Hawaii, worldwide love pouring in for Dakota Briley's recovery

Yahoo18-06-2025
HONOLULU (KHON2) — A young man on Oahu is fighting for his life after he was crushed by a car while he was standing on the side of the road. His loved ones have received an outpouring of support since the crash on Saturday, June 14.
20-year-old Dakota Briley was unloading surfboards on the North Shore of Oahu near Chun's Beach on Saturday when the unthinkable happened. Police said an 18-year-old man was driving westbound on Kamehameha Highway when he crossed into the eastbound lane and hit Briley, pinning him between two vehicles on the shoulder of the road.
Briley is currently hospitalized at Queen's Medical Center, but his loved ones are clinging to hope — even in the darkest moments.
'I didn't want to believe it. I was in denial. And then I found out details. My friend was first there on the scene, and he was like, 'it's really bad,'' said Jason Magallanes, a longtime Briley family friend. 'But the good news is, I overheard the doctor saying yesterday that the bleeding and swelling stopped in his head, and there's some excessive bleeding in his hips, or pelvis, as well and they put that together, and they stop the bleeding with that.'
Dakota also suffered fractures to his legs, skull, ribs and spine. His road to recovery is far from clear, but those that know him best said he has always been a warrior.

'Working out, surfing, eating right. He's huge on diet, you know, 'Do the right thing and put the right stuff in your body and take care of your body.' And that's why I know he's strong. He's in a good position. And he's going to pull through but we do need prayers,' said longtime Briley Family Friend Tanoai Reed.
'If anybody is going to make it out of this, it's going to be the Dakota,' Magallanes said. 'He's stubborn. He has a fire and, he's a warrior.'
Friends and family said the support has poured in from across Hawaii and the globe — over $130,000 have been raised on the GoFundMe for Dakota's medical expenses.
Loved ones told KHON2 that Dakota will undergo a major surgery at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17 where doctors will operate on his severely-damaged spine — they are still confident that continued prayers from the public and help from the doctors inside Queen's will see him through.
'Dakota, uncle loves you,' Reed said. 'You're going to make it through this. And, you know, no matter what happens afterwards, we're going to be there together and you got a huge, long life ahead of you.'
'Dakota, I love you. Just keep fighting and I know, I know God's going to heal you,' Magallanes said. 'The love is real overwhelming and, and we're all here for you.'

Police said speed, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.

Surfer Escapes 'Savage' Shark Attack with Surfboard Bitten in Two: 'A Miracle No One Was Injured'

Brad Ross was surfing in New South Wales, Australia, when a great white shark took a large bite out of his board NEED TO KNOW A shark attacked surfer Brad Ross while he was surfing at Cabarita Beach in Australia on Monday, Aug. 18 Ross escaped the attack unscathed, but his surfboard was left in two pieces after being bitten by the shark, according to local media outlets The attack came weeks after a shark attacked a 16-year-old boy at the same beach, PEOPLE previously reported A surfer in Australia survived a shark attack unscathed — but the same can't be said about his surfboard. On Monday, Aug. 18, Brad Ross was surfing at Cabarita Beach in New South Wales, Australia, around 7:30 a.m.. when a great white shark took a large bite out of his board, according to The Sydney Morning Herald and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). In a video shared on social media, Ross was seen splashing in the ocean near the shore amid the incident, per 10 News. He then left the water with his board two pieces and the equipment missing a large chunk of foam. The 5-meter shark has since been caught and released, according to the outlet. In footage, Ross appeared unharmed as he held up his surfboard in two piecess, per ABC and 'Lifeguards on the Far North Coast closed Cabarita Beach on the NSW Far North Coast today after a surfer's board was bitten on Monday morning, 18 August," a spokesperson from Surf Live Saving NSW told PEOPLE. They added, 'It comes less than two months after a boy was bitten by a shark at the same location.' 'Just after 8am this morning (Monday 18 August) the Surf Life Saving NSW State Operations Centre (SOC) was alerted to an incident at the unpatrolled Cabarita Beach which was called in through Triple 0,' a statement from the organization read. They continued, 'It's believed a surfer's board was bitten by a shark. The surfer is unharmed.' 'Australian Lifeguard Service lifeguards were tasked and immediately worked with Council to close the beach and put up signage to warn the public not to enter the water,' the statement added. 'SLSNSW UAV assets were used for the rest of the day to observe the beach as a safety precaution.' The incident was also attended to by NSW Police and the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), according to ABC. In response to PEOPLE's request for comment, New South Wales Police said they had no oversight over the incident as it didn't result in a fatality. PEOPLE has contacted NSW Primary Industries and Regional Development for comment. Surf Lifesaving Far North Coast's Dave Rope spoke about how Ross was lucky to have escaped the attack. "Very, very lucky, I'd be going out and buying a lottery ticket today, I think, if I was them," Rope told ABC. "I would just say that it is a miracle that no one was injured physically from it." "It's quite a savage bite and large, it's split in two. There's no doubt that is probably from the force of the bite," he added. Local yoga teacher Kym Falvey also opened up about the incident after watching the event unfold. "The man was sitting on his board and the shark literally bit the board behind his butt," Falvey told ABC. "The board just popped, like it exploded, and it flew up in the air and by this time there was a man up on the rocks going, 'Oi, come in,' she added. She concluded, "The last time the shark came right into the shallows, so the surfers in the water were saying, 'We didn't want to stop paddling until we got onto the dry sand.' PEOPLE previously reported In June that a 16-year-old boy suffered serious injuries to his right arm, wrist and leg after being attacked by a shark at the same beach. Other surfers then pulled the boy to safety using a surfboard before he was rushed to the hospital. The beach was also closed after the attack, per Read the original article on People

Shohei Ohtani is caught in a financial controversy — again

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. In the last year, Shohei Ohtani has become as famous for the financial scandals surrounding him as he has for his ability to slug baseballs. Now the Los Angeles Dodgers superstar is embroiled in yet another financial scandal, this time involving allegations made about a real estate deal in Hawaii. In addition, Ohtani continues to deal with blowback from a gambling fraud incident that landed his interpreter a nearly five-year prison sentence. 'Threats and baseless legal claims' The latest scandal involves two Hawaiian real estate developers who are suing Ohtani and his agent. The lawsuit claims that Ohtani's agent, Nez Balelo, got the developers "fired from a $240 million luxury housing development [the Vista at Mauna Kea] on the Big Island's coveted Hapuna Coast that they brought [Ohtani] in to endorse" and build a home in, said The Associated Press. Balelo "increasingly demanded concessions" from the developers before allegedly "demanding that their business partner, Kingsbarn Realty Capital, drop them from the deal," said the AP. Ohtani and Balelo "exploited their celebrity leverage to destabilize and ultimately dismantle" the developers' "role in the project — for no reason other than their own financial self-interest," the lawsuit claims. The pair allegedly "used threats and baseless legal claims to force a business partner to betray its contractual obligations and strip Plaintiffs of the very project they conceived and built." The lawsuit is "completely frivolous and without merit," Kingsbarn told the AP in a statement. The company added that it "takes full responsibility" for removing the developers. Ohtani himself said he was "focused on what the team is doing" when asked about the lawsuit. Another scandal for Ohtani This is the second major financial scandal for Ohtani, who is widely considered one of the best baseball players in the world. His ex-interpreter was "sentenced to 57 months in prison for stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani," said ESPN, in a controversy that had some initially questioning Ohtani despite his denial of any knowledge. This also comes in the aftermath of Balelo being "behind Ohtani's free agent deal with the Dodgers, which is one of the most lucrative — and management-friendly — contracts in MLB history," said NBC News. At the time, the deal was "reported to be the biggest contract in baseball history, at $700 million for 10 seasons." He is also set to earn "$100 million in endorsements in 2025 alone, tops among MLB players," said The Athletic. But despite the controversy around his finances, the lawyers currently suing him have "left the door open for Ohtani to have once again been a victim of someone in his inner circle bringing him legal trouble," said SFGate. It is "uncertain at this time whether his agent's alleged contractual interference and misdeeds were even known to Mr. Ohtani at the time, or whether he may have himself been misled by Mr. Balelo — but we aim to find out," attorneys for the developers said to the outlet. The status of the deal is unclear, but Ohtani's interest in Hawaii has been longstanding; The Wall Street Journal first reported in 2024 that he was looking to build a home in the state, which is a "beautiful blend of Pacific Ocean cultures" and a "special place — a place I will soon call home," Ohtani said in a press release. The Vista at Mauna Kea's website still lists Ohtani as "our first resident."

Maui officer killed in line of duty, police chief calls her ‘the finest of us'

A Maui police officer was shot and killed Friday while responding to reports of a person firing a rifle in the area of the old sugar mill, according to police and reports. The officer, who has not been identified, was fatally struck in Paia, located on the northern coast of the island of Maui, Hawaii, the Maui Police Department said in a statement. The suspect, who also has not been named, has been taken into custody. "The Maui Police Department is deeply saddened to confirm that earlier this evening, one of our officers was fatally injured in an officer-involved shooting," the brief statement reads. "This is a tragic loss for our department and our community. Out of respect for the officer's family and loved ones, we are not releasing further details at this time. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available. We ask for the community's patience and support as we work through this difficult time together." Maui Police Chief John Pelletier told Hawaii News Now that officers responded to an illegal shooting call in the area of the old sugar mill when they encountered the suspect who was firing what police believe to be a rifle. "Our officer suffered a round in her chest area. Officers returned fire. The subject was shot in the lower hip area and is in custody," Pelletier said. Pelletier called the officer a true hero of the community and within the profession. "She was the finest of us, and we are grateful for her," he said. "This is an absolute tragedy. This is a dark day in the history of the Maui Police Department and our community." "It's something that none of us ever expect will happen, although we prepare for it, and it's just absolutely horrible," he said. Fox News Digital has reached out to Maui police for additional information.
