Trump doubles reward to $50 million for arrest of Venezuela's president to face US drug charges
'Under President Trump's leadership, Maduro will not escape justice and he will be held accountable for his despicable crimes,' Attorney General Pam Bondi said Thursday in a video announcing the reward.
Maduro was indicted in Manhattan federal court in 2020, during the first Trump presidency, along with several close allies on federal charges of narco-terrorism and conspiracy to import cocaine. At the time, the US offered a $15 million reward for his arrest. That was later raised by the Biden administration to $25 million — the same amount the US offered for the capture of Osama bin Laden following the September 11, 2001, attacks.
Despite the big bounty, Maduro remains entrenched after defying the US, the European Union and several Latin American governments who condemned his 2024 reelection as a sham and recognized his opponent as Venezuela's duly elected president.
Last month, the Trump administration struck a deal to secure the release of 10 Americans jailed in the capital, Caracas, in exchange for Venezuela getting home scores of migrants deported by the United States to El Salvador under the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. Shortly after, the White House reversed course and allowed US oil producer Chevron to resume drilling in Venezuela after it was previously blocked by US sanctions.
Bondi said the Justice Department has seized more than $700 million in assets linked to Maduro, including two private jets, and said nearly 7 tons of seized cocaine had been traced directly to the leftist leader.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil released a statement characterizing the reward as 'pathetic' and accusing Bondi of orchestrating a 'crude political propaganda operation.'
'We're not surprised, coming from whom it comes from. The same one who promised a nonexistent 'secret list' of Epstein and who wallows in scandals for political favors,' Gil said, referring to the backlash Bondi faced after the Justice Department announced last month that a long-rumored 'client list' of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein does not exist. 'Her show is a joke, a desperate distraction from her own misery.'

US budget deficit has widened by $109B from a year ago despite influx of tariff revenue
The U.S. federal government's annual budget deficit has widened by $109 billion so far this fiscal year despite an influx of tariff revenue to the government's coffers. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on Friday released its monthly budget update for July, which found that the federal budget deficit totaled $1.6 trillion in the first 10 months of fiscal year 2025. That figure is $109 billion higher than it was for the same period in FY2024. Overall, federal tax receipts were up $263 billion, or 6%, while spending outpaced that gain, rising by $372 billion, or 7%, in the first 10 months of FY2025. Much of the rise in federal tax revenue was driven by the Trump administration's tariffs, which are taxes on imported goods that the White House has increased markedly on U.S. trading partners over the course of this year. National Debt Tracker: American Taxpayers (You) Are Now On The Hook For $36,950,459,859,111.56 As Of 8/7/25 The CBO said customs duties collected were up by $70 billion, or 112%, so far in FY2025 compared with the same period in the prior year as a result of the higher tariffs. Read On The Fox Business App Individual income and payroll tax receipts were up $214 billion, or 6%, from a year ago in the first 10 months of this fiscal year. Ray Dalio Warns Of Looming Fiscal Crisis If Us Doesn't Address Deficit Spending: 'Economic Heart Attack' Federal spending is up $372 billion in the first 10 months of FY2025 compared with last year, much of which is due to higher outlays on mandatory spending programs. Spending on Social Security benefits increased by $102 billion, or 8%, from the same period last year. That increase was due to higher average benefits due to the annual cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) that boosts benefit amounts to account for inflation and the rising number of enrolled beneficiaries as America's population ages. Republicans Defy Fiscal Critics To Push Through Trump's Signature 'Beautiful' Tax Cuts Medicare spending is $58 billion higher in FY2025 so far compared with last year due to a greater number of enrollees and higher payment rates for services. Medicaid spending was up $47 billion from a year ago due to rising costs per enrollee. The cost of servicing America's nearly $37 trillion national debt also increased by $60 billion, or 8%, in the first 10 months of FY2025 compared to the prior year. That's due to the national debt being larger than it was in the same period in FY2024. For the month of July, the deficit amounted to $289 billion, $45 billion more than in July 2024, as spending increased by more than the rise in tax collections. The CBO also noted that the surplus in June 2025 was $27 billion, or $1 billion higher than the initial estimate a month article source: US budget deficit has widened by $109B from a year ago despite influx of tariff revenue

Greek police seize over 270 kilos of cocaine with a market value over 5.5 million euros. 3 arrested
THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — Greek police said Sunday they seized over 270 kilograms (595 pounds) of cocaine with an estimated value of over 5.5 million euros ($6.5 million) and arrested three men. The cocaine was hidden inside a container of bananas imported from Ecuador, they said. Police had been informed by the United Kingdom's National Crime Agency that the cocaine would be carried by a ship headed to the northern Greek port of Thessaloniki. Police officers found the cocaine and removed most of the drug contained in brick-sized packages from the container before it was loaded into a truck. They released a short video of the removal operation. The truck headed for the Athens suburb of Aspropyrgos, more that 500 kilometers (310 miles) to the south, where the police arrested three men as they opened the container Saturday. The total amount of cocaine seized was 271.15 kilos (598 pounds), police said. The arrested men include two Greeks, the 40-year-old owner of a haulage company, a 32-year-old and a 47-year-old Bulgarian citizen, police say, adding that the Bulgarian was in touch with a drug gang and organized the picking up and transport of the container. The 32-year-old was in charge of distributing the drug through unnamed gang members. Police are looking for more people they say belong to a drug distribution gang. The three arrested men will face a prosecutor Monday.
