AJ Salgado helps lift UCLA over Murray State in Men's College World Series opener

Yahoo19 hours ago

UCLA's return to the Men's College World Series started with three hours of sweaty palms in 86-degree heat and high humidity. An early lead shrunk across four innings on a muggy afternoon.
Only when closer Easton Hawk struck out Murray State's Dominic Decker on a full count for the final out could the Bruins exhale. They walked off Charles Schwab Field for the first time in 12 years with a 6-4 win Saturday.

The Bruins jumped ahead early but couldn't build momentum. They loaded the bases on their first three batters but only scored after Roman Martin drew a four-pitch walk. Dean West ripped an RBI single to right field in the second. Then he got thrown out trying to get back to first after rounding the bag. In the third, Murray State left fielder Dustin Mercer made an athletic catch on the warning track to rob the Bruins of a two-run hit.

Payton Brennan singled to give the Bruins runners on the corners with two outs in the third only to be spoiled by an athletic over-the-shoulder catch on the warning track by Murray State left fielder Dustin Mercer.
Finally, UCLA broke through in the fourth with four runs. Martin and Roch Cholowsky each drove in runs before AJ Salgado's two-run double to right field. The Bruins' first multi-run inning gave them a 6-0 lead.

That was enough behind a gritty start from junior Michael Barnett. The righty scattered three hits and four walks across 4 ⅔innings. The bullpen conceded three more runs and escaped to secure the win.
UCLA will play the winner of Saturday's evening contest between Louisiana State and Arkansas on Monday.

Cardinals' Willson Contreras rips Brewers player after heated incident over first-base collision

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras tore into a Milwaukee Brewers player following a collision at first base during the two teams' matchup on Saturday. The baserunning incident occurred in the bottom of the third inning when Brewers third baseman Caleb Durbin hit a one-hopper to Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, who fired the ball to Contreras for the third out of the inning. Contreras stepped backward off of the plate and collided with Durbin. Durbin fell to the ground. Brewers star Rhys Hoskins was among those who seemed to yell at Contreras from the dugout, but cooler heads seemingly prevailed for the time being. When Contreras got up to the plate, he was plunked by Brewers pitcher Jose Quintana. Contreras ran after the ball, picked it up and handed it to Quintana as he ran down to first base. Contreras got some comeuppance in the ninth inning when he hit a solo home run off of Brewers pitcher Rob Zastryzny. Contreras started into the Brewers dugout. St. Louis picked up the 8-5 win, but the war of words continued after the game. "One of their players likes to talk from far away, but when he got to my face, he didn't say s---," Contreras said, via The Athletic. "I was looking for more than that. He seems to be tough, but he's a f---ing p---y. I'm not going to name names. He knows who he is." When asked about Hoskins, Contreras said that the Brewers player hadn't said anything to him. Hoskins was asked about his interactions with Contreras. He responded coyly that the two were "just talking about playing first base." Contreras' homer was his ninth on the season. The Cardinals improved to 37-34 with the win. Milwaukee dropped to 38-34. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Getty Images No other golf course says U.S. Open like Oakmont Country Club, near the Allegheny River in western Pennsylvania. This is a record 10th time in the history of this championship that Oakmont has played host to the drama. As for the course itself, it's known for precision-cut greens and treacherously deep rough — and it really has lived up to its reputation during the first 54 holes of this year's major. For those wondering, 2025 joins 1927, 1935, 1953, 1962, 1973, 1983, 1994, 2007, and most recently in 2016, where Dustin Johnson won his first career major here at Oakmont. Grizzlies trading Desmond Bane to Magic for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, 4 first-round picks: Report

The Memphis Grizzlies are trading Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony and several draft picks, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Per Charania, in addition to Caldwell-Pope and Anthony, the Grizzlies will receive four unprotected first-round picks and one first-round pick swap. Advertisement Memphis will get the No. 16 selection in the 2025 NBA Draft, a 2026 first-rounder (which originally belonged to the Phoenix Suns) and unprotected first-round picks in 2028 and 2030. The pick swap is for 2029 and will be lightly protected, ESPN reports. The Magic now have a new-look roster to go with their new uniforms for next season. Orlando finished 41-41 last season, which put them seventh in the standings and in the four-team play-in tournament. With this deal, the Magic bolster their chances to make an upward move in an Eastern Conference that will have some uncertainty next season. The Boston Celtics will likely be diminished with Jayson Tatum's torn Achilles injury along with whatever moves the team might make to maneuver the salary cap. The Milwaukee Bucks may trade Giannis Antetokounmpo, but will be without Damian Lillard for nearly all of next season (also due to an Achilles tear) and face payroll concerns with pending free agents Brook Lopez and Bobby Portis. Advertisement Bane, who turns 26 on June 25, has averaged 17.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting 41% on 3-pointers during his NBA career. The five-year veteran provides a third scorer to join Paolo Banchero (25.9 ppg) and Franz Wagner (24.2 ppg), both of whom missed significant time with oblique injuries. Jalen Suggs (16.2 ppg) also missed the final three months of the season with a left knee injury. Perhaps even more importantly, Bane is signed for another four seasons with the five-year, $207 million extension he signed before the 2023-24 campaign. The Magic potentially have a core in place for multiple seasons. Caldwell-Pope, 32, moves to the sixth team of his 12-year NBA career. Joining the Magic as a free agent last season, he scored 8.7 points per game and shot 34.2% on 3s. He's won NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets. Anthony, 25, was Orlando's 2020 first-round pick (No. 15 overall) and averaged 9.8 points per game, shooting 35% from long range.
