Dicky Lovelady signs with NY Mets: What to know about the pitcher with an unusual name

The New York Mets made a Dicky Lovelady move in their bullpen.
New York signed free-agent left-handed relief pitcher Richard Lovelady on Monday.
The journeyman has requested to be called by his nickname "Dicky" with fans, teammates and staffers. For official records, however, he'll still be listed as Richard Lovelady.

The 29-year-old is shooting straight up to the big leagues after opting out of his minor league contract with the Triple-A St. Paul Saints.
Lovelady is the latest addition to a Mets roster that has struggled with stamina this season. Over the course of six major league seasons, Lovelady has pitched for five teams − the Kansas City Royals, Oakland A's, Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, and Toronto Blue Jays. His career has had ups and downs, with a 5.26 ERA in 101 innings, with a 5-13 record and 93 strikeouts.
This season, Lovelady struggled to get his stats up, opening the year with the Blue Jays and being whacked for a 21.60 ERA in two appearances. But the majors couldn't abstain from Lovelady for long. After rejecting an assignment to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, he signed a new minor league deal with the Minnesota Twins. Lovelady found success with the St. Paul Saints, posting a 1.31 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 19 appearances.
The last two weeks have been hard on the Mets. New York has lost eight of its last nine games and the bullpen continues to be a source of concern.

Lovelady's debut in New York coincides with Women's Night at Citi Field on Monday. Oh, yes, it might be Lovelady's night. Oh, what a night.
New York (46-32) hosts the Atlanta Braves (35-41) at 7:10 p.m.

James Cook contract details: Bills agree to $48M deal with star RB

The Buffalo Bills are making sure their Cook isn't leaving the kitchen. James Cook agreed to a four-year extension worth $48 million, the Bills announced via social media Wednesday morning. The two-time Pro Bowl running back was set to enter the final year of his rookie contract in 2025, paving the way for an extension. MORE: What we know about the Bills contract extension with James Cook Cook has been a key piece to the Bills offense since arriving in Western New York, totaling at least 1,200 scrimmage yards in each of the last two seasons. Here's what to know about Cook's new deal. James Cook contract details Cook agreed to terms on a four-year, $48 million extension, according to reports. The deal carries an average annual value (AAV) of $12 million, tying him with Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs as the sixth highest-paid running back, according to OverTheCap. His $30 million in guarantees is third-most of all running backs behind only Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley and Las Vegas Raiders rookie Ashton Jeanty. There's been a spirited debate in recent years about paying running backs, but it's clear that Buffalo values theirs. Prior to Cook's extension, only seven players at the position carried an AAV of more than $10 million. James Cook stats Cook has taken on a big role in the Bills' offense since arriving three years ago. The 25-year-old missed just one game during that time, playing in 49 of 50 games. He's coming off back-to-back seasons with at least 1,000 yards rushing, which came after taking over the starting gig ahead of the 2023 season. Cook scored 16 rushing touchdowns in 2024, finishing tied for the league lead with Jahmyr Gibbs and Derrick Henry. The Bills will hope for more of that going forward after already receiving a great return on their investment to this point. Islanders sign 1st overall pick to entry level contract

Islanders sign 1st overall pick to entry level contract originally appeared on The Sporting News The New York Islanders have announced today that they have signed defenseman Matthew Schaefer to a 3 year entry level contract. The Islanders had 20 kids who have also lost their parents at a young age help Matthew sign his deal in a wholesome moment. Schaefer also threw out the first pitch at the New York Mets game today to commemorate the occasion. The 17 year old Ontario native was selected 1st overall by the New York Islanders in the 2025 NHL draft. He is expected to compete for a roster spot on the team this upcoming season. If he makes the team, insert his name in the Calder trophy conversation as a top threat. He will wear number 48 with the big club. Matthew recorded 5 goals and 17 assists for 22 points in 17 games with the OHL's Erie Otters last season. Impressively, Schaefer's production in his second junior season still surpassed that of his rookie season in which he played the full year: recording 3 goals and 14 assists for 17 points in 56 games. Schaefer had his recent draft season cut short due to a collar bone injury sustained while playing for Team Canada during the 2025 World Juniors tournament. Schaefer is a candidate to represent Canada again in the 2026 World Junior tournament if he doesn't make the NHL as he has participated in the summer showcase with Hockey Canada, returning to the ice in game action for the first time since he sustained said injury.
