A source said: 'Sal's devastated by the decision.
'She was central to the soap for so long as Rovers landlady but bosses wanted to go in a new direction. Her late night Instagram rants haven't helped matters but ultimately it was a story-led decision by the team.
'The writing was very much on the wall when Jenny lost the Rovers but an exciting exit has been planned for her.'
And Sally has now taken to social media to break her silence, sharing a photo in her role as Jenny grabbing hold of a balcony and peering over.
The actress wrote: 'I was supposed to stay for five months but ended up doing an extra ten years because I loved it so much!
'It's time though to play those parts I always hoped I would when I'd 'grown up.' Thanks Trafford Wharf Rd for the memories and endless laughter x'
Fans flooded the comments, with one person writing: 'You've been absolutely wonderful! ♥️' a second penned: 'One of my favourite characters. She is Corrie old school honesty and humour and will be missed.'
And a third echoed: 'you know how much we absolutely adore you, absolutely gutted to see you go 💔 thank YOU for all the memories, you have my support forever and ever xxx'
Sally Ann made her debut on the soap in 1986 as villain Alan Bradley's tearaway daughter.
CORONATION Street star Sally Ann Matthews has been axed from the soap 39 years after joining the soap.
She made a shock return in 2006 which was only meant to run for a matter of months - but ended up staying and becoming a central figure in the show for another decade.
The source added: 'Sal's Corrie royalty through and through and the decision hasn't gone down well.
'There's a lot of people going to be sitting there worried about their own futures.'
Sally Ann made headlines last year as she lashed out at the soap for not giving her the storylines which led to lengthy breaks from screen.
Earlier this year Sally insisted she wasn't leaving the show after fans began to worry, hitting back at suggestions she would be going.
However now she will film her final scenes in the coming months.

Helen Flanagan reveals the sad reason she is selling her £1million family home as she addresses 'broke' claims

Helen Flanagan has opened up on the reason she is selling her £1million family home following her split from her ex Scott Sinclair. The Coronation Street star, 34, split from her footballer ex-fiance back in 2022, and they share three children - Matilda, nine, Delilah, six, and Charlie, three - together. Earlier this year, Helen told in court how she was 'struggling financially' before being banned from driving for six months after being caught speeding. Now, Helen has set the record straight about her finances as she shared the sad reason why she has decided to sell her eight-bedroom £1million Cheshire mansion. 'I'm not in a financial crisis. I'm moving because I really need a fresh start,' she told OK! Magazine. 'Scott surprised me with this house and it was always supposed to be our happy family home, and it wasn't that. 'I like to be light-hearted and I hate to sound depressing, but there is a sadness in this house.' The former soap star admitted it had been 'a turbulent three years' and that she wanted to start fresh with her children. Helen hopes to move to London eventually, but for now, they are planning to stay where they are to avoid disrupting her kids' education. The soap star admitted that she will struggle to downsize from her lavish eight-bedroom house. Speaking on The Declutter Hub podcast with Ingrid Jansen and Lesley Spellman, she insisted she was 'down to earth' but that moving would be hard. I put loads of my savings into making it look really beautiful. It's eight bedrooms which is hard to keep on top of - it's a lot,' she shared. 'When we move I will struggle to downsize - I don't want to not sounds down to earth. Bu it will feel weird. It will be more manageable for me.' Helen split from Scott after 13 years together and then moved on with construction worker Robbie, 45, but they split in May and she now wants to be single. Speaking to The Mirror earlier this week, she explained: 'I'm concentrating on the kids, work, moving house and being with my friends. 'I'm quite sensitive and struggle with dating. There's always something with men. Now I want to be single a bit. 'Robbie was very sweet and kind. He was older than me and cared about me. 'Sometimes relationships just don't work long term.' Helen went on to admit that after Robbie's daughter Carina and her daughter Delilah became 'close', she will be hesitant to introduce her children to anyone in the future. Speaking on the Daily Mail's The Life of Bryony podcast in March, just weeks before their split, Helen gushed over her relationship with Robbie. She said: 'He's lovely. Everybody loves him. I just met him at a bar. I literally, I just, I could not stop laughing at this guy.' 'My boyfriend's actually the funniest guy I've ever met. He's got two kids and he's, he's really beautiful with my children.' 'I think that's what made me fall more in love with him because he's so good with my mental health things and that's the main thing for me that I need.' 'I need someone that's good for me mentally and emotionally, that's my top thing and that's what I've realised.' 'No disrespect to the father of my children, I'll always have that love for him, but he didn't know how to cope with me or didn't know how to do that, and not everybody does, but because the man that I'm with now really knows how to do that, it makes me happy.'

Love Island star admits she tried to quit series and slams show for using her for storyline

A Love Island star who appeared in Casa Amor this series has revealed she tried to quit the show. Stunning Rheo has said she is 'annoyed' about her experience in the villa after she grew close to ladies' man Harry Cooksley. 4 Rheo, who ended up getting sent home, has revealed she didn't want to do Casa at all. During a Q&A with fans today she said: 'I wanted to be flown home when they told me l was in casa. 'I just knew it wasn't going to be for me.I don't fight for the spotlight and certainly don't fight over a man.' She continued: ' I don't regret it but l'm annoyed that that was my love island experience, because realistically I won't get to do it again and l feel as though I was just a part in a big machine for Harry's storyline.' During her brief stint on the show she was seen chatting to Harry, but admitted she also got to know Conor but it wasn't aired. At first, Harry tried to stay respectful to Helena Ford by sleeping on the daybeds. But he was later seen snogging Rheo in bed and made fans feel sick when he told her that he would give her an orgasm. Teasing sex in their future, he also remarked: "I think we'll maybe see sooner than you think." Viewers were convinced that Harry would bring her back to the main villa and were shocked when he decided to ditch her. Speaking after her exit, Rheo said: She replied: "to be honest, I was as shocked as the rest of the nation, like, it's Harry, to be fair, what did I expect? Love Island's Rheo SLAMS Harry and reveals moment that never made it to air "But I was actually a bit shocked with him, because we did get deep. Harry has a deep level." She continued by branding him a gameplayer saying: "I think he wanted to repair his reputation there. "Just go in, go with Helena, and hopefully get to the end. I know he's got a game plan." Harry did get back with Helena when he returned but just days after going exclusive with her he decided he wanted to be with Shakira. Helena has since been dumped from the island and he is heading towards the final with Shakira. 4 4
