The MAG hosts 24th annual BHM celebration
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – The Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester held its 24th annual Black History Month celebration day on Sunday. Members of the community got to enjoy live performances, dance, music, art, panel discussions, vendors and more all afternoon.
The celebration had performances (African dance and drums, step teams, spoken word, contemporary dance, poetry, and live music with DJ Iron Will), arts and crafts, face painting, photo souvenirs, and Art Grows Here garden planting.
The vendors featured Black-owned businesses, a fashion show that highlighted Black designers and stylists, and more.

The 13-year-old daughter of Beyoncé and Jay Z took home the Young Stars Award for a second year in a row at the 25th BET Awards. The YoungStars Award honors young entertainers who have had an impact in television, film, music or sports. Akira Akbar, Graceyn 'Gracie' Hollingsworth, Heiress Harris, Melody Hurd, Thaddeus J. Mixson, Tyrik Johnson and VanVan were among those nominated. Last year, Blue Ivy also took home the prize. Beyoncé also received two nominations at this year awards. She was up for album of the year for her eighth studio album, "Cowboy Carter." Her song "Blackbiird," featuring Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy and Reyna Roberts, also received a nomination for the BETHer Award. The song is a cover of the Beatles' 1968 tune, which was inspired by the Civil Rights Movement. The category honors motivational and empowering songs that center women. The 35-time Grammy-winning singer didn't take home any awards this year. As fans know, Beyoncé first released the eighth studio album in March 2024. It has since made history and broken multiple records. As Beyoncé's first country album, she deliberately featured country legends and emerging Black country artists alike. She became the first Black woman to win best country album and album of the year at the 2025 Grammys. She kicked off her "Cowboy Carter" tour — a spectacle filled with fashion, multiple music genres and cultural commentary — April 28 in Los Angeles. Blue Ivy has been blowing fans away with her stellar dance moves and has taken a lead role on her mom's Cowboy Carter and Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour. Many have been raving online about her performances, and her she's certainly shown that she has what it takes to step up to the plate — even approving the title manager Blue. Beyoncé is currently on the international leg of her tour. The nine-city tour will span the U.S. and Europe with the grand finale taking place in Las Vegas on July 26. Manny Pacquiao and Sydney Sweeney Headline 2025 Boxing Hall of Fame Weekend
Canastota, NY is known as the showplace for boxing and has continued to be the location for the International Boxing Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. 'It's a great time for boxing because the whole world of boxing focuses on this celebration to honor the new class of inductees,' said Ed Brophy, the Executive Director of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. This year's class featured 14 names, four received posthumous inductions and 10 were in attendance. Those names included referee Kenny Bayless in the non-participant category, television producer Ross Greenberg, and journalist Randy Gordon in the observer category, and fighters Manny 'Pac Man' Pacquiao, 'The Pazmanian Devil' Vinny Paz, Michael 'Second To' Nunn, Mary Jo Sanders, Cathy 'Cat' Davis, Yessica 'Kika' Chavez and Anne Sophie Mathis. From Thursday to Sunday, fans had the opportunity to take pictures, get autographs hear ring side talks from previous and new inductees and see the fist casting for the new inductees. 'This is the highest honor to get inducted into the Hall of Fame and fans come from all over,' Brophy said. 'Boxing's the greatest sport and we're excited to present the highest honor.' 'I've been coming to the International Boxing Hall of Fame since 2009, because of the love, because of how well Ed Brophy runs the show here and to actually be inducted just took it up another level for me,' Bayless said. On Sunday, the Parade of Champions made it's way through the streets of Canastota and saw celebrities and previous hall of fame inductees like George Cooney, Jackie Kallen. The parade was headlined by Christy Martin and the Grand Marshal, actress Sydney Sweeney, who will be portraying Martin in a movie later this year. After the parade was the induction ceremony at Turning Stone where the 2025 class received their Hall of Fame rings, reminisced on the past and gave some words of encouragement. 'Don't give up, just stay focused,' Pacquiao said. 'Hard work and discipline. The most important is discipline that's what we can do so we can fulfill our dreams in life. It might not be in boxing but in our lives we have a dream to fulfill, to accomplish. So we should believe in ourselves, of course believe in God, and have hard work and discipline.' British singer and actress Cynthia Erivo was crowned best actress at the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards in Los Angeles. Hosted by Kevin Hart, Monday's BET Awards celebrated the work of black people in music, entertainment, film, sports and philanthropy. The London-born star, who rose to worldwide prominence last year for her role in Wicked, was also nominated for the BET Her Award — which recognises empowering songs that focus on women — for her rendition of Defying Gravity. Foxx, Carey, gospel star Kirk Franklin and Snoop Dogg were honoured with the ultimate icon award for their contributions to community, entertainment, and advocacy. Miles Canton, Luke James and Lucky Daye delivered an R&B tribute to Quincy Jones, who died in November.
