many years. They are nice and have a big make. With proper training, local athletes have the potential to top rowing and kayaking in India,' Mr. Maradapa said. Olympian Arjun Lal Jat, who represented India in 2020 and won a silver medal in the 2023 Asian Games, also sees unattended potential in Kashmir. 'In the coming years, Kashmiri athletes will make it big,' Mr. Jat said. With athletes coming from Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Kerala, and other States, Ms. Mir said, 'The course has been prepared keeping all international specifications in mind.' The Khelo India Water Sports Festival is a new addition along the lines of the Khelo India Beach Games held in Diu in May this year. Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, said, 'The government is committed to providing world-class facilities, training, and platforms like Khelo India to empower athletes nationwide.' J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said water sports and Dal Lake share a special bond. 'Through Khelo India Water Sports, this bond has been given a new colour. You may have heard it many times, but it is true, winning is not everything; participation is most important. We hope we are able to host you well.' Meanwhile, Ms. Mir said the three-day event will also boost tourism. 'These sportsmen will become ambassadors to the rest of the country,' she said.
