Influential leaders to convene at Energy Asia 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The 'Energy Asia 2025' conference, themed 'Delivering Asia's Energy Transition', from June 16 to 18, will be an opportune moment for Malaysia and the region to take stock of progress made towards energy transition objectives and reinforce national commitments to achieving net-zero goals.
The conference is timely, coming at a critical juncture in economic diversification and sustainable development, as nations transition from traditional oil to renewable energy and embrace new technologies such as hydrogen and carbon capture.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to deliver a keynote address and officiate the event, which will feature 180 globally renowned speakers and attract over 4,000 delegates, including policymakers, energy professionals and industry leaders.
Highlights of the conference include a plenary session on 'Energy Present, Energy Future: Pathways for Asia's Just Transition', followed by a leadership dialogue on 'Energy at the Crossroads: Policies, Technologies and Investments'.
There will also be a closed-door gathering of global chief executive officers (CEOs) and C-suite leaders from key sectors, including oil and gas, energy, technology, finance and professional services.
The aim is to forge collective pathways that unlock investment, strengthen coordination and accelerate the deployment of technologies to advance Asia's energy transition.
By bringing together high-ranking corporate and ministerial figures, the conference will address Asia's key energy issues across seven themes: geopolitics, market strategies, power transition, technology and innovation, capital markets, sustainability and talent development.
Prominent officials scheduled to attend include Petronas president and group CEO and chairman of Energy Asia Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik; Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) secretary general Haitham Al Ghais; Saudi Aramco president and CEO Amin Nasser; and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) Economics & Technology Research Institute president Dr Lu Ruquan.
Complementing the executive conference is the Energy Park – an interactive experience hub designed to spark ideas, inspire action and chart the course of Asia's energy transition.
It brings together a vibrant community of technologists, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and corporate innovators.

SST expansion for imported food aimed at high-income earners, says Anwar
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the people should compare the expansion of the SST with the GST, which was even imposed on basic necessities like sugar and flour. PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has defended the government's decision to expand the scope of the sales and service tax on imported products, saying it is targeted at high-income earners. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said food items such as avocados and cod fish, which were imported, were generally purchased by the wealthy. 'If the rich want to eat avocados, then they will need to pay a little more,' he said at an event in Ipoh, Perak, today. On June 9, the finance ministry announced that a 5% to 10% rate will be imposed on non-essential goods from July 1, although basic necessities would not be taxed. Still, the announcement triggered brickbats. Other food items which will be slapped with a 5% tax include king crabs, salmon and truffles. Anwar also touched on the brouhaha over imported bananas, which were included in the revised list of items to be checked. He said locally produced bananas like pisang emas and pisang rastali would not be taxed. He urged the public to compare the expansion of the SST with the goods and services tax, which he said was even imposed on basic necessities like sugar and flour. 'Even though the rate was low, the rakyat had to bear the GST,' he said. Anwar admitted that while it was easier to implement the GST when compared to the SST, he wondered if the government should tax fishermen, small-time farmers and street sweepers. He said that whatever revenue was generated from tax collection would be used to increase the salaries of civil servants, social aid such as the 'Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah', and to develop infrastructure. Anwar said the government had allocated RM13 billion for the STR cash aid for the B40 and M40 groups to help cushion the impact of the rising cost of living. 'I really hope the public understands this,' he said.

(Facebook pic) BANGI : Asia plays a pivotal role in driving innovation and sustainable growth for energy transition, said Petroliam Nasional Bhd's (Petronas) vice-president of corporate sustainability, Charlotte Wolff-Bye. She said there is a critical need for global collaboration to accelerate energy transition. 'We talked about climate change, and this is not a core competence of the oil and gas sector. Clearly, we must collaborate across sectors – with academia, not-for-profit organisations, and also across borders. 'It's very clear that this is a global issue and a global opportunity. So we must work together,' she told reporters at a media outreach programme on energy transition and sustainability here today. Wolff-Bye was responding to a question on the importance of cooperation between China and Malaysia, as well as China and Asean, in energy transition. She said China has a critical role to play, not only as the world's largest emitter of carbon emissions, but also as a country with some of the greatest opportunities in decarbonisation. 'Of course, so much innovation and good-scale economics are coming out of China, particularly around renewables and electric vehicles. All of us will benefit from that,' she said, adding that every country must step up, though each faces its own unique trajectory and political pressures. She noted that Malaysia is well-positioned to deepen its partnership with China and other regional players in advancing sustainability goals. 'We have a very strong collaboration with China, and other countries also have robust partnerships with our Chinese counterparts. So I think this is fertile ground for further cooperation and innovation,' she said. Wolff-Bye said Petronas had signed memorandums of understanding with various partners in Southeast Asia, including China, to foster greater research and innovation. She noted that Asia's growing population and resource demands further underline the urgency of adopting sustainable practices. 'It is a golden opportunity for Asia because the region continues to grow in demographics. So, it's important. There is demand not just for energy, but also for natural resources. But we can't consume natural resources the way we used to,' she said. Wolff-Bye emphasised that ensuring energy security was a core mandate for Petronas, not only for the nation, but also for the customers it serves. 'That's why we closely monitor developments within Malaysia and work collaboratively with the entire energy ecosystem to model energy demand and determine the role we need to play. 'We are also looking at how much more domestic gas we need to produce, and whether we also need to resort to imports and so on. This is something we monitor very closely, and it's central to our core purpose because, of course, there is no economic growth without energy,' she said. The media outreach programme was organised by Petronas ahead of the Energy Asia 2025 conference, which will take place from June 16 to 18.

"MCA will remain in BN"
PORT DICKSON: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has expressed confidence that MCA will remain in the coalition, despite speculation of an internal push for the party to leave. Zahid, who is also Umno president, said MCA and MIC are key components in the formation of BN. "There's no such thing (as MCA leaving BN). "If it were happening, I'd hear it directly from MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong. "Perhaps there are movements by certain quarters; I've been told about that, but the decision of their central committee suggests otherwise. "God willing, they will remain with us in BN," said the deputy prime minister after launching the Port Dickson Umno division delegates meeting at the Fama Training Centre hall here this evening. Also present were Negri Sembilan Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias and Port Dickson Umno chief Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli. Zahid was commenting on a newspaper report regarding ongoing MCA divisional meetings, which are expected to determine whether the party will sever ties with Umno during its annual general assembly scheduled for October. The issue reportedly stems from growing dissatisfaction among MCA grassroots leaders, who feel the party has been sidelined by Umno. Zahid said MCA had struggled in the 14th and 15th general elections, having failed to retain their seats. He said Umno must treat its component party allies with respect and offer assistance when needed. "Umno must support our friends when they're in trouble. "This is the spirit of BN that we must strengthen, and I am confident our partners will continue to stand with the BN coalition," he said. On a separate matter, Zahid, who is also the rural and regional development, affirmed that BN will continue using the 'dacing' (scales) symbol in the next general election (GE16). "I have said that for GE16, we will continue to use the scales symbol, and BN component parties will be allocated seats to contest. "Though the election is still far off, that is the decision we have made," he said. On another matter, Zahid said the opposition's planned 'Turun Anwar' rally, scheduled for July 26, would not succeed. He said the plan reveals the true colours of the opposition, who had previously engaged in political betrayal and are attempting to do so again. "So we need not worry about that kind of behaviour.
