Tony Awards 2025 Full and Final Winners List: ‘Purpose' wins best new play; Branden Jacobs-Jenkins makes history

Time of Indiaa day ago

At the 2025 Tony Awards held on Sunday night, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Purpose took home the prestigious Best New Play trophy, capping off a landmark year for the acclaimed playwright.
The drawing-room drama about a successful Black family confronting buried truths during a snowed-in gathering has already won the Pulitzer Prize, and its triumph at the Tonys marks a rare double honour.
Jacobs-Jenkins made history as the first Black playwright to win Best New Play at the Tonys since August Wilson's Fences in 1987. Just a year ago, Jacobs-Jenkins won the Tony for Best Revival of a Play for Appropriate.
In his acceptance speech, he urged audiences and the industry to support regional theatre, noting that Purpose was developed in Chicago.
Another milestone moment came for Kara Young, who became the first Black performer to win two Tony Awards in consecutive years. She earned the Featured Actress in a Play award for her role in Purpose, making it her fourth consecutive Tony nomination. Young gave thanks to her parents, Jacobs-Jenkins, her fellow cast members, and director Phylicia Rashad.

Australian actress Sarah Snook won Leading Actress in a Play for her demanding performance in The Picture of Dorian Gray, where she plays all 26 characters. 'I don't feel alone any night that I do this show,' she said, crediting her team on and off stage.
In the Best Actor in a Play category, downtown cabaret star Cole Escola beat out Hollywood names including George Clooney and Daniel Dae Kim for their outrageous portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary!.
The play's director, Sam Pinkleton, also won Best Direction and thanked Escola for inspiring him to "do what you love, not what you think people want to see."
Francis Jue won Best Featured Actor in a Play for Yellow Face, wearing a tuxedo gifted by another Asian actor in solidarity. In an emotional speech, he said, 'I'm only here because of the encouragement and inspiration of generations of wonderful, deserving Asian artists who came before me,' adding, 'To those who don't feel seen—I see you.'
In the musical categories, British actor Jak Malone won Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his gender-bending role in Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical. Malone, who plays a woman in each performance, used his platform to advocate for trans rights.
Jonathan Spector's Eureka Day, a sharply written satire about liberal parents clashing over a school's vaccine policy, won Best Revival of a Play. Originally staged off-Broadway in 2019, the play found new resonance in today's post-pandemic world.
The night also included a show-stopping moment from the original cast of Hamilton, who reunited for a special medley to celebrate the musical's 10th anniversary. Dressed in all black, Lin-Manuel Miranda and his castmates performed fan favourites like 'My Shot,' 'The Schuyler Sisters,' and 'The Room Where It Happens,' marking a decade of cultural impact on Broadway.

‘Edagaiye Apaghatakke Karana' trailer: Diganth returns; Four murders, one accident

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Kannada cinema's charming star Diganth Manchale is back, this time in a quirky black comedy titled 'Edagaiye Apaghatakke Karana' (translated as The Reason for the Left-Handed Accident). Directed by Samarth B Kadkol, the film blends murder, mystery, and humour in a plot where nothing—and no one—is what they seem. The newly released trailer hints at a refreshingly quirky storyline that centers on four murders and a mysterious accident — all somehow connected to the main character's unusual struggle of being left-handed in a world designed for right-handers. Diganth as Lohit Rajesh: A leftie caught in chaos Diganth steps into the role of Lohit Rajesh, a techie who kicks off the trailer with an odd but attention-grabbing revelation — he's involved in four murders and one accident. But according to him, none of it is really his fault. His explanation? Being left-handed in a right-handed world naturally leads to 'accidents.' It's a strange premise, but one that instantly sets the tone for a film packed with oddball humour, unexpected twists, and plenty of chaos. The story leans heavily on situational comedy while keeping a layer of suspense alive throughout. (Hats off to Left Hand Lohit After a long time, a good film has come to Kannada. Our childhood star pair, Diganth and Nidhi Subbaiah, are back together on the silver screen.)' Another one wrote, 'This is how trailer should be. .. Kathe nu bitkod'de, curiosity build madide.. Kannadadalli olle trailer cut madalla anta ansodu... Finally they did it!. This movie should become superhit!.' Diganth's massive comeback is on cards The film also marks a reunion between Diganth and Nidhi Subbaiah, a pair that charmed audiences with the cult romantic hit Pancharangi in 2010. Over a decade later, their screen presence still holds nostalgic value for fans. Meanwhile, Diganth appears to be establishing himself as the go-to face for quirky roles, with recent films like 'Bachelor Party' and 'Powder'. 'Edagaiye Apaghatakke Karana', set to release in theatres on June 13, could be another feather in his cap, and the expectations are quite high.

CA-turned-famous movie director Shekhar Kapur says his cook taught him one of the most invaluable lessons of his life

In an era dominated by science, spectacle, and streaming documentaries, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur stumbled upon a profound truth—not in a lab or lecture hall, but in his London kitchen. What began as an innocent moment of nostalgia while rewatching the 50th anniversary of the moon landing turned into an eye-opening exchange with his cook, Suresh, that left the acclaimed director questioning not the science of space, but the philosophy of perception itself. Kapur, in a deeply reflective Instagram post, recalled how he eagerly pointed to the television screen as historic footage of Neil Armstrong's iconic 'one small step' played out. Expecting admiration, he instead got quiet scepticism from Suresh, who, rooted in spiritual belief, expressed doubt. 'How could man land on the moon? I worship the Moon,' he said, firmly separating scientific fact from sacred symbolism. The filmmaker took Suresh to the British Science Museum , hoping to replace disbelief with empirical evidence—replicas of Apollo 11 , space suits, and all. But even after the visit, Suresh smiled and softly responded, 'Yes, sir, man went to the moon… but to your moon, not mine.' That quiet reply shifted something in Kapur. In that moment, he realised he wasn't just debating facts—he was witnessing the beauty of subjective truth. 'I had just been given the greatest lesson in Quantum Physics ,' Kapur wrote. 'The universe is as you observe it to be.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Indonesia (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo View this post on Instagram A post shared by @shekharkapur The story ends with Suresh returning to the kitchen to cook his signature Saturday-night fish curry—unshaken in his belief, and quietly, perhaps unknowingly, having delivered a philosophical masterclass that blurs the line between spirituality and science . Kapur's post has since resonated widely, reminding readers that perception shapes reality—and that even the moon, in all its distant glory, might look different depending on who's looking. Netizens react One user called the post profound, dedicating it to teachers around the world and expressing a desire to know where Suresh is now. Another reflected on the deeper implications of the story, questioning who truly decides what is rational. A third simply appreciated the storytelling, describing it as perfectly expressed. About Apollo Landing On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 fulfilled President John F. Kennedy's goal of landing humans on the moon and returning them safely to Earth. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon. Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon, followed by Aldrin. They planted a U.S. flag, collected lunar samples, and returned on July 24. Armstrong's words—'one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind'—became an iconic moment in history. About Shekhar Kapur's work Shekhar Kapur has delivered some of the most memorable films like Masoom, Mr India, and Dil Se (as a producer). His last directorial is What's Love Got to Do with It? Meanwhile, on the acting front, he was last seen in the Tamil film, Vishwaroopam II.
