Tony Awards 2025 Full and Final Winners List: ‘Purpose' wins best new play; Branden Jacobs-Jenkins makes history

Time of India2 days ago

At the 2025 Tony Awards held on Sunday night, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' Purpose took home the prestigious Best New Play trophy, capping off a landmark year for the acclaimed playwright.
The drawing-room drama about a successful Black family confronting buried truths during a snowed-in gathering has already won the Pulitzer Prize, and its triumph at the Tonys marks a rare double honour.
Jacobs-Jenkins made history as the first Black playwright to win Best New Play at the Tonys since August Wilson's Fences in 1987. Just a year ago, Jacobs-Jenkins won the Tony for Best Revival of a Play for Appropriate.
In his acceptance speech, he urged audiences and the industry to support regional theatre, noting that Purpose was developed in Chicago.
Another milestone moment came for Kara Young, who became the first Black performer to win two Tony Awards in consecutive years. She earned the Featured Actress in a Play award for her role in Purpose, making it her fourth consecutive Tony nomination. Young gave thanks to her parents, Jacobs-Jenkins, her fellow cast members, and director Phylicia Rashad.

Australian actress Sarah Snook won Leading Actress in a Play for her demanding performance in The Picture of Dorian Gray, where she plays all 26 characters. 'I don't feel alone any night that I do this show,' she said, crediting her team on and off stage.
In the Best Actor in a Play category, downtown cabaret star Cole Escola beat out Hollywood names including George Clooney and Daniel Dae Kim for their outrageous portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary!.
The play's director, Sam Pinkleton, also won Best Direction and thanked Escola for inspiring him to "do what you love, not what you think people want to see."
Francis Jue won Best Featured Actor in a Play for Yellow Face, wearing a tuxedo gifted by another Asian actor in solidarity. In an emotional speech, he said, 'I'm only here because of the encouragement and inspiration of generations of wonderful, deserving Asian artists who came before me,' adding, 'To those who don't feel seen—I see you.'
In the musical categories, British actor Jak Malone won Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his gender-bending role in Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical. Malone, who plays a woman in each performance, used his platform to advocate for trans rights.
Jonathan Spector's Eureka Day, a sharply written satire about liberal parents clashing over a school's vaccine policy, won Best Revival of a Play. Originally staged off-Broadway in 2019, the play found new resonance in today's post-pandemic world.
The night also included a show-stopping moment from the original cast of Hamilton, who reunited for a special medley to celebrate the musical's 10th anniversary. Dressed in all black, Lin-Manuel Miranda and his castmates performed fan favourites like 'My Shot,' 'The Schuyler Sisters,' and 'The Room Where It Happens,' marking a decade of cultural impact on Broadway.

Dutch beach beasts find a final resting place in a new exhibition

Dutch artist Theo Jansen is interviewed in front of his 'strandbeesten' or Beach Beasts, wind-powered creatures made from yellow plastic tubes, displayed during an exhibit in Delft, Netherlands, Thursday, June 5, 2025. (AP Photo/Peter Dejong) The famous wind-powered beach beasts have scuttled along the Dutch North Sea coast, into a swanky Miami art show and even onto "The Simpsons." Now. they have a final resting place in a Dutch city most famous for "Girl with a Pearl Earring" painter Johannes Vermeer and blue-painted pottery. The "bones" of Theo Jansen's "strandbeesten" - beach animals in Dutch - have taken over a former cable factory in Delft, the small city in the western Netherlands that Jansen has called home for decades. "During the years, there has been a sort of evolutionary history, you could say. And you could see these animals as sort of natural historical objects," the 77-year old artist told The Associated Press before the installation's opening. The Strandbeesten Mortuary, as the exhibition is called, follows the various versions of the mobile sculptures since 1990 when Jansen created the first one from plastic pipes and tape. As the animals evolved, Jansen incorporated plastic bottles, wooden planks, cloth and cardboard. The life and death cycle of these famous animals - formed mostly out of PVC pipes - has left behind an impressive fossil record, which is on display at the exhibition. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Marloes Koster, who organized the exhibition for Delft's Prinsenhof Museum, said that Jansen's ultimate goal is to create a beast that will live forever. "He's not there yet, so these are the ones that didn't make it," she added. The museum is undergoing major renovations, so Koster and her colleagues have been putting together arts and culture events at alternative venues around the city while the building is shut. Born near the North Sea, Jansen grew up captivated by the wind that often hits the Dutch coastline. He harnessed it to allow his animals to "walk" along the beach. Every year, he creates a new strandbeest and, at the end of the summer, declares the animal dead. "All summer I do experiments, and in the fall I'm a little bit wiser (about) how these animals should survive in the future," Jansen said. Many of the visitors to the opening of the exhibition had followed Jansen's work for years and were keen to understand how the strandbeesten had changed over time. "You see a kind of development in the way he does things. So they start out very simple, and then it gets increasingly complicated. So they evolve," said Cor Nonhof, a Delft local who had come to see the exhibition with his wife. Even at the opening, Jansen was already keen to return to the beach to work on the latest evolution of his strandbeesten. "I cannot do anything else," Jansen said. "And I am very happy with that.

Serena Williams drawn into debate over husband Alexis Ohanian's comments post Grand Slam 2025

After witnessing one of the most grueling matches in recent Grand Slam history—the semifinal showdown between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner—Alexis Ohanian, entrepreneur and husband of tennis legend Serena Williams, offered a candid opinion on social media. His statement, seemingly simple, stirred a flurry of fan reactions and rekindled a long-standing debate in tennis: the relevance of the five-set format in men's matches. While many stood by the endurance and drama of the Alcaraz–Sinner match, Ohanian raised a different point—about tension, pacing, and viewer engagement. 'I think we're playing a completely different sport': Why did Ohanian's comments spark debate in the tennis world In a post that went viral within hours, Alexis Ohanian wrote: 'I first got into tennis because of the women's game. I fell in love with how every point mattered. Then I watched my first 5 set men's match and was confused why this diluted the tension — these early sets felt more like warm-ups than high stakes.' 'I understand the history of 5 sets in men's Grand Slam tennis — but from an entertainment standpoint, I prefer the format where every point matters more.' The timing of the post—just after Alcaraz defeated Sinner in a five-hour French Open battle—drew significant attention from fans and sports media. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologists: Losing a Hanging Tummy Comes Down To This 1 Thing Health Wellness Journal Learn more Undo While many praised Ohanian for highlighting the compact intensity of the women's three-set matches, others argued that the very endurance and momentum shifts of five-set tennis are what make men's Grand Slam clashes legendary. The topic also touched deeper issues. According to Wikipedia and other sources, the men's five-set format has long been seen as a benchmark for stamina and psychological resilience. On the other hand, critics argue that the women's game often delivers greater drama in a shorter span. Serena Williams herself, one of the greatest in the sport, once commented in a 2013 interview: 'I think we're playing a completely different sport. ' Ohanian, known for championing equal pay and investing in women's sports, likely intended to elevate the unique strengths of the women's format—not downplay the men's. However, as many fans saw it, the timing of his comments—coinciding with one of the most thrilling men's matches in recent memory—sparked misunderstanding. Ohanian's words tapped into more than just format preferences; they reignited a conversation about how we experience tennis. For some, the lengthy tension of five-set matches builds storylines and epic comebacks. For others, the condensed format of the women's game offers faster emotional payoffs. The truth may lie somewhere in between. Rather than choose one over the other, perhaps it's time tennis embraces the idea that greatness comes in many forms—whether it's decided in three sets or five. What's certain is that the sport, like its fans, thrives on passion—and debates like this keep it evolving.

The upcoming fiction and thriller drama film 'Omniscient Reader: The Prophet' has been creating a lot of buzz amongst fans. The star cast, along with the interesting and unique plot, has managed to woo fans all around; however, some controversy has still managed to follow the project. Major changes in the film compared to the webtoon it has been adapted from have concerned fans, especially regarding Blackpink Jisoo's character, who, instead of originally wielding a sword, is seen using a gun in the teaser. Her absence from the film's recent briefing has also sparked concerns amongst fans about the idol's future. Blackpink member Jisoo missing from the film briefing event As per online announcements, the briefing for the film 'Omniscient Reader: The Prophet' is to be held on June 17. The venue, as well as the announcement for ticket sales, was also shared online. Fans were originally excited to meet the star cast of the film; however, it was also announced that out of everyone, only Jisoo would be unable to attend the event due to scheduling conflicts. Many expressed their disappointment over the issue and cited that her company should have planned better in advance to ensure that the idol was able to attend all events like this. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Fans of Jisoo and Blackpink show concern over the matter One commented how group schedules and conflicts always cause a hindrance in the idol's solo activities and that she should've been allowed to be part of the briefing. More about 'Omniscient Reader: The Prophet' 'Omniscient Reader: The Prophet' is a thriller and fantasy drama that blends themes of magical realism to present the audience with a unique story. This is also Jisoo's film debut, as most of her filmography has consisted of starring in drama series and music videos. The film's premise follows Dok Ja, the only dedicated reader of a long-running novel. The lines between fantasy and reality start to blur for her when events in the book also start happening in her real life.
