YouTube thinks Balatro is gambling and has been age-restricting videos

Yahoo08-04-2025
It takes a lot of time and effort to get a game off the ground, especially if you're an indie developer. And it's even harder to get a game recognized, with so many different titles making their debuts each day. So, when something like Balatro comes along, it's important to really cherish the moment.
And while it seems like something that just popped up overnight, it was a long time in the making, with developer LocalThunk taking years to fine tune the details to get things right. For many, Balatro was the best game of 2024, and despite tons of success, it's been seeing some uphill battles from some unlikely sources.
YouTube is the latest to get Balatro in its net, with PC Gamer reporting that the platform is now age-restricting videos about the game, alleging that it is gambling content. Now, we know that YouTube has tightened its policy with regard to gambling content, but hitting Balatro content with age restrictions seems like a bit of a stretch.
Let's be clear, Balatro is an addictive game. But it's addictive in the best kind of way, which only requires that you spend your time, energy, and emotions. The game never asks you to pay anything additional, and the only way that you can beat it is with a lot of luck, playtime, and skill.
There are a lot of games out there right now that allow you to pay to win. Or make you pay through the nose with gatcha-style mechanics or loot boxes. And if Balatro utilized these mechanics, it would make sense to restrict content in accordance with YouTube's new policies, but that isn't the case.
Of course, many are not happy with what's going on, especially creators that are focused on Balatro for content. And what makes this worse is that it's not clear if something like this will ever change, considering that YouTube isn't very transparent about these kinds of situations.
And while we'd like to say that this is kind of a surprise, it isn't the first time something like this has happened. Balatro was hit with an 18 rating by PEGI (Pan-European Game Information), which is Europe's video game content rating system, because it thought that the game featured "teaching or glamorisation of simulated gambling."
It took some time, but that was finally amended, with the game receiving a PEGI 12 rating. The path remains unclear for Balatro, but it's tough to see these types of things happen. On a lighter note, the first big update for Balatro is still on track for 2025. So it will be interesting to see what kinds of changes or enhancements will be introduced.

Karrion Kross Breaks Silence On WWE Departure

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. One day after his WWE contract officially expired, Karrion Kross has broken his silence on his departure from the company. In a candid and emotional video posted to his YouTube channel, the former NXT Champion confirmed his exit and shared his deep frustration with how his final year was handled. Kross, along with his wife Scarlett, was moved to the alumni section of on Sunday, August 10th. His new video, titled "My WWE Contract Ends Today," is his first public statement on the matter. Karrion Kross Breaks Silence In the video, Kross expressed a feeling of disappointment with his recent creative direction. He specifically addressed the organic groundswell of fan support he had been receiving. "I was being told by certain people not to embrace it, and that felt wrong, because having a connection to the audience like this doesn't come around for everybody," Kross said. "I don't feel like we're collectively going in the direction that the audience would want us to go in, so that part doesn't feel good." He added that his final contract negotiation with WWE was not a "real conversation" and left him "profoundly disappointed." ( INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 06: (L-R) Karrion Kross and Scarlett Bordeaux attend Netflix's Debut of WWE Monday Night Raw at Intuit Dome on January 06, 2025 in Inglewood, California. ( Karrion Kross' Week of Chaos and Confusion Kross's departure comes after a chaotic week of conflicting reports about his future. Initial reports stated his contract would expire without a new offer, which was followed by a contradictory report that a new deal had been made. Kross himself then denied the reports were entirely true in a podcast interview. This public back-and-forth, culminating in the move to the alumni page and this new, emotional video, has left fans wondering what is real and what is part of a storyline. The entire situation has drawn strong parallels to a recent storyline involving R-Truth. Earlier this year, WWE masterfully used legitimate-seeming news reports about R-Truth's contract not being renewed to create a "worked shoot" angle that culminated in his surprise, fan-demanded return. More news: WWE Superstar Announces Retirement Match Many fans are now speculating that Kross's departure could be a similar, more elaborate storyline. His emotional, fourth-wall-breaking video could be either a legitimate, bitter farewell or the most brilliant performance of his career, designed to build maximum anticipation for a shocking comeback. In his video, Kross himself referenced a previous interview where he asked for it to be made clear that his intense character was a "work," only adding to the current mystery. Whether this is a real departure or a masterful storyline, the wrestling world is now buzzing. All eyes will be on WWE programming to see if the "Tick Tock" for Karrion Kross has truly run out. Out-Of-Touch Celebrity Food Comments

Access to good food should be a right, not a privilege, but due to factors like the rising cost of living, many people face food insecurity. Likewise, toxic diet culture and unrealistic beauty standards impact some people's relationship to food. However, some celebrities tend to operate like they live in a "bubble" where everyone can afford the same nutrition as them, or that their word on diet and wellness is gospel. Here are 19 times celebrities made out-of-touch comments about food: In 2021, chef Alice Waters told the New York Times, "I cannot compromise when it comes to wholesomeness. Our health begins in the ground. Period. The health of the soil is the most important thing right now for our health and for climate. I cannot accept any excuses, because I don't believe they're true. They're myths promoted by the fast-food industry: 'It's too expensive to eat organic, regenerative food.' It is not. If you know how to cook and you don't eat huge amounts of meat and cheese, it is not more expensive. It doesn't take more time. We can do it. That is what I'm trying to help people understand." According to the Mayo Clinic, organic food is commonly pricier than conventionally grown food, but, aside from less contact with pesticides, organic food has not been clearly shown to have more nutrients. In a 2020 episode of their YouTube series Dinner With The D'Amelios, Charli and Dixie D'Amelio were rude about the food that Chef Aaron May prepared for them. For example, as the chef described the plant-based paella he made, Charli made faces where he couldn't see. And Dixie had an over-the-top, disgusted reaction to finding a snail in her paella, even after the chef explained its significance. And after he convinced her to actually try the snail, her parents had to call out her behavior. And then, rather than being grateful for the chef's hard work, Charli asked for something totally different In the comments, many viewers criticized Charli and Dixie's behavior while praising Chef Aaron as well as guest James Charles. In 2022, Kourtney Kardashian Barker told the Wall Street Journal, "When I had Mason [her son] is when I really started my wellness journey. He's very smart. He'll tell me, 'A person was bad because they let me have Cheetos.'" In The Kardashians Season 1, Kendall Jenner proudly made her own snack — and worried everyone, including her mom, Kris Jenner, with the haphazard way she cut a cucumber. However, rather than teach Kendall how to safely cut it, Kris offered a different solution — have the chef do it for her. In 2025, Jessica Biel told Parade that she has a rule against letting her kids eat McDonald's. She said, "I'm like, 'Sorry, guys, I'm not doing it.' They don't get McDonald's. I just feel like I don't know what's going on with [the] quality of that food. It's stuff like that that I'm like, 'No, we're not.' Let's go have a great burger and fries at a fancy place. I'd rather pay more for you to have something fancy than something like that... I guess I'm not crazy, rigid, and strict, but that would be something that, if they asked me for, I would just be like, 'Next! Next place. Next down the line!'" Her quote sparked a discussion, with some readers agreeing with her while others saying her comments were "privileged." In 2023, Mark Cuban was labeled an "out-of-touch billionaire" after a TikTok video in which he shared the "just stop buying coffee"-style financial advice young people are all too used to hearing from older generations. In the comments and in stitches, many viewers pointed out that not buying coffee wouldn't actually make that big of a difference in their bank accounts. Following the backlash, Mark didn't address the criticism, but he did post another "tip of the day." He said, "What's the tip of the day? Be nice, smile, cause smiling takes nothing. And you know what? We all rather do business with someone that smiles, we all rather work with somebody that smiles, we all rather just make someone's day with just a smile. It's so easy." In 2021, Jennifer Aniston told InStyle, that, if she's stressed, she eats, "A chip. Crunch, crunch, crunch... Usually [just one]. I'm good at that. I can have one M&M, one chip. I know, that's so annoying." Discussing the challenges of parenting with the Times magazine in 2014, Salma Hayek said, "You have to work very hard to please them all. If you are making pizza, there is one who doesn't like cheese, and another who hates tomato. Our chef sometimes looks so downhearted. He's always saying, 'Madam, what are we going to do?'" In 2009, Kate Moss infamously shared her "mantra" with WWD. She said, "There are loads of mottos. There's 'nothing tastes as good as skinny feels'. That's one of them... You try and remember, but it never works." Her quote was widely criticized, and some people accused her of promoting eating disorders. However, in 2018, she expressed regret over the statement, telling NBC, "My friend used to say it. Because you know, we were all living together, and we'd go for the biscuits and go, 'Oh, nothing tastes as g ...' It's a little jingle." In a series of since-deleted tweets from 2021, Chrissy Teigen asked her followers about the "most expensive thing you've eaten that you thought sucked." Sharing her own example, she said, "one time john [Legend, her husband] and I were at a restaurant and the waiter recommended a nice Cabernet. We got the bill and it was 13,000 dollars. HOW DO U CASUALLY RECOMMEND THAT WINE. we didn't even finish it and it had been cleared!!!" In response to criticism, she tweeted, "didn't say it was [relatable] and doesn't have to be. Should I be tiptoeing... hey, not everything I say on my twitter is going to be relatable to you because it is my life and my twitter and my stories. I see your tweets, I get your jokes, you are so funny, yes, you really nailed me." In 2010, Gisele Bündchen told Harper's Bazaar UK, "I think breastfeeding really helped me keep my figure... Some people here [in the US] think they don't have to breastfeed, and I think, 'Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?' I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months." Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2024, Kim Kardashian confirmed an online rumor that she makes someone else remove the cardboard sleeve from her coffee cup. In a series of 2021 Instagram stories, Demi Lovato called out The Bigg Chill, a frozen yogurt shop, for having sugar-free options on display. Many people called Demi out for not realizing some people, like diabetics, need sugar-free options. The shop reportedly responded, "We carry items for Diabetics, Celiac disease, Vegan and of course have many indulgent items as well." They also messaged her privately, which she shared in another IG story post. In a since-deleted video, Demi apologized, saying, "I'm sorry that I got the messaging wrong. I'm sorry that I may have disappointed some people. I walked into a situation that didn't sit right with me, my intuition said speak up about this, so I did." Four years later, Demi and the Bigg Chill had clearly made amends, as they shared their visit to shop on TikTok. In a jokey 2023 Instagram video, JoJo Siwa poured milk all over her counter, pretending she'd forgotten she was fixing a bowl of cereal while daydreaming about Miley Cyrus's "Flowers" music video. In the comments, fans called her out for wasting food. On a 2022 episode of The Kardashians, Kylie and Kris Jenner decided to bond by doing "normal things" together. They went grocery shopping, where they acted excited their payment went through. Some viewers criticized them as "out of touch" and "privileged" for treating grocery shopping like a novel experience. In 2005, Gwyneth Paltrow told Late Night with Conan O'Brien, "I would rather die than let my kid eat Cup-a-Soup." Similarly, in 2011, Gwyneth Paltrow told The Jonathan Ross Show, "I'd rather smoke crack than eat cheese from a can." A few years later, during a Goop Q&A, a fan asked her if that was still true. She replied, "Hell yes. You know, crack might be extreme, but spray cheese is not my kind of party." Also in 2011, Gwyneth Paltrow told Elle, "When you go to Paris and your concierge sends you to some restaurant because they get a kickback, it's like, 'No. Where should I really be? Where is the great bar with organic wine?'" In a Goop post, Gwyneth said, "As I suspected, we only made it through about four days, when I personally broke and had some chicken and fresh vegetables (and in full transparency, half a bag of black licorice). My perspective has been forever altered by how difficult it was to eat wholesome, nutritious food on that budget, even for just a few days — a challenge that 47 million Americans face every day, week, and year... I know hunger doesn't always touch us all directly — but it does touch us all indirectly. After this week, I am even more grateful that I am able to provide high-quality food for my kids. Let's all do what we can to make this a basic human right and not a privilege." She also encouraged fans to donate to the organization she promoted through her challenge, the Food Bank for New York City.
