Euro 2025: Norway stars Hegerberg and Graham Hansen return for first quarterfinal in 12 years
Now 12 years on, Ada Hegerberg and Caroline Graham Hansen — a Ballon d'Or winner and a runner-up in the voting, respectively — are team leaders for Norway's first game in the knockout rounds since Euro 2013, against Italy on Wednesday.
'People expect things from us now,' Graham Hansen acknowledged Tuesday, calling their situation today a 'complete difference.'
'We were like 18 and nobody expected nothing from us. We also just wanted to show what we could contribute at the time,' she said while sitting alongside Hegerberg.
'I wasn't playing with much pressure at all (in 2013),' said Graham Hansen, who started in the final that Norway lost 1-0 to Germany. 'I was just going for it.'
Graham Hansen and Hegerberg have combined to score 102 national-team goals, and the first of those at a major tournament was in that quarterfinal game in 2013 in Sweden. Hegerberg got Norway's third in a 3-1 win over Spain with a curling shot that went in off a post.
Both have added one goal each in Switzerland this month to help Norway sweep the group stage with three victories. Hansen's crafty 84th-minute goal sealed a 2-1 win over Finland and sent Norway into the last eight with a game to spare.
'The start couldn't be any better,' Hegerberg said in translated comments. 'We can enjoy that we have such a strong position.'
A new generation also is emerging, and one highly rated prospect made her mark when Norway was already sure to top its group that included Switzerland and rested both standout forwards.
Signe Gaupset, who turned 20 last month, scored twice early in a 4-3 win over Iceland on Thursday. She was youngest player in the tournament's 41-year history to do that and later added two assists for Frida Maanum's goals.

'She's young, and that is additional motivation to take the opportunities you get,' Graham Hansen said of Gaupset, as if describing her younger self. 'She's a big talent.'
Norway coach Gemma Grainger said Gaupset's performance 'wasn't much of a surprise to any of us' though would not be drawn if the Brann winger will retain her place on the left flank to face Italy.
The winner Wednesday in Geneva will return to the city next Tuesday for a semifinal against either Sweden or England.

Daren Sammy was Russell's captain at both World Cup triumphs and has become his national coach. 'Andre has always been the consummate professional and a fierce competitor,' Sammy said. 'Whether I was captaining him or now coaching him, his hunger to perform and win for West Indies has never wavered. I wish him all the best on his next chapter, and I hope he continues to inspire generations to come.' Russell began his international career at age 22 with his sole test in 2010 against Sri Lanka. He played his 56th and last one-day international at the 2019 World Cup. He was a controversial selection as he'd played only one ODI since 2015 following a doping ban and knee injury. But he became the fastest player, in terms of balls played, to 1,000 ODI runs. Since then he's become a T20 great, sought by franchises all over the world. No Welsh players in a British and Irish Lions test team for the first time in 129 years
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — An important element in the great tradition of uniting players from Britain and Ireland to form the Lions will be missing Saturday when there's no Welshman in the test squad for the first time in 129 years. It'll be the might of Ireland, England and Scotland against Australia. Back-rower Jac Morgan was the only Welshman left in the touring group in Australia when scrumhalf Tomos Williams injured his hamstring and was ruled out of the series. Morgan's impressive appearances in the leadup to the three-test series against Australia weren't enough to earn him a spot in a back row comprising of Irish No. 8 Jack Conan and blindside flanker Tadhg Beirne and England openside Tom Curry. England's Ollie Chessum and Ben Earl were picked as cover off the bench. In announcing his match-day 23 on Thursday, Lions head coach Andy Farrell said Morgan got 'as close as you could imagine' to selection. He said he was 'gutted' for players like Morgan who were in good form and could have been picked but missed out because of the incredible depth in some areas and for the balance of the squad. 'Shows where we're at as a group,' Farrell said. 'That's the right balance for the first test.' Beirne is a big game player, strong on turnovers and ball-carrying, and complements Conan, Farrell said, while Curry has the kind of 'engine' needed to win a test. Farrell said there'd been 'very vigorous debate' in the composition of the team but ultimately all the selectors settled on the combination. Saudi Arabia and Qatar gain home advantage in next Asia qualifiers for 2026 World Cup
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Saudi Arabia and Qatar drew home advantage in the fourth round of Asia qualifying for the 2026 World Cup on Thursday. In October, Qatar will host Group A that also contains the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Saudi Arabia welcomes Iraq and Indonesia into Group B. The winner of each round-robin group will take Asia's last two remaining automatic spots at next summer's tournament, to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The teams that finish second will then meet, with the winner progressing to inter-confederation playoffs, which are scheduled for March 2026.
