Architecture student clicks on bogus ‘traffic challan' payment link, crooks siphon off Rs2 lakh from account
Pune: A third-year architecture degree course student (22) of a prominent college in Karvenagar lost Rs2.02 lakh to cybercrooks between May 17 and 18 after she received a bogus traffic challan message embedded with a link to remote access software.
The student, hailing from Wardha, currently stays in the college hostel in Karvenagar. She sometimes rides the scooter of one of her friends in the hostel. Her friend on May 17 received an "RTO challan" of Rs2,000 for traffic rule violation.
The challan did not open on the phone of the victim's friend. She then forwarded it to the victim, who had used the two-wheeler on May 16.
Senior inspector Vishwajit Kaingade of the Warje police said, "Thinking that she might have breached traffic rules while driving the scooter, the victim clicked on the payment link in it.
Immediately a remote access software got downloaded, prompting her to fill in the PIN, account number and other details to make the payment. In reality, the PIN was to gain remote access to her phone without her knowledge."
Kaingade said, "The crooks then observed her phone use and noted down the key entries. They later used the PIN and UPI application details to siphon off Rs2.02 lakh from her account through 13 transactions — all made during the night between May 17 and 18.
The student realised she was defrauded only when she woke up in the morning and saw the 13 transactions' alerts on her phone."
When TOI called the architecture student on Wednesday evening, she sought time to narrate the incident. She did not return the call till going to press.
Remote access scams involve fraudsters gaining access to a person's computer or smartphone by fraudulently installing software in it. Scamsters usually send emails or text messages with embedded links of remote access software to their targets using names of trusted organisations or public service departments.
Once a victim downloads the software after clicking on the link and enters its PIN, fraudsters gain control of the device.
They watch victims' activities and use the same details to siphon off money.
Senior police inspector Kaingade said, "The architecture student deleted the remote access software later and reported the matter to the Warje police on Tuesday. We are studying the bank account details to which the money went.

'Called For An Emergency...': 'Dedicated' Air India Employee Cut Short His Sick Leave To Join Flight
Last Updated: On the day of the tragedy, Deepak had called his mother from Ahmedabad in the morning, telling her he was about to depart for London. The Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad has thrown up various untold and heartbreaking stories, one of which is particularly poignant. Deepak Pathak, a cabin crew member with Air India, was called in for duty on June 11 due to an emergency, despite being on sick leave. He wasn't originally scheduled for the ill-fated flight on June 12, which ultimately claimed his life. His family said Deepka was a dedicated employee, adding that if he had refused to report for duty, he would be alive today. Deepak's two sisters left for Ahmedabad on Thursday. Their DNA samples were taken on Friday to help identify his body. Deepak was a resident of Katrap, Badlapur East, where he lived with his mother, father and his wife of four years. Deepak's father, Babasaheb, had retired from Central Railway 15 years prior and subsequently relocated from Mumbai to Badlapur. According to Deepak's cousin, Sachin Khadtale, Deepak had been promoted to cabin crew six months prior. He typically worked on international flights, often returning home after 10 to 15 days. Recently, when he came, his health was not good, Sachin told TOI. Deepak's elder sister Shruti said whenever Deepak went on a trip, he used to call his mother and tell her about his trip before taking the flight. On the day of the tragedy, Deepak had called his mother from Ahmedabad in the morning, telling her he was about to depart for London. That call turned out to be his last conversation with his family. When Shruti and her family heard about the crash on Thursday afternoon, they initially didn't think Deepak was on the flight. However, as his phone kept ringing unanswered, they grew worried. The situation became more alarming when his phone was eventually switched off, and they later saw his name in the cabin crew list. His inconsolable parents were not in a position to travel to Ahmedabad, and his sisters stepped in. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which crashed into a residential hostel shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport for London Gatwick, killed at least 274 people, including passengers, crew, and residents on the ground. Civil Hospital officials explained that the process is underway. Live Events 'Most of the relatives have provided samples. We also got a few foreign nationals. The DNA analysis of the human remains is also being carried out. Once the match takes place, identification will start. Then, the bodies will be handed over to the relatives,' said an official. Multiple teams have been deployed to handle the extensive procedure. 'The procedure is likely to take 48 to 72 hours. The initial identification process may start by Saturday,' the official added. For Gujarat's forensic experts, this is the greatest challenge they have faced in recent years. In the past, their teams successfully identified victims of a game zone fire in Rajkot, and now a similar effort is underway in Ahmedabad to bring closure to the affected families. (With ToI inputs)
