Dr M's call for snap polls illogical and irresponsible, says DAP MP
PETALING JAYA : Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan has dismissed former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's call for a snap election as 'illogical', saying the public wants political stability, not another election.
In a statement, Syahredzan said such a demand is irresponsible, especially at a time when Malaysia and the rest of the world are facing turbulent conditions, from global trade wars to military conflicts.
'The majority of Malaysians do not want an election right now. They want a stable government,' he said.
He said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had just tabled the 13th Malaysia Plan amid global uncertainties, including impending US tariff decisions and ongoing regional conflicts, such as the border tension between Thailand and Cambodia which continued to loom large.
'Malaysia is not exempt from these global headwinds. What we need now is a steady government, helmed by a leader who can steer the country through these storms,' Syahredzan said.
Earlier today, Mahathir urged Anwar to dissolve Parliament to pave the way for a general election.
'If Anwar is truly brave, he should just dissolve Parliament and call for a general election now. He has nothing to fear – after all, his allies claim only 15,000 people attended the rally. Surely, he will win,' he said in a Facebook post.
Mahathir was referring to the Turun Anwar rally last Saturday, which was held to call for Anwar's resignation. About 18,000 people took part in the rally, according to police, although the organisers, PAS Youth, claimed that more than 200,000 participants were present.
Syahredzan urged Mahathir to respect the country's democratic process and the timeline of the current Parliament.
'Elections will come when the time is right. But that time is not now. The parliamentary term hasn't even reached its maturity.
'To Mahathir, please – your time has passed. We still respect you, but now is the time for others to lead the country,' he added.
He warned that the future of the people and the next generation should not be gambled away to serve the ego and self-interests of a few politicians.

Sabah prioritises agriculture as key driver of economic growth

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said agriculture contributed RM12.2 billion or 14.5 per cent to Sabah's GDP, making it the third largest sector in the state economy. He said this during the closing ceremony of the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) 2025 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here on Sunday, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. To boost food resilience, Hajiji said Sabah had revived the Sabah Rice and Padi Board last year with the aim of raising rice self-sufficiency to 30 per cent by 2026 and 60 per cent by 2030. He highlighted the role of technology such as the Internet of Things and smart farming in modernising agriculture and attracting younger generations to the sector. So far, Sabah's 15 Permanent Food Production Parks (TKPM) have produced over 1,494 metric tonnes of food, generating more than RM4.32 million in returns. ‘Every inch of Sabah will be defended': Anwar denies deal over disputed Sulawesi waters
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 3 — Sabah's rights will be protected in ongoing negotiations with Indonesia over the disputed Ambalat maritime zone, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar dismissed claims that he had ignored the state's sovereignty over the oil-rich region in the Sulawesi Sea and said any agreement must involve both the Sabah state government and the state legislative assembly. 'This is a border issue between two countries, and Indonesia is an ally. President Prabowo is my personal friend, a family friend. I want it to be a good relationship. 'We talked about Sulawesi, and I wanted Hajiji to hear for himself, and give his view. We will discuss perimeters, following maritime laws, following history. It must be approved by the state government and subsequently the state legislative assembly. 'We will negotiate it properly, without surrendering. This was all in the meeting, not just under-the-table talk,' he said here today. Anwar said the matter was recently raised in Parliament, where it was suggested the dispute had already been settled — a claim he denied. 'We will protect every inch of Sabah. I will defend this principle. I chose to answer this now because we are defending Sabah on behalf of the federal government,' he said. Located in the Sulawesi Sea off Sabah's east coast near Tawau, the Ambalat Block has long been claimed by both Malaysia and Indonesia, primarily due to its oil and gas potential. Tensions flared in the early 2000s when both countries issued overlapping exploration concessions — Indonesia to ENI and Unocal, and Malaysia, via Petronas, to Shell.
