Austria school shooter's mother saw suicide message too late to stop attack

Telegrapha day ago

The suspected school shooter who killed at least 11 in the Austrian city of Graz sent his mother a suicide video warning of his plans ahead of the attack.
The mother alerted the police to the video 24 minutes after receiving it, by which point the Tuesday morning killing spree had already started, according to a report.
The 21-year-old suspect, a former student at the school identified in local media as 'Artur A', opened fire inside two classrooms at the BORG Dreierschützengasse school at around 10am, before killing himself in a toilet.
The gunman, who wounded a further 12 people, was a dropout who allegedly considered himself to have been a victim of bullying at the school, although police have not confirmed this.
According to Heute, an Austrian newspaper, he declared his plans to attack the school in the farewell video, but his mother opened it too late.
In the deadliest mass shooting in Austria's history, nine people – six women and three men including students and an adult – were shot dead at the school itself.
Two more victims died from their injuries after being taken to hospital.
After raiding his home on Tuesday, police said they found a farewell note as well as the suicide video, but it did not reveal the motive for the attack. A non-functioning pipe bomb was also discovered.
'A farewell letter in analogue and digital form was found,' Franz Ruf, the director of public security, told ORF public television.
'He says goodbye to his parents. But no motive can be inferred from the farewell letter,' he said, adding that investigations into the motive were moving swiftly.
Only 17 minutes elapsed between the first emergency calls received by police about shots being fired and the school being declared safe, Mr Ruf said.
The suicide video was reported within this time frame, Heute reported.
Police said the guns used were in the suspect's possession legally, and Mr Ruf said that while Austrian gun laws are strict, the case was being looked into. 'If there are any loopholes, they need to be closed,' he said.
'Dark day' for Austria
The city was on alert for potential copycat attacks after police revealed they had received a threat against another school in Graz late on Tuesday.
Christian Stocker, the Austrian chancellor, called the mass shooting a 'dark day in the history of the country' on Tuesday as he declared three days of national mourning.
Hundreds came together in Graz's main square on Tuesday evening to remember the victims. Others left flowers and lit candles outside the school, while dozens queued to donate blood for the survivors.
By Wednesday morning, health authorities in Graz said that all patients were in stable condition.
Nine were still in intensive care units, with one needing a further operation on a facial wound and a second on a knee injury, while another two had been moved to regular wards.

Terrifying moment Fiat speeds backwards and swerves onto grass verge as 60 masked youths riot after funeral of teen who died in crash

This is the shocking moment a damaged Fiat 500 was spotted reversing erratically down a road with its boot open during riots in Salford. The large group of 60 masked youths watched on as the car - which was missing its bumper - mounted the kerb and swerved on a grass verge yesterday afternoon, narrowly missing the crowd. The driver managed to dodge other vehicles as they pulled out onto the road where the youths had reportedly set fire to vehicles and threw bricks at officers. The car was allegedly driven by some of the masked youths, with some seen hanging out of the window and open boot. A black car was also speeding along the street, with people appearing to be clinging to the roof and hanging out of the windows. Serious disorder had broken out after the funeral of a teenager who died in a horror crash nearby, with cars and wheelie bins used to block the road. Riot police were called in to deal with trouble in the Lower Broughton Road area and a number of arrests were made yesterday after 50 to 60 people gathered. A dispersal order was put in place that ended today after 'vehicles were damaged and burnt out' while 'stolen cars and motorbikes were used', Greater Manchester Police said. Bricks were also thrown at officers. A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of theft and public order. A man in his 30s was detained on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly; and possession of Class A drugs. Two men, aged 18 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article. A 16-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with assaulting an emergency worker. Local Jayne Stoney responded to the video, saying: 'What in the pizza delivery is going on here?' Another added that it 'looks like a lovely neighbourhood' while Lorraine Derham called it 'vile behaviour. Other footage from the riots showed the smouldering wreckage of one car, while several others have had their bodywork dented and windscreens smashed in. Videos shared on Facebook, supposedly from the scene, also show several masked youngsters launching projectiles at police officers and riding through the streets on dirt bikes. In the wake of the disorder, GMP said: 'We are aware of speculation online that this incident is linked to immigration, this is categorically incorrect.' The force has not commented further. But Salford's deputy mayor has now said the trouble was 'provoked' by the funeral of one of the teenagers who died following a crash on Lower Broughton Road on May 22. Kailem Robinson, 16 and Kaine Darby, 17 both died following a collision between a car and the motorbike they were on. The driver of the car, a 24-year-old woman, stopped to assist officers at the scene. Kailem's funeral took place on Wednesday and no family members, or attendees of the funeral, were involved in the disorder, according to The Manchester Evening News. Councillor John Merry posted on X, formerly Twitter, last night saying: 'I fully support the actions of GMP in Lower Broughton today. 'The death of two young people is a tragedy, but it would also be tragic if vulnerable residents were left frightened and afraid to go outside.' He told the Manchester Evening News the 'funeral of one of the individuals.... provoked the disorder'. He said he believed most people went out to honour the teenagers, but that there were 'a few hotheads determined to cause trouble'. A crowd of people are filmed gathering on the streets today amid an afternoon of chaos Councillor Merry said he was 'saddened' by Kaine and Kailem's deaths, but that there was 'no justification for intimidation and trying to attack law-abiding residents' property'. He said GMP handled the incident 'correctly' as there was a 'serious threat to property'. The Manchester Evening News previously reported how people living nearby claimed they were being 'terrorised' in the wake of the fatal crash, with flats daubed in 'RIP graffiti'. In a statement issued via GMP last week, Kaine's mum Danielle Hughes said: 'I don't condone the behaviour that has been going on at the scene since the accident - the spray-painting, vandalism and motorbikes riding round. 'This is not what Kaine would have wanted. We want peace and to remember Kaine calmly, surrounded by his loved ones. 'This has shocked the whole family. It was a tragic accident that should never have happened that I don't want to tarnish Kaine's legacy.' Kailem's mum Jill said in a statement issued on Saturday the community had 'rallied round' her, taking her flowers and shopping and raising money for the family. 'I would like to thank the community of Lower Broughton for their support, from both those who knew Kailem and those who didn't,' she added. 'Everyone has rallied round to help with donations, flowers and a Go Fund Me page to help with the funeral. Kailem's friends have been amazing, bringing shopping round and just being here trying to comfort me and give me some normality. 'Kailem will be missed by everyone, the reaction from the community has shown how loved he was by everyone who knew him.' A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson gave an update last night saying: 'At 1.30pm, we responded to reports of between 50 and 60 people gathered on Lower Broughton Road who were using cars and wheelie bins to block off the road. 'Following investigations by officers this afternoon, we have detained four men in relation to three different incidents in the Salford area. 'A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of theft and public order, before a man in his 30s was detained on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and possession of Class A drugs. 'Two men aged 18 and 19 have been arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article. 'A 16-year-old female - who cannot be named for legal reasons - has been charged with assaulting an emergency worker and has been bailed to appear at court at a future date.' Supt Marcus Noden added: 'I wanted to provide a further update into the disorder in Salford this afternoon, I would like to stress that there have been no further incidents since our last update. 'We have robust plans in place should any further incidents arise in the area, and we will take action like we did earlier on in the day, should we need to.'
