
How US-owned clubs have learnt to win 20 years after Glazers' arrival at Man Utd
Next season's Premier League will feature 13 clubs with an American shareholder and after dominant season across top three tiers, the "Thanks but no yanks" era has become ancient history
It is 20 years on from the Glazers' controversial arrival in Manchester and 15 since the 'Thanks but no yanks' campaign at Liverpool.
But now US-backed clubs are coming off the back of an unprecedented season. For American owners, success was always going to shrink the stigma.
The top two in the Premier League, Championship and League One were all at least part-backed by Americans. So too FA Cup winners Crystal Palace, while Chelsea last week secured a first bit of silverware for their great disruptors from across the Atlantic.
But with 65 per cent of next season's Premier League clubs owned by them and the domino effect extending to more than a quarter of clubs in the EFL, is it the law of averages or have several cracked the code?
'I don't know if it's causation or correlation,' says New York-based David Gandler, the latest arrival having recently completed a majority takeover of Leyton Orient, who then lost the third-tier play-off final to another US-financed team in Charlton.
'But you can see, in the UK, football is life, religion and tradition. It's very difficult not to get caught up in the excitement. That's the draw here.'
That is a feeling shared by Tom Wagner's Knighthead Capital group at Birmingham, which also includes NFL legend Tom Brady, and Wrexham's Hollywood heroes Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – League One's top two.
Both have concertedly bedded into the communities that sustain their clubs – perhaps realising from the missteps of those who have gone before.
Earlier this season Wagner told the Wall Street Journal that the success is down to 'a set of professional sports owners that are taking a very intentional approach to building businesses.'
But another factor for those operating down the pyramid is that, beyond the super rich, they have been priced out of purchasing teams in closed shop leagues at home.
Even for those succeeding there are still tension points off the pitch – not least around the so-called matchday experience and sharp-rising ticket prices at several clubs.
But for those flying high on the grass there are some commonalities. Arsenal and Liverpool are harvesting the rewards of being among the first to embrace data.
And it is no coincidence that their owners have tentacles planted deep in American sports where those analytical models originated.
Crucially they have developed a structure of experts to separate the signal from the noise. As former midfielder Joe Cole said, when evaluating the Clearlake Capital-Todd Boehly stewardship of Chelsea, 'the best approach is data-driven, expert-led.'
Another theory is that those with pre-existing backgrounds in American sports that have long worked with salary caps and luxury taxes have been better at adapting to the now more strictly-applied financial fair play rules.
Triumphing on the pitch, however, is yet to translate into making many of these clubs profitable.
Before sealing a third consecutive promotion, Reynolds described investing in Wrexham as 'like lighting money on fire except it doesn't keep you warm.'
Which means a crunch point will come. The vast majority are here to make money, whether by taking over distressed assets in the lower leagues and building them up or finding new revenue streams at established giants such as Chelsea.
'For some it's just diversification of portfolio, for others it's the allure of sport,' Gandler adds. 'But everyone thinks they can win and that's contagious.'

Another 'Taco' trade? Investors shrug off latest Trump tariff blow
Investors largely shrugged off the latest blow to global trade from Donald Trump's White House on Wednesday as brokers upgraded expectations for stock markets this year. The US went ahead with an increase in tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, which doubled to 50 per cent from the 25 per cent level announced in March. US officials told trading partners to make 'best offers' to avoid further punishing levies that come into effect in March. UK exporters avoided the hike though, as both both sides work out duties and quotas in line with the terms of their trade pact announced last month. However, with a full deal with the US not yet in sight, British exporters will continue to face the 25 per cent levy. George Holmes, managing director of Aurora Capital, described the last minute exemption as a 'massive relief to UK manufacturers', but warned the reprieve remains 'precarious'. He said: 'Until the US-UK Economic Prosperity Agreement is finalised and implemented, the very real threat of the policy being reversed remains. Firms in sectors like steel, engineering, and automotive need stability, clarity, and confidence to invest. 'The government must move quickly to lock in the long-term deal, communicate clearly with industry, and help businesses make the most of this window of opportunity.' Nevertheless, the FTSE 100 inched 0.2 per cent higher by late morning, led by miners and defence and aerospace companies. The FTSE 250 added 0.4 per cent, lifted by strong trading updates from DiscoverIE Group and fund manager Ninety One. Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said the move is 'perhaps a signal that markets have moved on from reacting to every new development'. London-listed stocks trailed strong gains in Asia, which were propelled by the victory of liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung in the South Korean presidential election, while European stocks were up by around 0.5 per cent. The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones looked set to open 0.2 per cent higher later in the day. It came as Barclays raised its year-end price target for the S&P 500 to 6,050 from 5,900, citing easing trade uncertainty and expectations of normalised earnings growth in 2026. Barclays followed similar moves by Goldman Sachs and UBS Global Wealth Management in May, and RBC Capital Markets and Deutsche Bank earlier this week. The bank's new target is an upside of about 1.32 per cent to the index's last close of 5,970.37 points. Treasury yields continued to inch higher, while pressure eased on the dollar. Francesco Pesole, FX strategist at ING, said: 'Markets may also be adopting a slightly more optimistic stance on US-China trade tensions ahead of the scheduled Trump-Xi call this week. 'Recently, such direct talks have eased trade pressures, and in our view, there is potential for a temporary uptick in the dollar after the event. Still, this may not trigger a sustained rally.' Neil Wilson, UK investor strategist at Saxo Markets, said: 'Markets seem content to see the glass half full for now. The G7 summit in Canada kicks off in 11 days. 'The White House has pushed for countries to submit their best and final offers by we see an announcement from Trump if he doesn't get what he wants? There is scope for another hit-and-TACO move here.'

Coco Gauff scraps past Madison Keys to reach French Open semi-finals
Coco Gauff passed her biggest test so far at the French Open as she scrapped her way past fellow American Madison Keys to reach the semi-finals. A scruffy match featuring a combined 101 unforced errors and 14 breaks of serve ended 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-1 in favour of the world No 2. Gauff had previously not dropped a set as she quietly made her way through the friendlier side of the draw. But in a nervy first set on both sides of the net, Gauff overturned a 4-1 deficit to force a set point at 5-4, only to be taken to a tie-break which Keys won. Gauff went 4-1 up in the second but found herself pegged back, before a break and a hold took the match into a decider. The confidence had drained from Keys, the Australian Open champion, while Gauff finally located her serve, having coughed up nine double faults over the first two sets. A pass down the line brought up three match points and the 21-year-old roared with delight when Keys went long, giving her the victory in two hours and 11 minutes. 'Maddie was playing well, she's hitting the ball so fast and so low so I was just trying to fight for each point,' said Gauff, the runner-up at Roland Garros in 2022. 'I knew I had to be able to run today and as soon as the ball came short, punish her for it. 'It means a lot, getting through this tough match. I'm very happy to get through and be in the semi-finals again. I'll savour this one today and be ready for tomorrow's match.' Blunder fest as Gauff downs Keys to reach last four in Paris
PARIS, June 4 (Reuters) - Coco Gauff huffed and puffed into the French Open semi-finals with a 6-7(6) 6-4 6-1 victory against fellow American Madison Keys in a match both players will be quick to forget as they broke the 100-unforced errors barrier on Wednesday. More than half of Gauff's points came from Australian Open champion Keys' soft mistakes and the world number two got away with a total of 10 double faults. The 21-year-old will need to make dramatic adjustments when she faces either France's Lois Boisson or Russian sixth seed Mirra Andreeva for a place in Sunday's final. Keys, who was looking to reach the last four at Roland Garros for the second time after 2018, bowed out with her 60th unforced error to end a forgettable contest. "I'm happy to get through this match today, I have a lot more work to do, I'll be ready tomorrow," Gauff said. "I changed something at 4-1 (in the first set). It's tough to play against her because she hits the ball so fast, so low, I was just trying to fight for every point... to get the ball to the other side of the net." Gauff, who reached the final here in 2022, is the youngest woman to claim 25 main-draw wins at Roland Garros since Martina Hingis (1995-2000). The opening set was a scrappy affair, with the first three games going against serve. Keys secured the first hold to lead 3-1 and broke again before Gauff clawed back a break and held for the first time to close the gap to 4-3. In a flurry of breaks, Gauff levelled at 4-4 and held once more to edge ahead, putting the pressure on Keys, who saved a set point to force a tiebreak. While the quality was patchy at best, the drama was undeniable, with momentum swinging wildly. In the end, Keys edged the tiebreak as Gauff double-faulted three times, handing the opener to her opponent. Things did not get better in the second set. "So many unforced errors," Gauff said on court, in one of the understatements of the season. She levelled the contest as Keys looked out of sorts and cantered through the decider.
