How a pendant could get Suresh Gopi into jaws of law

India Today24-07-2025
Union Minister and veteran actor Suresh Gopi is under legal scrutiny after he was seen wearing a necklace allegedly with a leopard-tooth pendant, a potential violation of the Wildlife Protection Act. The Kerala Forest Department launched a probe into the matter after a Youth Congress leader, AA Muhammad Hashim, lodged a complaint with it.Possession of a leopard tooth, a violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, can attract a jail term of three to seven years along with a fine.advertisementHashim, who filed the complaint with the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Thrissur in June, which was forwarded to the Pattikkad Range Forest Officer, demanded the confiscation of the alleged pendant and a scientific analysis to verify whether the ornament indeed contained a real leopard tooth.
In his complaint, Hashim had stated that he had seen TV visuals of Gopi wearing the ornament at two functions, one in Thrissur and another in KannurThe Pattikkad Range Forest Officer had summoned Hashim to record his statements. The complainant, who is also an office-bearer of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), sought the confiscation of the pendent as he recorded his statement with Kerala's forest officials on Monday, July 21, reported The Hindu newspaper.Hashim also urged authorities to verify when the ornament worn by the actor was created, apprehending that the ornament could be "manipulated", according to the report. To bolster the investigation, the complainant provided media footage from TV channels showing Gopi wearing the ornament alleged to be made of leopard tooth and requested access to original videos to verify the authenticity of the visuals.SERIOUS DERELICTION OF DUTY: HASIM IN COMPALINT AGAINST SURESH GOPIHashim contended that Gopi's actions were a clear violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. In the complaint, the Congress functionary argued that Gopi, the Minister of State Petroleum and Natural Gas in the Union Cabinet, must explain the origin of the alleged leopard tooth necklace, according to a report in a Kozhikode-based news outlet, Mathrubhumi. He argued that someone sworn to uphold the law cannot be seen flouting it, calling the act a serious breach of constitutional duty. The Pattikkad Range Forest Officer, after issuing a notice to the complainant to appear before him to record his statement, said that any further steps in connection with the complaint would be taken after verifying the complainant's statement and any documents or evidence he gives, reported news agency PTI.SURESH GOPI LIKELY TO BE SUMMONED: REPORTFollowing the registration of the complainant's statement, The Hindu report added, the Kerala Forest department will issue a notice to Gopi asking him to produce the pendant and appear before the Divisional Forest Officer, Thrissur, for an enquiry.advertisementThe Lok Sabha MP will be asked to explain the nature and source of the pendant.Forest authorities will also examine whether the pendant allegedly worn by the BJP MP is an actual wildlife trophy or a synthetic replica. The forest department considers Suresh Gopi's in-person appearance crucial, as only he can provide direct information about the pendant in question, according to the report. He will also have the option of filing a written statement to the questions raised by the enquiry officer. The future course of action will be decided after obtaining his statement, a highly-placed Forest Department source told The Hindu.PICTURE OF GOPI WEARING ALLEGED LEOPARD PENDENT WENT VIRALThe complaint was filed after the Kerala Forest Department in April arrested Malayalam rapper Vedan (Hirandas Murali) for allegedly wearing a leopard tooth pendant. The incident reignited attention to previous controversies involving celebrities and wildlife items — notably, actor Mohanlal's long-standing case involving elephant tusks, and the recent visuals of Gopi wearing a pendant resembling a leopard tooth.A picture of Gopi wearing the alleged pendant resembling a leopard tooth went viral on social media after the Malayalam singer's arrest.advertisementHashim told the Hyderabad-based news outlet South First that after Gopi was seen wearing the alleged pendant during his visit to a temple in Kannur in June, he later appeared at a public event in Thrissur wearing it again."Visual evidence has already been submitted to the state police chief," Hashim told the outlet.WHAT WILDLIFE PROTECTION ACT SAYS ABOUT ANIMAL TROPHIESThe Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 states that only individuals with a valid certificate of ownership are permitted, after the Act's commencement, to acquire, receive, or possess any captive animal, animal article, trophy, or uncured trophy listed under Schedule I or Part II of Schedule II, unless it is inherited. As per the Act, possessing a leopard tooth may attract a jail term of between three and seven years and a fine."The minister has not responded to the complaint. We have not received any request from the police or the Forest Department," Gopi's assistant told the South First in a report published on April 30.Personally, the minister is yet to respond to the allegations.- EndsMust Watch

At 3rd edition of Meghalaya Pineapple Festival in Delhi, MoUs signed with Reliance, Amazon units

The third edition of the Meghalaya Pineapple Festival was inaugurated on Friday at the Dilli Haat in New Delhi. Organised by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, the festival aims to position the state's agricultural growth story in the national spotlight. The event was inaugurated by Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the presence of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, along with senior officials from both the central and state governments. A key highlight of the event was the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) by the Government of Meghalaya with Reliance Fresh, Amazon Karigar, and Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters. These agreements are expected to scale up procurement, visibility, and national distribution of Meghalaya's agricultural products. 'The products of Meghalaya are almost fully organic. By marketing them well and adding value, you have shown, for the third year, that Meghalaya's products are truly special. Jackfruit, fruits, coffee, pineapple, mushrooms—everything is amazing,' said Chouhan. He added: 'Today, the air in Delhi feels filled with the fragrance of Meghalaya. The breeze, the atmosphere — everything is touched by the flavour of Meghalaya's pineapples. I already knew that Meghalaya produces very good pineapples. But after tasting them today, I couldn't stop eating! I have never tasted pineapples so juicy and sweet before. This sweetness in taste belongs to the soil of Meghalaya.' The Union Minister also commended the efforts of the Meghalaya Government and congratulated the farmers and the Chief Minister. 'On behalf of the Government of India, I assure you, Chief Minister ji, whenever Meghalaya calls, the Government of India and the Agriculture Ministry will always stand with you,' he said, while encouraging Delhi residents to visit the festival and experience the taste of Meghalaya's produce. The event also included the unveiling of Meghalaya's achievements in the agriculture sector, aligning with its Vision@2032 plan to transform the state into a $16 billion economy. The strategy outlines a five-year plan to enhance farm infrastructure, encourage crop diversification, improve processing and logistics, and raise farmers' incomes through market-based initiatives. 'This is the third edition of Meghalaya Pineapple Festival, and we are very happy that every year this is becoming bigger and better. More importantly, our farmers are getting the necessary exposure and the network they require and they truly deserve,' said Sangma. Briefing the Union Minister, Sangma shared: 'Our state produces around 1.5 lakh metric tonnes of pineapples every year, and a large share of this is consumed within the Northeast itself. Over the past few years, we have set up various fruit processing units to enable value addition—not just for pineapples, but also for turmeric, black pepper, and other produce, with the goal of meeting international packaging and quality standards. Our aim is to establish one such unit in each of the 55 blocks of the state, catering to the prominent value chains in the block.' He further added: 'The MoUs we have signed today will provide crucial logistics support and help distribute our products across the country. This initiative is not limited to Meghalaya alone—we want to connect fresh produce from across the Northeast to national and international markets.' Over the past three years, Meghalaya has developed more than 27 cold storages, eight processing hubs and logistics facilities, including mobile units and refrigerated trucks. In 2024, over 682 metric tonne of processed pineapples were exported to the EU, Gulf countries, and Southeast Asia. Additionally, more than 150 metric tonne were sold domestically in Indian metros through institutional partnerships. The Meghalaya Pineapple Festival 2025 features curated stalls from multiple farmer cooperatives, live tastings, value-added products, B2B networking, and cultural performances. Musicians from the Garo, Khasi, and Jaintia Hills, under the Chief Minister's Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (CM-MGMP), will perform at Dilli Haat and India Gate during all three days of the event. A short film titled 'Meghalaya Agriculture & Horticulture' was also screened during the event to highlight the state's initiatives. The festival is open to the public daily from 11 AM to 8:45 PM until August 3 at Dilli Haat, INA. Entry is free.

India rejects UK parliamentary panel's report on ‘transnational repression'

New Delhi on Friday rejected a British parliamentary panel's report that named India among countries engaging in 'transnational repression' in the UK, with the external affairs ministry saying the allegations stemmed from 'dubious sources.' The report by the British Parliament's Joint Committee on Human Rights, titled 'Transnational repression in the UK', was published on July 30 (UK Parliament) 'We have seen the references to India in the report and categorically reject these baseless allegations,' external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. 'These claims stem from unverified and dubious sources, predominantly linked to proscribed entities and individuals with a clear, documented history of anti-India hostility. The deliberate reliance on discredited sources calls into question the credibility of the report itself,' he said. The report by the British Parliament's Joint Committee on Human Rights, titled 'Transnational repression in the UK', was published on July 30. Citing 'multiple evidence submissions', the report listed India along with Bahrain, China, Egypt, Eritrea, Iran, Pakistan, Russia, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates as countries allegedly engaging in transnational repression in the UK. The evidence related to India cited in the report was provided by Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a pro-Khalistan organisation banned in India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and other UK-based Sikh groups. The report also cited allegations of India misusing Interpol's system of issuing Red Notices for fugitives for political reasons.

Four held in ₹3 crore trade investment scam in Hyderabad

Four persons were arrested by the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) for their involvement in a fraudulent trade investment scheme, in which a Hyderabad-based man was duped into transferring ₹3 crore. The accused were identified as Srinivas Manubothula (45), Syed Yousuf (45), Chekka Yeshaya alias Shekar (54) and Mohammed Jaber Ahmed (42). One of them was a bank account holder, while the other three acted as agents in facilitating the fraud. The case was booked following a complaint on June 28 by a resident of North Lallaguda, who alleged that he was added to a WhatsApp group called 'SMC Global Securities', purportedly run by a woman named Anu Prita Daga and Ajay Garg, presented as the CEO of SMC Global Securities Ltd, New Delhi. The complainant was lured into joining an investment scheme through a web link sent by Daga. Claiming that SEBI-approved cash management accounts were used, she promised that funds transferred by investors would be securely credited and could be withdrawn at any time. Encouraged to invest in an IPO for a fictitious firm named 'Influx Health Tech Ltd', the victim was told that he had been allocated shares worth ₹49 crore. After he protested, stating he did not authorise such an amount, the fraudsters negotiated a revised payment of ₹3 crore. The funds were transferred to 16 bank accounts provided by Daga, including one in Kerala where ₹77 lakh was deposited. Investigations revealed that ₹8 lakh from the Kerala account was later transferred to the bank account of Srinivas Manubothula, a software consultant. Manubothula, who ran a drone software firm under the name 'Drones Spray', had opened a current account with Axis Bank. Facing financial distress, he agreed to provide this account for use in cyber frauds, for a commission. His associates, including Jaber Ahmed and Syed Yousuf, facilitated the scam by transporting the SIM card linked to the bank account to Mumbai, where other fraudsters managed the transfers. Manubothula received ₹2 lakh for allowing the use of his account, which saw a total inflow of ₹4.3 crore, later redistributed to various accounts via net banking. The police said that as many as 46 NCRP (National Cybercrime Reporting Portal) complaints have been filed against the same bank account from across India. The TGCSB has issued a public advisory warning citizens not to provide their bank accounts for use by others under any circumstance. It also urged people to stay vigilant against fraudulent investment schemes and to report any suspicious activity via the 1930 helpline or
