Sophie Habboo hits back after cruel backlash and nepotism accusations over her new Radio 1 job with Jamie Laing
Some listeners had threatened to switch off as they slammed the latest hiring by bosses Mic Drop Sophie Habboo hits back after cruel backlash and nepotism accusations over her new Radio 1 job with Jamie Laing SOPHIE Habboo has hit back at cruel backlash and nepotism accusations over her new BBC Radio 1 job with Jamie Laing. Station fans had previously threatened to switch off as they slammed the decision to put Made In Chelsea star Sophie, 30, on the airwaves as "gross". Sharing an expert from an i article to Instagram, Sophie wrote on her Stories today: "Thank you @carsonsarah @theipaper. "I've been reflecting on my first week of Radio 1 and it's been such a surreal experience to connect with the nation. I love it!!!" Chief Culture Writer Sarah Carson had praised Sophie in her opinion piece, claiming - while her hiring may not be "fair - the reality star still "deserved" her place. Advertisement She wrote: "The primary function of Radio 1 in the afternoons is providing a bit of distraction, energy, and silliness as people leave work or school. "It's not supposed to be challenging, or specialist - it's low-stakes, unwind, chatty stuff that needs someone sparky on the mic between the pre-made playlists. "Habboo is likeable, a sharp wit, withering, quick to laugh, and sweet. She's smart, comfortable being open about her relationship, self-effacing, and happy to indulge a bit of nonsense (she needs to be, being married to Laing). "She feels like a friend - the kind who gives you tough love while giving your arm a gentle squeeze - and she's got charisma. That counts for a lot more than skill and experience in this landscape." Advertisement Her comments were a far cry from some listeners, who had slammed the latest hiring by bosses. On the official social media account of BBC Radio 1, fans flocked to the comments section as they claimed the station has "fallen" in standards. Vick Hope finally reveals pregnancy - and date she's going on maternity leave from BBC Radio One One disgruntled listener fumed: "How far we've fallen from Vick and Jordan…" A second exclaimed: "There is something really gross, about two such privileged and independently wealthy (the Laings)given access to prime time national radio shows over people who have trained and studied for years in media." Advertisement "Please get some good DJs back in the drive time slot. It's getting embarrassing," stated a third user. While someone else raged: "Wealthy Reality stars just being handed roles for nothing now. They're sooo unrelatable." And a fifth added: "Im a big radio 1 fan but shouldve been jerry .....jamie and sophie is a bad move be a switch off for me sorry." Many longtime fans of the station directly blamed bosses for a decline as they hired "influencers". Advertisement They slammed the decision not to look for upcoming talent or give the role to an existing cover presenter who has trained for the job "for years". Another fan noted: "Where is the dislike button? "There are so many hard working and capable presenters covering gigs on R1 atm, how undermining that they weren't given the chance to show the listeners what they're capable of!!" Someone else agreed" "Really glad I'm not the only one who was disappointed by this update. Advertisement "It really doesn't sit right with me when there's people trying so hard to get a break. It's a no from me I'm afraid." Please get some good DJs back in the drive time slot. It's getting embarrassing Radio 1 fan While another added: "I think I'll be finding a different radio station to listen to for my 'going home' slot in the week now. "Something just doesn't sit right with me, that his wife has got the job… when there must be some amazing local talent & those that have worked really hard in the industry that will have been overlooked for celebrity privilege…" One more fan stated: "Radio 1 turning into a constant influencer podcast.. what happened to actually knowing music to being a radio DJ! Many years of listening, only holding on for Greg! Time to switch!" Vernon Kay urges BBC colleagues not to call HR after cheeky remark leaves them stunned
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Vernon Kay has pleaded with his BBC Radio 2 colleagues not to contact HR after making an "awkward" comment about the weather. The UK was basking in glorious sunshine last month, with the the Environment Agency even declaring drought status for the north-west of England following the driest start to spring in 69 years. However, the weather has turned for most of the country since the beginning of June, with the Met Office warning that a large area of the UK is set to be struck by fierce thunderstorms on Saturday, according to the Mirror. The recent wet weather has not gone unnoticed by Radio 2 host Vernon, who told his BBC colleague Scott Mills that he had an unfortunate moment while discussing the rain with the production team. (Image: Instagram) He said: "We were talking about the age gap between us on-air and the production team. Had a bit of an awkward moment this morning. You know the weather's turned, it's raining outside. I said to the Radio 2 team, a lot of desks on your left hand side, 'Hi team, morning news team, ooo the weather's changed. "And someone said 'Yeah it's horrible'. So I said 'Outside it's raining but inside it's wet', East 17. Didn't go down very well. I'm like 'Before you get onto HR, it's East 17." The lyrics in question come from the title song of East 17's second studio album 'Steam', which was released in the UK on October 17, 1994 by London Records. The album was certified 2× Platinum in the UK. However, with the song being released over 30 years ago, it seems that many of the BBC's production staff were unaware of the lyrics, before Scott came up with an idea. (Image: Getty Images for Great British Racing) Scott said: "Well, you should have checked it by me first and then gone to the office, do it the other way round next time. Come and check with me the phrase before you say it to the whole office." Last week, Vernon admitted to listeners that he was feeling a 'bit ropey' after enjoying BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend. During the show, the 51-year-old confessed that he suffers from a seafood allergy. It means Vernon is unable to eat prawns or cockles - a type of small edible shellfish. He says he discovered the allergy after undergoing a test. Vernon said: 'Radio 1, how are you feeling? A bit ropey, no, honestly, terrible, I'm sure I've eaten a prawn or a cockle. I'm allergic to cockles."

Rita Ora reveals secrets of her sexiest single yet – including what its VERY raunchy lyrics mean
RITA Ora is back – and she's feeling sexier than ever. Sitting down with Bizarre's Jack as she drops her new single Heat today, the singer says: 'I wanted to really celebrate my sexuality and the way I am as a woman. 3 3 'My last album was so different, it was about my love life and getting married. 'But with this next lot of music I wanted it to be so carefree and back to how I was coming up in the industry. 'I wanted to celebrate everything I have become. 'It's not super deep, just fun.' Rita certainly doesn't hold back on Heat, with racy lyrics including: 'Sex on sight, anywhere you like. Inside or outside.' Another line has Rita singing: 'Only one thing I need. Your heat on me.' Keen not to put words into her mouth, I ask Rita what she means and she gives a cheeky laugh, explaining it's not just about getting down and dirty. 'It's the need of it happening right now, in this moment,' Rita says. 'It's the idea that I want it on right now or I don't want to hear about it. 'It's that simple. I think that comes from the excitement of the song. Sex confessions of the rich and famous 'I wanted it to feel instant and to have an impact. 'It is a brave, straight-up demand that you can use in any way you want.' As for her own love life, Rita is happily married to Hollywood director Taika Waititi and even three years after they married, she is still in the honeymoon phase, adding: 'I feel in a really great happy place right now.' She is now turning her hand to playing Cupid with her pals so they find 'the one', telling me not to only go for 'your type on paper'. Rita adds: 'I have never really had a type, I have never really thought of it like that. 'It's always been about the person. 'I've never cancelled anyone out as they don't fit my perfect list of what I think's perfect. 'You don't really know until you meet someone who takes you by surprise. Being open may surprise you. "That would be my advice. 'It's helped a lot of my friends and now I see them and they are really happy, but admit they'd have never gone for that person.' This weekend, Rita will perform Heat for the first time at WorldPride in Washington and her fans heading to Capital's SummerTime Ball on June 15 will hear it there too. 'Always nervous' And after five years, a UK tour also looks to be just around the corner. Rita says: 'My favourite thing is performing live. 'The fact I can still say I get to do it is a blessing. 'I am really lucky. 'I'm supporting Ricky Martin on tour and hopefully next year my own tour. 'There is a lot happening. 'I'm hitting the ground running. 'My time off is usually around Christmas.' For now, she is focusing on her new music and the follow-up to her last album You & I, which reached No6 in the charts when she released it in 2023. 'I am always nervous as it's new music,' Rita says. 'Its like having a baby. 'You put it out into the world and you can't control how it's digested. 'You put so much effort into one thing and then you have to learn how to let it go.'
