Iowa Republicans release bill that looks to overhaul property tax system
DES MOINES, Iowa — High property taxes is something that Iowans have known well for the last several years, along with city leaders trying to find ways to overcome shortfalls in budgets.
Senate Study Bill 1208 and House Study Bill 313 are companion bills that look to overhaul the current property tax system in the state according to the republican bill sponsors.
'In previous years, anytime we've done property tax legislation, it's been calling around the edges, tinkering with in the current system, making incremental improvements to the current system and this bill takes a completely different approach,' said State Representative Bobby Kaufmann (R) District 82 from Wilton.
The bill is estimated by the republican sponsors to provide $426 million in property tax cuts, implements a 2% revenue restriction to give relief to Iowans, $25,000 homestead tax credit and gives seniors a property tax freeze if they make less than a certain income threshold. The bill aims to lower tax levies by phasing out a rollback system that hasn't been updated since 1977. These changes would be applied over the next half decade.

'Iowans will get a $400 million property tax cut through basically the state assuming a greater portion of school funding,' said State Senator Dan Dawson (R) District 10, from Council Bluffs.
Rep. Kaufmann and Sen. Dawson said the bill was a result of years of conversations with local and city governments. There is no expectation for the bill to move forward quickly as both want the state to see the proposal, and amendments may be added. They both expect the bill to pass this session.
Democrat leadership and members of the Iowa House caucus responded to the bill dropping on Thursday afternoon.
'Iowans should be extremely skeptical about the GOP's latest property tax plan. Over the last decade, every attempt by GOP lawmakers to fix Iowa's property tax system has failed. Property taxes just keep going up every year, especially for homeowners. House Democrats believe we need to put money back in the pockets of homeowners and renters immediately.'

Silver prices hit 13-year high as dollar weakens amid tariff uncertainty: 'The breakout has been brewing'
Silver (SI=F) prices surged to 13-year highs on Thursday, breaking above $35 per ounce amid uncertainty over President Trump's tariff policy and the continued decline of the US dollar. Spot silver rose to climb above $35.90, its highest level since February 2012, while futures for July delivery (SI=F) jumped more than 4% to hover above $36 per troy ounce. The move follows a recent resurgence in gold (GC=F) prices, which have been driven by trade policy uncertainty and continued central bank demand buying. "The breakout has been brewing for a while," Maria Smirnova, senior portfolio manager and chief investment officer at Sprott Asset Management, told Yahoo Finance on Thursday. "Silver had attempted to break through the $35 level a couple of times in recent months, so this is highly significant." "Furthermore, if the technical move catalyzes physical investor buying, it can take silver much higher very quickly," she added. The market for silver, sitting just above an estimated $2 trillion, is much smaller than gold's more than $22 trillion. That makes the volatility in silver prices up to two to three times greater than that of gold. "We have been talking for a while about the supply/demand deficits in silver, since 2021 there has been a cumulative 800m oz draw and the deficits are projected to continue. Silver has a very positive investment case right now," Smirnova said. A falling US dollar index ( has also sent the price of silver lower, given the inverse correlation between the greenback and precious metals. The greenback has been under pressure in recent weeks amid weariness over increased fiscal US spending as capital shifts toward currencies and stocks abroad. Trump's proposed tax bill, which is said to raise the debt ceiling by $4 trillion, passed the House last month. Year to date, silver is up more than 23%. Gold has risen 29% over the same period. To be sure, StoneX head of market analysis Rhona O'Connell pointed out that silver is "notoriously volatile and it is fully capable of dropping" as sharply as it rises. "This is not necessarily a false move," O'Connell said, "but it is now heavily overbought and should, as always when silver does this sort of thing, be treated with caution." You've almost certainly heard the name (and of the various misdeeds) of Lindsey Graham if you've been politically conscious at any point since 2003. That's the year he was sworn into the US Senate, representing his home state of South Carolina. He's held the seat ever since. Senator Graham gained more national recognition during President Donald Trump's first campaign, widely and publicly criticizing him before pulling a complete 180 and defending many of his political moves over the last decade. Graham is currently serving his fourth term, but he's up for reelection next year. That's where Dr. Annie Andrews, a South Carolina doctor, comes in. She's running as a Democrat for Lindsey Graham's seat. She previously sought to defeat incumbent Republican Nancy Mace in the 2022 race for South Carolina's District 1 House seat, but was unsuccessful. I could list out her policies, but she does it best in a campaign announcement that's gone viral across platforms. She starts the video by saying she's been a pediatrician in South Carolina for nearly two decades, trusted by parents "to treat their kids for just about anything you can imagine." She then pulls out a series of X-rays of children with different medical conditions, each to highlight a specific point about her views. First is a child with measles pneumonia, "a condition easily prevented by vaccines," she says. "This is a kid with cancer. One of the diseases the NIH doesn't have the funding to study anymore," Dr. Andrews continues, showing more X-rays. "And this is a kid who's been shot. Which, despite being the number one cause of death for children in America, is no longer classified as a public health crisis." Tesla Stock Falls 5% As Feud Between Trump And Musk Escalates
Shares of Tesla dropped by more than 5% on Thursday as Elon Musk amplified criticism on President Donald Trump's policy bill, with Trump later telling reporters at the White House he is unsure about the future of their relationship, suggesting the world's wealthiest person's criticism of his signature bill amounts to 'Trump derangement syndrome.' Musk has called to 'kill' Trump's policy bill, criticizing the legislation as 'massive, outrageous' ... More and 'pork-filled.' Tesla's stock fell 5.8% to around $312.60 as of around 12:35 p.m. EDT on Thursday, with losses accelerating following Trump's comment after a decline of more than 3.5% on Wednesday. Through more than a dozen posts on X since Tuesday, Musk has referred to Trump's policy bill as 'massive, outrageous' and 'pork-filled,' while adding, 'shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong.' Musk's latest criticism of the bill Thursday targeted Trump for the first time, as Musk wrote 'wise words' in response to a tweet from Trump in 2013, in which Trump said, 'I cannot believe the Republicans are extending the debt ceiling—I am a Republican & I am embarrassed!'
