Intoxicated worker involved in multiple collisions, arrested in Verulam

IOL News3 days ago

An intoxicated municipality employee's erratic driving culminated in a dramatic series of events in Temple Valley, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday afternoon. The incident began around 17:43 when a concerned motorist reached out to the Operations Centre for assistance after witnessing a hit-and-run involving a white Toyota Hilux bakkie and his own silver Hyundai i10 on Ireland Street, Verulam CBD.
The motorist detailed how the Toyota Hilux, driven by a 32-year-old male, initially stopped after the collision but fled when quizzed about his sobriety. Demonstrating alarming recklessness, the driver sped off, prompting the motorist to follow the bakkie while reporting the situation to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) for help.
As RUSA officers raced to locate the vehicle, the intoxicated driver continued to navigate the streets erratically, eventually colliding with a RUSA response vehicle — a white Toyota Fortuner — after failing to stop at a stop street in Temple Valley. Undeterred, the driver attempted yet again to escape, but was swiftly boxed in by backup officers who had arrived on the scene.
According to RUSA, upon apprehension, the driver identified himself as a plumber employed by the eThekwini Water & Sanitation Department and revealed that the bakkie was a municipal vehicle. Fortunately, the RUSA officer involved in the collision was unharmed. The intoxicated driver was subsequently arrested and handed over to the Verulam SAPS for further investigation.
This alarming incident raises significant concerns regarding road safety and the responsibility of public employees while operating municipal vehicles. Authorities are expected to investigate further, ensuring accountability for those who endanger the lives of others while under the influence.

Hijacking hotspots in Pretoria exposed: Avoid these areas

Hijackings in Pretoria are surging, with Mamelodi East, Akasia, and Sunnyside emerging as the city's most dangerous hotspots. Hijackers are zeroing in on Pretoria, with Mamelodi East, Akasia, and Olievenhoutbosch ranking among the country's most dangerous precincts for carjackings. According to the latest crime statistics released by SAPS for the period January to March 2025, these Tshwane-based stations recorded some of the highest hijacking figures nationwide—Mamelodi East with 65 cases, Akasia with 58, and Olievenhoutbosch with 51. These numbers place all three precincts in the national top 30 for aggravated robberies, highlighting a worrying trend for motorists in the capital. While Gauteng recorded a general decline in carjackings, Tshwane remains a key target area, with criminals favouring high-traffic routes, driveways, and intersections to strike. Here are the hot spots: Mamelodi East – 65 cases Akasia – 58 cases Olievenhoutbosch – 51 cases Sunnyside – High risk zone (frequently listed in trio crime stats) Pretoria West – Noteworthy activity linked to aggravated robberies Mamelodi West – Not in the top 30 but consistently flagged in past stats Temba – Previously listed among high-risk stations for violent crimes. Eersterust and Garsfontein – Not top-ranked but noted for related robbery and theft activity Residents are urged to remain vigilant, especially during the early morning and evening hours, when most of these incidents typically occur. Meanwhile, Paul Visser from the Pretoria ICE Community Network said here are the most targeted vehicles in the country now: VW Polo Toyota Hilux Ford Ranger Toyota Corolla Cross Toyota Fortuner Haval Jolion Chery Tiggo 4 Pro Haval H6 Chery Tiggo 7 Pro These models are often targeted due to their resale value, parts demand, and, increasingly, use in cross-border vehicle smuggling syndicates. KZN siblings shot dead while sleeping in bed

Two KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) siblings were fatally shot while sleeping in bed at their home in Intaphuka, Ndwedwe, on Thursday, 29 May 2025. The two brothers, aged 26 and 29, were found unresponsive in their shared bed. According to Reaction Unit South Africa, three suspects forcefully entered the residence of the victims. The suspects shot both victims and stole their phones before fleeing the scene. Speaking to The South African, RUSA spokesperson said that the suspects have not been apprehended, and investigations are ongoing. In other news, suspects broke into a high school in Inhlabamkhosi and stole computers and projectors 'Two projectors were recovered abandoned. It is believed that the suspects involved were also linked to the double murder (of the siblings), but this could not be immediately confirmed,' said RUSA. A 17-year-old girl was found dead inside a locked shack in Kinross after she went missing on 23 May 2025. Police received a request to search a residence believed to be associated with the victim's stepfather. Upon arriving at the shack, police found the doors and burglar gates locked. They forcefully entered the shack and found the naked body of a young female in a semi-decomposed state, believed to be the missing teenager. 'She was lying on a bed covered with blankets, [and] her legs were open. The victim had visible head injuries, including a deep wound and a crushed forehead. It is suspected that she was raped before being killed,' the police said. Additionally, a bloodstained pipe wrench was found next to the bed and was allegedly used in carrying out the murder. Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim argued with her stepfather after he wanted to sell the shack that once belonged to her late mother. 'The teenager had reportedly objected, expressing concern for her younger siblings, who would need a place to stay in the future,' the police statement read. Investigations link the stepfather to the murder of the victim. He is also in police custody for allegedly being involved in murdering his 34-year-old girlfriend on the same day the victim went missing. He is now a suspect in both murders.
