Shimla, May 17 (PTI) The Himachal Pradesh Department of Prisons & Correctional Services has secured the second position among small states for delivering justice, according to a report by the India Justice Report (IJR) 2025.
Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Sanjeev Ranjan Ojha, said that Himachal Pradesh performed especially well in the prisons category.
'This shows the state's strong and well-organised approach to prison management, particularly in terms of staffing, infrastructure improvements, and rehabilitation programmes,' he said.
DG also said that the department's key achievements include second rank among small states in delivering justice, strong performance in prison management with better staff-to-inmate ratios and lower occupancy than the national average, improvements in staffing of prison posts and attention to inmate welfare following the Model Prison Manual and its ongoing focus on healthcare, video conferencing facilities and legal aid services in prisons.
He further said that the report appreciates Himachal Pradesh for consistently improving its performance compared to previous editions of IJR, especially after Covid when many states faced challenges in continuing justice reforms. PTI COR HIG HIG

According to a ministry statement, 233 personnel have been awarded the Medal for Gallantry (GM), 99 have received the President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), and 758 have been given the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM). Among the gallantry medals, the highest number 152 were awarded to personnel involved in operations in Jammu and Kashmir, followed by 54 for anti-Naxal duties, three for the northeast region, and 24 from other areas. Additionally, "four fire service personnel and one home guard and civil defence official have also been awarded the gallantry medal," the statement said. As noted by PTI, the Medal for Gallantry is conferred for rare and conspicuous acts of bravery in saving lives, protecting property, preventing crime, or arresting criminals. The PSM is awarded for a special distinguished record in service, while the MSM is given for valuable service marked by dedication and resourcefulness.

Agency: New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) Amid relentless attacks by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over alleged voter data fudging, the Election Commission on Thursday said instead of creating false narrative by using 'dirty phrases" like 'vote chori', proof should be given. In a statement, the EC said the law for 'one person one vote" is already is existence since the first elections in 1951-1952. 'If anyone has any proof of any person actually voting twice in any election, it should be shared with ECI with a written affidavit rather than colouring all the electors of India as 'chor' without any proof," it said. The poll authority said that by trying to create a false narrative by using 'dirty phrases" like 'vote chori" for Indian electors, is not only a direct attack on the crores of Indian electors but also an assault on the integrity of lakhs of election staff. Meghalaya asks Centre to convince Bangladesh to erect fencing close to international border
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government has asked the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to convince Bangladesh for permission to erect border fencing closer to the international boundary to secure a 40 km unfenced stretch without leaving villages outside the fenced area, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said. Under international norms, border fencing is built 150 yards inside a country's territory. But in Meghalaya's case, this would result in several villages falling within "no man's land" or outside the fencing, compromising their safety, he said. "We have taken up with the MHA, urging it to convince the government of Bangladesh, because of this reality, let us go close to the main pillar of the border so that we can avoid fencing outside the village," Tynsong told PTI. Tynsong, who is also Home minister, held a meeting with top Home department officials on Wednesday to review international border security after the recent infiltration attempt and the subsequent arrests of Bangladesh nationals. According to the DyCM, such an arrangement would protect villages without putting them in harm's way. He said there are several habitations within the 40-km unfenced border that will be left exposed if fencing is constructed strictly as per international norms. The push for closer fencing follows an incident in Rongdangai village where six members of an armed gang, led by a Bangladesh Police constable, allegedly crossed into Indian territory, assaulted a local shopkeeper and looted cash and valuables. Tynsong said instructions have been issued to all deputy commissioners and superintendents of police to adopt proactive measures to prevent infiltration along the entire India-Bangla border, from East Jaintia Hills to Dalu in Garo Hills.
