Qatar mediates as Trump declares end to 12-day Israel-Iran war with phased ceasefire, vows it will last 'forever'

Time of India5 hours ago

Iran and Israel have reportedly agreed to a
phased ceasefire
after nearly two weeks of escalating military conflict. The announcement came from US President Donald Trump, who credited Qatar with playing a key role in bringing the two adversaries to the table.
The ceasefire, as outlined by Trump, will begin with Iran halting its attacks, followed by Israel 12 hours later. The full cessation of hostilities is scheduled to be completed within 24 hours.
Qatar steps in as crisis peaks
The diplomatic breakthrough followed a direct request from Trump to Qatar's Emir. According to Reuters, Trump informed the Qatari ruler that Israel had accepted the ceasefire proposal and asked for Doha's help in convincing Iran.

Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani then contacted Iranian officials and secured their approval during a phone call, Reuters reported, citing a source familiar with the negotiations.
This high-level exchange happened just hours after Iran launched missiles at US military sites in Iraq and Qatar—most notably, the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American base in the region.

Trump's ceasefire blueprint
President Trump made the ceasefire public via a detailed statement on Truth Social:
'CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!'
He continued, 'Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL.'
Trump described the truce as a turning point, 'On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, 'THE 12 DAY WAR.' This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn't, and never will!'
He ended his post with a sweeping declaration, 'God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!'
Neither side has publicly responded
Despite Trump's confident announcement, there has been no official confirmation from either Israel or Iran. The Israeli military has declined to comment, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office has yet to issue a statement.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media have not acknowledged the truce. Reports from inside Iran suggest Israeli airstrikes continued Monday night around Tehran.
Trump, however, told NBC News that he expects the ceasefire to be permanent.
'I think the ceasefire is unlimited. It's going to go forever,' he said.
How the 12-day Israel-Iran war unfolded
The conflict erupted on 13 June, when Israel launched a large-scale airstrike campaign named
Operation Rising Lion
targeting Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure.
Iran retaliated swiftly. Its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps responded with Operation True Promise 3, a wave of drone and missile attacks aimed at Israeli air force fuel facilities and key energy assets.
As the fighting escalated, the US stepped in directly. In the early hours of Sunday, American forces bombed three Iranian nuclear sites in what was codenamed Operation Midnight Hammer. That strike triggered a direct Iranian missile assault on US bases in Iraq and Qatar.
White House, VP Vance back Trump announcement
While the ceasefire lacks on-ground confirmation, the White House publicly endorsed Trump's message. A photo posted on social media showed the president holding a red cap emblazoned with 'TRUMP WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING.'
US Vice President JD Vance echoed the optimism. Appearing on Fox News, he described the war as, 'an important reset moment for the entire region.'
He added, 'If they want to build a nuclear weapon in the future, they're going to have to deal with a very, very powerful American military again.'
According to Trump's post, the phased ceasefire is set to begin around midnight Tuesday (Eastern Standard Time). Iran is expected to cease hostilities first. Israel will follow 12 hours later. If all goes to plan, both sides will have fully stopped operations by Wednesday midnight.
Whether this truce marks a true end to the Israel-Iran war remains to be seen. But for now, diplomacy—backed by regional mediation and American pressure—has offered a brief pause to a conflict that risked spiralling beyond control.

Donald Trump pulls off an India-Pakistan on Israel-Iran, forcing ceasefire

US President Donald Trump (PTI photo) TOI Correspondent from Washington: US President Donald Trump did an India-Pakistan on Israel and Iran, abruptly announcing a ceasefire between the two warring countries that no one had a clue about -- least of all the two countries involved -- and had everyone wondering of it would be meaningful and lasting. The two countries were still firing missiles at each other on Monday evening when Trump announced an elaborate ceasefire on his social media platform, claiming "Israel & Iran came to me, almost simultaneously, and said, 'PEACE!' I knew the time was NOW. The World, and the Middle East, are the real WINNERS!" "Both Nations will see tremendous LOVE, PEACE, AND PROSPERITY in their futures. They have so much to gain, and yet, so much to lose if they stray from the road of RIGHTEOUSNESS & TRUTH. The future for Israel & Iran is UNLIMITED, & filled with great PROMISE," he said, in echoes of the verbal topspin he used to tamp down the India-Pakistan firefight. Even Trump's aides and administration officials appeared gobsmacked with the announcement, which the White House later said was aided by Qatar's ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. Israel seemed to have a tough time overcoming its surprise in the middle of punitive strikes even though Trump spoke to its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before going public, as did Iran, which waited three hours before its state media confirmed the deal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo Trump though owned the choreography of the ceasefire. "It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in-progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!" he wrote even before the two countries had formally agreed. He even laid out an elaborate timetable, saying, "Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL." "On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, 'THE 12 DAY WAR.' This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn't, and never will!" wrote the self-described peace maker. Although not known to be particularly religious or a pacifist, Trump concluded his peace drive by liberally invoking God, writing. "God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!" Trump also made light of Iran's missile strikes on US interests in the region, calling it "weak" and suggesting Teheran had tipped off or alerted Washington to the attacks so it could take preventive action so that no lives are lost. "Iran has officially responded to our Obliteration of their Nuclear Facilities with a very weak response, which we expected, and have very effectively countered. There have been 14 missiles fired — 13 were knocked down, and 1 was 'set free,' because it was headed in a nonthreatening direction," he wrote in another post. "I am pleased to report that NO Americans were harmed, and hardly any damage was done. Most importantly, they've gotten it all out of their 'system,' and there will, hopefully, be no further HATE. I want to thank Iran for giving us early notice, which made it possible for no lives to be lost, and nobody to be injured," he added, cocking a snook at the Islamic Republic. His posts also indicated that he had first convinced Iran to draw down and he would "enthusiastically encourage Israel to do the same."

Hours after Trump claims ceasefire, Iran fires missiles at Israel: Key developments

Hours after United States President Donald Trump claimed that a ceasefire understanding had been reached between Israel and Iran, the latter launched a missile attack on the former. After Trump's claim, Iran responded saying that there was no ceasefire understanding 'as of now'. (AP) While Trump's ceasefire deadline for Iran passed, the Israeli military warned that a new barrage of missiles had been fired from Iran. The attack killed at least three people in Israel's Beercheba city, local reports said. 📌 US President Donald Trump earlier today claimed that a ceasefire understanding had been reached between Israel and Iran. 'It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!,' Trump posted on Truth Social. 📌Minutes after the announcement, explosions were heard, likely due to a suspected drone strike, in Camp Taji in Iraq's capital city of Baghdad. No casualties were reported, according to the state media. 📌 After Trump's claim, Iran responded saying that there was no ceasefire understanding 'as of now'. However, they added that if Israel stopped its 'illegal aggression' against the people of Iran by 4 pm Tehran time, the country had no intention to continue hostilities. 📌 While Iran showed its willingness towards the cessation of hostilities, Israel maintained silence on the matter, The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu provided no response to a message by the Associated Press seeking his comment on the ceasefire understanding. 📌Following Iran's comment on the ceasefire, the country's foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi put up a cryptic post, thanking the Iranian armed forces. ""The military operations of our powerful Armed Forces to punish Israel for its aggression continued until the very last minute, at 4am," Araghchi said. 📌Hours after the ceasefire announcement by Trump, Israel said its defense forces had identified missiles launched from Iran toward its territory. The IDF said that the defensive systems would intercept the threat, while urging the public to remain in protected spaces until further notice. 📌Reports said that Iran launched six missiles towards Israel, killing four people in the Beersheba city, according to Israeli emergency services. While two missiles were launched in the first attack, the second salvo had four missiles. The country closed its airspace until further notice, according to AP news agency. 📌Meanwhile, Israeli PM Netanyahu, in a security meeting with his cabinet, asked his ministers to not make public remarks on Trump's ceasefire announcement. 📌Three survivors were found under the rubble after Iran's missile strikes hit a building in Beersheba in southern Israel. Fire and rescue teams, along with the country's Home Front Command Forces, are involved in rescue operations. 📌Iran has fired a sixth round of missiles towards Israel, according to the IDF, with sirens sounding in Haifa city.

Trump holds out Israel-Iran ceasefire deal as validation for his gamble of US airstrikes

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Monday said the '12 day war' between Israel and Iran was set to end in a ceasefire, holding out the expected deal as validation for his strategic gamble of ordering airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites. 'It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE,' Trump posted on social media. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran would stop its attacks if Israel would. It's unclear what role Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's leader, played in the talks. He had said on social media earlier Monday that Iran would not surrender. Israel has not publicly confirmed that it has agreed to end hostilities. "As of now, there is NO 'agreement' on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations,' Araghchi posted on X. 'However, provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 am Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards.' A ceasefire, if it culminates as Trump laid out, would be welcome news for the region and the world. But the situation in the Middle East remains far from stable and it's unclear how longer-term dynamics might be affected. The Israeli and US bombing of Iran certainly has slowed Iran's ability to enrich nuclear material but it might also have steeled Tehran's resolve to breakout toward a bomb. Trump's announcement comes as he prepared to depart on Tuesday for the NATO summit in the Netherlands, where he will likely make the case that his mix of aggression and diplomacy has succeeded. Never shy to suggest he deserves the Nobel Peace Price, Trump went so far as to give the conflict between Israel and Iran the name of the '12 day war,' a title that seemed to reference the 1967 'Six Day War' in which Israel fought a group of Arab countries including Egypt, Jordan and Syria. Later, Trump in another social media posting said that 'Israel & Iran came to me, almost simultaneously, and said, 'PEACE!'' 'They have so much to gain, and yet, so much to lose if they stray from the road of RIGHTEOUSNESS & TRUTH,' Trump added. "The future for Israel & Iran is UNLIMITED, & filled with great PROMISE. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH!"
