A Surge of Earthquakes in Alaska Is Raising Red Flags

A powerful offshore earthquake triggered a tsunami warning for communities along a 700-mile (1,100-kilometer) stretch of Alaska's southern coast on Wednesday, July 16. Fortunately, the wave never came, and ground shaking caused minimal damage, but another large quake could strike this area in the near future.
Since 2020, five earthquakes ranging from magnitude 7.2 to 8.2 have struck the southern coast of Alaska. It's not unusual for seismic activity to occur in this part of the state, as it runs along an active tectonic plate boundary called the Aleutian subduction zone. Still, seeing five large quakes within close range of each other in just five years has captured the attention of seismologists like Michael West, Alaska's state seismologist and director of the Alaska Earthquake Center. West told Gizmodo that the southern coast appears to be experiencing an earthquake sequence. While it's possible that Wednesday's quake was the last in this sequence, it's also possible that more large earthquakes—or even one huge one—could strike within the next few years, he said.
'Five earthquakes is enough to be statistically significant,' West said. 'This area is clearly undergoing a period of strain release while other areas of this particular boundary are—at the moment—a bit more quiet.'
Earthquakes occur when accumulated stress along the border between two converging tectonic plates suddenly releases, causing them to slip past each other. Sometimes, one earthquake is enough to relieve the stress on a particular section, but not always. It can take multiple quakes spanning several years to release a significant buildup of stress, which is probably happening on Alaska's southern coast.
Wednesday's quake occurred southeast of Sand Point, a small town in the Aleutian Islands. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, it resulted from strike-slip faulting—when two tectonic plates slip horizontally past each other—in the Aleutian subduction zone. Seismologists have been keeping a close eye on this part of the plate boundary since the 1980s, when they identified it as an area of accumulating tectonic stress, West said. It took another 40 years for that built-up stress to finally result in seismic activity.
'Starting in 2020, it was like, 'Okay, now it's time for this particular segment to do its thing,'' West said.
It's fortunate—and 'remarkable'—that none of the large quakes that have struck this area since 2020 have produced a tsunami, he added. Seismologists know the Aleutian subduction zone is capable of triggering devastating, Pacific-wide tsunamis. In 1946, for example, an 8.6 magnitude earthquake in this plate boundary caused a tsunami that traveled all the way to the shores of Antarctica and killed more than 150 people in Hawaii. The epicenter of that quake was located just 100 miles away from that of Wednesday's quake, West said.
The earthquake sequence currently unfolding in this part of the Aleutian subduction zone could lead to a few different scenarios, he explained. If Wednesday's quake released all the accumulated stress in this segment, seismic activity could stall out and remain quiet for decades. Alternatively, it could take several more magnitude 7 to 8 quakes—or a single magnitude 9—to release all the stress.
'The societal consequences are very, very different for those two different paths,' West said. Unlike the relatively inconsequential quakes Alaska's southern coast has experienced in the last five years, a magnitude 9 would be highly likely to produce a dangerous tsunami and damaging ground shaking. Fortunately, 'there are, and long have been, very strong preparedness efforts underway in these communities,' West said. 'Every community near here has been studied for its tsunami inundation potential.'
That said, 'we can always do more education,' he added. 'We've always got training to do to help people understand how to use that information, and how to do it quickly. You don't have much time [during] events like this.'

Artifacts dating back 7,000 years were discovered at the site. The island has served as a hotspot for archeological activity since the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill in 1989, local outlet Alaska's News Source reported. 'We didn't know that we were going to find a site over 7,000 years old, which is, it's always very exciting," Director of Archaeology for the Alutiiq Museum, Molly Odell, told the outlet. "The site had partially eroded, and so there were artifacts, stone tools, on the beach.' The team of researchers also located evidence of a small 300-year-old village believed to have once been home to nearly 300 people. The Alutiiq-Sugpiaq people, who are indigenous to Alaska, have inhabited the area surrounding the archipelago for approximately 7,500 years, according to Alaska Public Media. The word Suu'aq (Shuyak) in Alutiiq translates to "rising out of the water." "I think we found that one village that had 11 house pits, probably had two to three hundred people living in it, you know, 300 years ago," Patrick Saltonstall, the archaeology curator with the Alutiiq Museum, told the outlet. "Shuyak has always sort of been a place where I think it seems like there were fewer people up there. But finding that, you know what your preconceptions are and what you actually find often don't match." Shuyak Island played a significant role in Alaska's history, in particular, due to at least two established Alutiiq villages. Russian fur trader Gregorii Shelikov destroyed one of the villages — and by the late 1700s, there were no communities left on the island, the outlet reported. The island was later home to a herring saltery and family fishing operations providing food for human consumption and animal feed for a "growing fox farming industry" in the 1920s. The Sklaroff & Sons smoked fish establishment from 1892, in Port William on the south end of Shuyak Island, was turned into a fish processing facility or cannery, which was operated by the Washington Fish and Oyster Company until 1976. Following the 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, parts of the island's archaeological sites were at risk of erosion. The new discoveries have indicated that this threat is less prevalent. "What we found up there is that's not happening anymore. All the sites are much more stable," Saltonstall told Alaska Public Media. "You see grass growing on all the beaches, and it demonstrates…the land sank in 1964 and it's rebounded ever since, and it's outpacing sea level rise up there." The museum is doing survey work in partnership with the Shuyak Island State Park and Alaska State Parks system. The museum plans to update the archaeology display at the Big Bay Ranger station on the island to reflect the new artifacts discovered on the island, according to the outlet. Chinese research ship detected off Alaskan coast, Coast Guard says

A China-flagged research vessel was detected Friday off the coast of Alaska, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard reported Saturday that the Xue Long 2, an icebreaker, was detected about 290 nautical miles north of Utqiagvik, Alaska, in the U.S. Arctic. The Xue Long 2 is operated by China's Polar Research Institute. The ship was in the U.S.'s Extended Continental Shelf, or ECS, which is a portion of the continental shelf that goes beyond 200 miles nautical miles off the coast, according to the State Department. The ship was determined to be 130 nautical miles inside the ECS. "The U.S. has exclusive rights to conserve and manage the living and non-living resources of its ECS," the Coast Guard said in its news release. A Coast Guard C-130J Hercules, a long-range surveillance aircraft, responded to the ship. The Coast Guard also released a photo of the vessel. "The U.S. Coast Guard, alongside partners and other agencies, vigilantly monitors and responds to foreign government vessel activity in and near U.S. waters to secure territorial integrity and defend sovereign interests against malign state activity," said Rear Adm. Bob Little, commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Arctic District, in a statement. CBS News reached out the Coast Guard for clarification on how it was dealing with the vessel. Earlier this week, Canada's CBC News reported that the Canadian military was monitoring the movements of the Xue Long 2 in the Arctic. In a statement provided to the CBC Tuesday, Maj. Alexander Naraine, a spokesperson for the military's joint operations centre said that the Xue Long 2 was "not currently in Canadian territorial waters." Canada was using a Lockheed CP-140 Aurora aircraft based out of Alaska to "actively" monitor the Chinese ship, Naraine said. This comes after four Russian military planes were spotted and tracked flying near the Alaskan coast Tuesday by North American Aerospace Defense Command. The aircraft flew through a section of international airspace called the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone. While the Alaska ADIZ is considered part of international airspace, it is defined as an area where sovereign U.S. airspace ends but "that requires the ready identification of all aircraft in the interest of national security," according to NORAD. In January, American and Canadian fighter jets were scrambled after Russian warplanes were also spotted in the Arctic, NORAD said. The Russian warplanes remained in international airspace. And in July 2024, the U.S. intercepted several Chinese or Russian bombers near the Alaskan coast. At the time, a U.S. defense officials said it marked the first time ever that Russian and Chinese aircraft have jointly entered the Alaska ADIZ, and the first time Chinese H-6s have encroached off Watson, Emily Mae Czachor and Stephen Smith contributed to this report.
