Gerwyn Price shows trues colours in Luke Littler darts debate as he sends clear message
Pumped-up Gerwyn Price has delivered a don't care message as he bids for Blackpool glory.
The Iceman faces Josh Rock in a mouth-watering last-eight tie at the Betfred World Matchplay.
Price's Monday bust-up with Daryl Gurney and his outstanding performances have made him a headline act at this year's Winter Gardens showpiece.
The Welshman is deemed the biggest threat to World champ Luke Littler 's chances of winning the crown with strong debate over whether, right now, he is the best player in darts.
Price, though, has no interest in such discussions and said: 'I'm getting back to my best. I don't care about best player in the world.
"I just want to play as well as I can and get some ranking points under my belt and get back into the top four, maybe World No.1 after the World Championship.
"There's a lot of points on offer. So I'm just looking forward to the rest of the year and playing well. Provisionally I'm world number seven.
"If I win this, I go up to world number four. Off the back of the year that I had last year, I mean, I never thought that was going to be possible when I was outside the top 16, scraping to get back in.
"It goes to show if you have a decent year, then you can get right back up.
'The longer the format, the more confident I feel and the more belief I have in my game because sometimes the cream does rise, but there's so many good players in this tournament and they probably say the same. They prefer the longer format, so it's going to be some tough battles if I want to lift this trophy.
'I'm confident in my own game. It just gives me the self-belief and gives me a good boost of confidence, but yes, I don't care about the rest.'
Price was blistering in his demolition of Chris Dobey in the last 16 and said: 'In the middle part of that game. I don't think you can get any better.
"If I'm banging in 180, 180 back to back, you definitely can't get any better. So yes, I was right up there with my A-plus game in the middle part of that game.
"I was decent at the beginning and slipped off towards the end, probably trying to just get over the winning line. But yes, I think that's my A-game. I've got a little bit more on the tank, I think, in patches, but the middle part of the game, it was probably my best.
'I have played better than that before. I can remember the Grand Slam final against Peter Wright. When I won, I think I was averaging 114, 115 for most of the game. But that's right up there, maybe close second, third behind that. I don't know, but it was a good game for me.
'If I play like that in the next round, I've got a really good chance. And if I play like that all the way through, then there's no reason why I can't [win it]. But there's so many players left in this tournament that can do that as well. It's going to be tough, but I think I've got a good chance.'

Pricey Wrexham signing 'just like Jack Wilshere' as ex-team-mates' comments speak volumes
Wrexham have signed a Premier League midfielder who has been compared to Jack Wilshere in a deal worth a reported £5million as they prepare for life in the Championship Wrexham have signed a new player who has been highly praised by his former team-mates and managers. The Red Dragons swooped to bring in Lewis O'Brien from Nottingham Forest on Thursday in a deal reportedly worth up to £5million. The Welsh side fended off interest from other Championship clubs to secure the midfielder's signature on a three-year contract, becoming their sixth summer arrival. The 26-year-old impressed on loan in the second tier with Swansea City during the second half of last season after previously spending time with Los Angeles FC in the MLS. O'Brien said he was "absolutely buzzing" to join Wrexham after the deal was announced. Such are his talents that he was even compared to ex- England and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere by one of his colleagues at Forest. Defender Moussa Niakhate drew the parallels in a post on Instagram after O'Brien delivered a man-of-the-match performance in a 1-0 victory over West Ham shortly after arriving at the club in 2022. His attributes were also hailed by former Forest boss Steve Cooper. "Lewis is a great ball carrier, he has a good engine and is great technically. He is tactically good as well," said Cooper after O'Brien joined. "Lewis is driven to do well. I had a good conversation with him about that and it is important to us. "We can get even more out of him, which is the exciting bit. I had a positive talk with [Ryan] Yatesy about him because they had a few good ding-dongs. There is a real mutual respect between them." O'Brien's former Bradford team-mate Adam Chicksen, who now plays for Notts County, is another who has praised his strengths. Speaking to The Athletic in 2022, Chicksen said: "His attitude had a really good impact on the team. "He was never arrogant, he was humble and he never stopped listening, even when he had established himself as an important figure. He was so good at being in the right position; he would break lines and get into dangerous areas. "He was always on the move. He could strike a ball really, really well. He was a smart, intelligent player. His passing was so clean, so smooth. There was never any bobble. You never worried about getting a ball from him. He had a bit of everything." Despite his qualities, O'Brien failed to make an impact at Forest and leaves the City Ground after only featuring on 17 occasions for the club. He made 16 appearances for Swansea on loan last season after arriving during the January transfer window. He played an important part as they secured a mid-table finish in the Championship after previously flirting with relegation. Speaking after signing for Wrexham, O'Brien said: "I'm absolutely buzzing. "It's been a long time coming, but to be here is great. The last couple of years has been a whirlwind for me and my family, but to sign a long-term contract and find somewhere I can call home is a great feeling. "After speaking to everyone here, it's a club with a lot of ambition. I want to be part of that journey, and take Wrexham to where they want to be." Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said: "I'm delighted to welcome Lewis to the club. He's a player with a lot of experience at this level and will be a great addition to the group. We're looking forward to working with him." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Ryan Reynolds and Wrexham have same golden transfer rule as Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta
A Wrexham director has lifted the lid on manager Phil Parkinson's stringent player recruitment strategy, which closely mirrors Mikel Arteta's approach at Arsenal Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has a golden rule when signing new players which echoes the approach taken by Arsenal's Mikel Arteta. The former Sunderland and Bradford manager has delivered unprecedented success since taking charge of the Welsh side in July 2021. Backed by the money of Hollwood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Parkinson has achieved three successive promotions, lifting the Red Dragons from the National League to the Championship. Wrexham 's critics often use their riches as a reason to pour cold water on their accomplishments. However, club director Shaun Harvey has now shone a light on the extensive homework Parkinson does before bringing in new recruits. Similar to the strict non-negotiables Arteta has set out in relation to players' personalities at Arsenal, Wrexham have a firm "no d*******s" policy. Harvey lifted the lid on the secret to the club's tried and tested methods in the transfer market while appearing on ex-Wrexham and Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster 's Fozcast podcast. "We still have what most people would recognise as a more traditional model, where the manager is all things," said the former EFL chief executive. "He helps recruit players, identify players, and ultimately, from a footballing perspective, Phil has the ultimate sign off. "It's been couched around Wrexham as Phil's d******* test. Is he going to fit in, or is he going to upset the dressing room culture? The dressing room culture plays such a big part in the success of any team so background checks will be done. Some will be good, some will be bad. "The bad ones, you don't take forward and you leave them on one side. The best player signings are those that have probably been discussed that little bit more openly with a group of people who've got no vested interest other than the success of the football club." Wrexham have so far made six signings this summer, initially bringing in Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie, Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward and Empoli left-back Liberato Cacace in the months since gaining promotion from League One. They have also added Bolton captain George Thomason, former Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass and Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien to their ranks this week. Parkinson's stringent focus on prioritising the right type of character is very similar to Arteta's ethos at Arsenal. The Spaniard has explained the high demands he sets for incoming players on several occasions. Speaking to Amazon Prime Sport Video in 2022, he said: "Around the club, we have to make a lot of good decisions and when we talk about non-negotiables, it's about the values that have to be installed. If someone is going to damage those values and environment, they should not be part of the club. "When we set the objectives, we made a compromise that only the best people and the best players are going to come through this door. And when you cannot recruit that, it's better not to recruit." Expanding further on his requirements, Arteta told the Men in Blazers podcast: "I will try to recruit players that we can all feel that they are part of us, and they are able to transmit the values and the ideas that we have at the club. "First of all they have to love the game, and someone that loves winning. They need to love the club, so they need to be willing to join us for the right reasons, and then characters that can complement what we already have and provide what we don't have."
