Mum on £3,500 holiday forced to get up early to tackle 'unfair' sunbed war

Daily Mail15 hours ago
A mother on holiday with her family has revealed how she was forced to get up early because of 'unfair' sunbed hogs.
Lianne Smith, 39, spent a week in Cala'n Bosch with her husband, two children, parents and her brother.
However, her £3,500 holiday wasn't quite as relaxing as Lianne hoped as she soon found herself battling other overly keen tourists for sun loungers in the mornings.
She revealed she found it hard to secure six beds together, because of other eager holidaymakers reserving them in the early hours.
'It goes against what I think is right. It's annoying, but you pay all that money - and if you can't beat them, join them,' the mother-of-two said.
Lianne, from Bristol, recalled how even though the hotel pool didn't officially open until 10am, nearly a third of the sun loungers were gone by 8.30am.
She explained how a lot of the 'taken' sun beds were actually for children who would spend most of their time in the pool.
The holidaymaker said: 'The first morning we tried to get sunbeds together, but by the time we arrived, people had already staked their spots well before the pool even opened.
However, her £3,500 holiday wasn't quite as relaxing as Lianne hoped as she soon found herself battling other overly keen tourists for sun loungers in the mornings
'When we showed up, there was no way to sit next to each other – everyone was spread out all around the pool.
'We tried arriving later on another day, but it was the same story every time.'
Lianne explained how she ended up 'sneaking out' while the kids were still sleeping and put towels on beds.
'What really gets to me is when people reserve beds for their kids – it feels unfair,' she fumed.
'We'd never reserve spots for all 10 of us.
'The kids are usually in the pool anyway, so we just share beds.'
Lianne posted about her experience on TikTok, and said that although she enjoyed the holiday overall, other tourists creating daily sunbed wars wasn't so relaxing.
She said: 'Most people agreed it's super frustrating. We spent one morning at the beach, but usually, we prefer to hang around the pool.'

The mother shared that she had heard about a sunbed booking system used elsewhere and felt it was a good solution to the problem.
She said: 'One person mentioned they'd been somewhere with a ticket system to book sunbeds in advance.
'I'm honestly surprised there isn't a better way to manage it all.

Nepo-baby model spotted patiently queueing for Jet2 flight despite family's huge wealth – would you have spotted him?

THIS nepo-baby model was spotted queuing for a Jet2 flight - despite their family's huge wealth. The 22-year-old appeared to keep a low profile dressed in a black hooded jumper and a pair of matching jogging trousers. 6 6 The famous star was seen looking down at his phone while standing between the velvet barriers while queuing. This lad has an A-lister family with millions in the bank - but decided to fly with budget airline Jet2. The celebrity was then seen patiently waiting in the queue, before a fan snapped a picture of him sitting quietly on board the plane. The star had a black beanie hat over his head and his headphones in his ears. He was seen sitting in the window seat and glancing at his phone. But have you worked out who he is yet? It's none other than Victoria and David Beckham's son Romeo. 6 6 6 A fan shared a video of Romeo at Birmingham Airport yesterday and said the star was on their flight to France. The TikTok video showed the model looking miles away as he waited to board. Many were quick to comment on the post, with one saying Romeo's designer luggage was a dead giveaway of who he was. One wrote: "Blending in with thousands and thousands of pounds worth of bags." A second said: "Just shows he's normal like the rest of us..." Romeo's getaway comes after his brother Brooklyn's vow renewal with wife Nicola Peltz. A source close to the Beckham family branded "a gratuitous display of obscene wealth". None of the Beckhams were invited to the lavish ceremony on August 2 — presided over by Nicola's billionaire dad Nelson — and only read about it on an American website. Now a source close to the Beckhams says the family has questioned Brooklyn's need to renew his vows after just three years. One friend said: 'They would understand if it was, say, 10 years down the line - maybe even five. But three?! It seems like quite a gratuitous display of obscene wealth. "Also, if Brooklyn wanted to create a really cute memory, why couldn't he have just let his family know their plans first? 'To be honest, although there have been moments of rapprochement, this hostility dates back to 2021, around six months before the original wedding. "The dynamics have just never really gelled. 'Of course David and Victoria want Brooklyn to be happy and clearly he is wildly in love still, but a lot of people have been hurt. "It is a very sad situation and everyone fears there is no way back now. It is done.' FAMILY FALLOUT It was also revealed that even Brooklyn's grandparents were excluded from the special day - despite their close relationship. Yesterday a source said: 'This was the final kick in the teeth for David and Victoria. 'Seeing Nelson having such a pivotal role at the ceremony was heartbreaking for David especially. "Not one member of the 30-plus extended family knew about the wedding, or were invited. 'His grandparents are devastated too as Brooklyn has always been so close to them. 'It feels cruel and spiteful. This is no longer a game. It has gone beyond all that. 'This is a family who feel they have lost their precious boy - and see no way back. "Honestly, they are now questioning why he even wants to keep the 'Beckham' surname - will he revert to Peltz? August 2nd 2025 - is this the day Brooklyn formally declared himself no longer a part of the Beckham family? 'It certainly feels like it.' In the photos shared by the couple on Instagram, they are surrounded by Nicola's family and friends. The actress looked stunning in a repurposed dress which her mum Claudia wore when she married tycoon Nelson in 1985. She also sported the same original £1.3million ring. Brooklyn's original wedding with Nicola took place on Nelson's estate in Palm Beach, Florida, with Brooklyn's sister Harper among the bridesmaids. This time the couple chose Nelson's Westchester estate in New York as the backdrop. Alongside the images, the couple wrote: 'only love.' They also posted a video of their very casual proposal on TikTok alongside a song by Ysabelle Cuevas with the words: 'Lost in your eyes.' Brooklyn, who wore a suit with no tie, called the ceremony a 'really beautiful experience' which was all about creating a 'really cute memory' they would treasure forever. There had been a lot of tension before the original wedding. The Beckhams claim Nicola was a 'bridezilla' and hard work, while the Peltzes say their in-laws are 'tight'. There were also claims Victoria hijacked the first dance. Earlier this year Brooklyn and Nicola were absent from the ex-Man United star's 50th birthday celebrations. 6

I'm a skint mum of three – these are the FREE attractions my kids love going to

IF YOU fancy a National Trust day out but you're not a member, there's some easy-to-overlook sites that won't cost you a penny to access. We all think about the historic houses and great estates that National Trust and English Heritage look after around the country. 4 4 But it's easy to forget that they both have lots of free locations too, giving access to our coastlines and countryside for the cost of car parking. I'm lucky to have two reservoir reserves right on my doorstep, both of which have lovely waterside walks, a playground for the kids and a cafe for those all-important refreshments. Even better, National Trust members can park free, since the organisation took over looking after Staunton Harold Reservoir and nearby Foremark on the border of Leicestershire and Derbyshire a couple of years ago. In the school holidays, there's often kids' activities like circus skills or kite-making that anyone can turn up and have a go at. Calke Abbey, which is a location you have to pay to access, is in-between the two and has one of the National Trust's biggest woodland play areas and a huge walled garden full of fun like hobby horses, den building, garden games and craft stations throughout the summer holidays. There's enough there for a full day out, but if you're just after somewhere outdoors to while away a few hours, its free neighbours could be perfect. To be honest, we very rarely visit the inside spaces when we go to National Trust places anyway as my boys prefer to be in the fresh air. So it's great that you have the option of playgrounds and woodland walks without having to pay. It's not just hidden countryside spots that are great to explore for free. I'm a mum and here's '10/10' free day out near Glasgow I swear by for summer hols There's some incredible coastal sites that fall under National Trust and English Heritage ownership too. If you're heading to Norfolk for your holidays, there's the remains of a big Roman fort tucked away behind Parkdean's Breydon Water caravan site. Burgh Castle, looked after by English Heritage, is a short stroll away from the caravans if you're staying there or there's a small car park for visitors just up the road. It's amazing how much of the fort walls have survived and you can get a sense of how the Romans built their empire. We've been there many times over the years and there's only ever a handful of visitors about, even in the height of summer. Just up the Norfolk Coast is the National Trust's Blakeney Point, home to a colony of seals. 4 We stayed nearby for our first wedding anniversary and it really is a very special place. Just remember to give the wildlife plenty of space if you want to visit it in its natural environment. When we headed up north last year, we went to several English Heritage sites along Hadrian's Wall, including Housesteads Fort. But it's easy to forget that most of the 73 miles of wall are free to access and looked after by various organisations like National Trust and English Heritage. My top tip if you're heading to one of these free sites and aren't a member is to try to support the location by buying something from the cafe or giving a small donation if you can. Always follow the countryside code to leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but memories so that these wonderful wildlife havens remain unspoilt for future generations. With 620,000 acres of land and 780 miles of coast belonging to the National Trust, you're bound to find somewhere to visit not far from your doorstep - and you might not even need to pay a penny to enjoy your local location. Free summer holiday activites You don't need to spend a penny to keep your kids entertained this summer... Museums - Some museums offer free entry to some exhibits, and also host events for kids. Parks - Head to your local park to enjoy the playgrounds, games areas, courts and splash pads. Some even have trails for kids to enjoy. Beach - It doesn't have to be sunny to enjoy the beach, you can go rock pooling, crabbing, make sandcastles, or enjoy a walk along the headland. Library - If the weather is awful, head indoors and borrow books, audiobooks, dvds. Cooking - Have your own mini bake-off, or Come Dine With Me challenge. Playdates - Invite friends over for an afternoon of socialising. Boardgames - Enjoy a little sibling rivalry with rounds of Monopoly or stretch your brain with Scrabble. The National Trust has also revealed their best free attractions to visit this summer – from sky gardens to 'city oasis' parks. Plus, these are the National Trust's top family-friendly attractions with fairytale castles and 'book jungles'. 4

Sunbed wars continue across Europe as people line up by pool gates in the early hours and 'sprint' to grab their spot in 'embarrassing' holiday trend

British holidaymakers are once again leading the charge in the annual sunbed wars sweeping European tourist hotspots. Sunseekers armed with towels, suncream, and flip flops were captured queuing at pool gates from as early as 6am just to bag their favourite lounger in resorts across Spain, Greece, and Portugal. Footage shared on TikTok showed determined Brits forming orderly lines outside hotel pools before waiting on a whistle, in some cases, to competitively run to their chosen lounger. Numerous guests have captured the chaotic scenes from their hotel balconies, often expressing amusement at the bizarre behaviour unfolding below. Isabelle Hanssen, from the Netherlands, who was enjoying a holiday at Barceló Lanzarote Active Resort, Spain, filmed guests racing to lay out towels across multiple loungers. Taking to her TikTok @isabellehanssen, she wrote: 'Nothing like the 9:30 sunbed sprint to start your relaxing holiday.' Meanwhile influencer Chelsea Rushworth, from York, revealed people start queuing at 7:30am for the pool to open to 8am. In a clip, which racked up over 170,000 views, she filmed holiday makers at Atlantica Oasis Hotel, Cyprus, 'waiting for the whistle' before they ran to a sunbed. She said: 'Look at this. Sunbed wars. People are queuing to put their towels on a bed. All of them. Everywhere, there's groups of people. 'They're all waiting for the whistle. Oh, my God, look at him!' She captioned the video: 'Sorry I can't even cope with this.' Meanwhile another exasperated traveller in Crete filmed a crowd gathering outside the pool area at five-star hotel Akasha Beach Hotel and Spa, located in Hersonissos. Kia Millington, from North Wales, was clearly puzzled as she watched people scramble for sunbeds from her hotel balcony, saying: 'There's three pools and a private beach area BTW.' She claimed she saw four arguments break out and three people 'stormed off' while trying to secure their spot by the pool. The clip saw dozens of guests charging towards available loungers as the pool opened for the day. Elsewhere mother-of-two Alanna captured the tense moment people sprinted for sunbeds at a resort in Tenerife. Taking to her TikTok @alannab17, she shared a clip of a man running for his spot the minute the gates to the pool opened with others on his tail. Many confused travellers slammed the behaviour as 'embarrassing' in the comments. One person wrote: 'I've seen this recently in Mallorca. How sad that people do this! How is it a holiday when this is their priority??!! It's so embarrassing to see.' Another added: 'Why do people wanna lay so bad by a pool, if there's an ocean nearby.' Someone else fumed: 'This reminds me of how much I detest MOST Hotel holidays…. Plonk the towels down, pretend to read a book, go to brekky for hour and half, put sunscreen on for another half hour, back to the sun bed and then ** ss off to the beach all day.' A fourth added: 'Imagine doing that everyday. that's not a relaxing holiday.' However others understood why some people like to queue for their sunbed location. One person wrote: 'Waiting for the whistle. There should be an adequate amount of beds for every guest. As much as it annoys me I do understand why people do it. You don't want to be round the pool with no beds.' Another said: 'This is ridiculous, maybe hotels should allocate sun beds to rooms that way we all have one.' It comes after two British holidaymakers got into a furious row over a sunbed at a three-star Lanzarote hotel in May. A disgruntled woman could be seen telling a sunbather that she is going to complain about her to the manager at the Hyde Park Lane apartments on the Spanish island. Footage shows the woman, who appears to have a Scottish accent and is wearing a pink cover up, accusing the other Brit of taking a spot which members of her group had been occupying 'all week'. The tourist lying on the sunbed warns her 'don't be rude' and tells her to 'turn around and walk away'. Holidaymaker Callum Lines, who can be heard shouting 'Karen' at the woman in pink, witnessed the commotion while sunbathing poolside and decided to film the row. 'The Scottish lady said they had been using those beds all week, accusing the couple lying down and moving their items,' Lines, 31, said. 'Just to the left, out of shot, was a sign stating no reservation of sunbeds. I'm not sure this was the case though'. The holidaymaker, from Leamington Spa, said the Scottish woman then left to hunt down hotel management - who he said never showed up. 'There were plenty more available beds - all with equal sun exposure - so this really wasn't needed,' Lines said. 'I've always got two pence to share even when it's probably not required, but you come away for a rest and some relaxation.' Lines said he was also on the receiving end of the woman in pink's complaints. In the video the angry woman claimed she had been there all week and said she now had to relocate. Lines chipped in: 'Excuse me is there somebody underneath you? Are you sat on someone?' The woman on the sun lounger said: 'Get your facts right before you start accusing people,' to which the other woman responded: 'That's what I said to you.' The sunbathing woman then tells her: 'Don't be rude, turn around and walk away.' The fuming woman denies being rude, to which Lines pipes up: 'Get out of her face then.' The bikini clad sunbather continued: 'Turn around and walk away,' but the other woman insists that her group had been sitting in the spot before her. 'They've had to move,' she said, but the woman responded: 'I don't care.' The man laying beside her piped up and told the woman to 'go away,' and Lines reassured him that the fiasco was being filmed. The woman in pink then said: 'Sitting here and you say you didn't move and take their stuff away.' The other Brit quickly fired back: 'But why ain't they got their names on them then? 'You come over here rude, turn around and walk away. You've picked on the wrong person, turn around and walk away now.' The angry lady told the sunbathers she was going to report them to management before Lines yelled out and called her a 'Karen'. She then turned on him and said: 'Don't be cheeky, don't be smart mouthed either. 'You don't know who you're talking to and you don't know who we're here with.' Lines quipped: 'Ronnie Pickering?' But she said: 'Just keep your f******g mouth shut.' One woman wearing a black cap and bikini could be seen gesturing to the 'Karen' to walk away. The pair went back and forth as the woman in pink claimed someone had moved their beds.
