Mobile to bid ‘iconic' ship farewell

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — The SS United States Conservancy is in the early design phase of a land-based museum to display artifacts and showcase the history of the SS United States. Mobile business employee injured while trying to stop alleged shoplifter The museum's exact location has not yet been decided, though renderings have begun based on dimensions of potential property in partnership with Okaloosa County. (Courtesy of SS United States Conservancy) Warren Jones with the Conservancy Board of Directors said a meeting will take place this week with top donors to push forward the presented designs. 'The county has, again, partnered with us so we'll help out with the search for property and bounce around some ideas on that as well, and then they're involved in the transport of funnels to a temporary location,' Jones said. 'We've looked at the exhibits, and we've kind of mapped out what we would exhibit in the museum. There are thousands and thousands of artifacts for this museum, and they are all over the East Coast.' Having launched 74 years ago, the SS United States holds the transatlantic speed records during her maiden voyage and has carried over 1 million passengers during her time on the water before being docked in 1996. 'The record's never been broken, both eastbound and westbound, never been broken,' Jones added. 'It will never be matched, and so it's really that, you know, we, the SS United States Conservancy, have tried since 2011 to have this ship repurposed as a multi-purpose stationary ship, hotel rooms, event spaces, eateries, as such.' PPE ‘fashion show' highlights need for a safe fit for women

This story was originally published on Construction Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Construction Dive newsletter. ORLANDO, Fla. — At the far end of the expo hall, a crowd gathered for a demonstration at last week's American Society of Safety Professionals 2025 Conference + Expo. Seats around a catwalk promptly filled, leaving many attendees standing to view the show. Booths a few feet away displayed personal protective equipment and other safety solutions, but the catwalk promptly became the center of attention. The models strutting by didn't wear the latest fashion from name brands, however. They donned high visibility vests, flame-resistant outwear, work gloves, eye protection and work boots. The women showcasing the gear hammed it up, posing and getting the crowd to respond by eliciting laughter and cheers. The day before, the catwalk stage had served as the space for a panel of safety experts highlighting the need for more properly fitting PPE for women in the trades. The timing of the insight was invaluable, as at the end of last year, OSHA enacted a standard requiring construction employers to provide properly fitting PPE to workers. 'The real question is: is the PPE that you're procuring and buying and using creating hazards rather than preventing them?' asked panelist Amy Roosa, founder of The Safety Rack, an advocacy group focused on women's PPE. Loose-fitting gear can create problems — such as a baggy vest or a glove snagging on equipment or machinery — and many times tradesworkers don't know the danger it poses. 'Women still don't know what all is available to them,' said Kelly Franko, co-founder of the Alliance of Women's Safety Apparel Manufacturers, another advocacy group. If women do know what they need from PPE, there is still a question of access. Women won't always speak up for fear of the stigma of complaining, said Nicole Randall, vice president of the ISEA Foundation, another group raising awareness around fall safety. And each panelist emphasized that the issue does not just impact women, but also workers of any size who do not fit into the standard gear. At the event, the speakers' final call to action urged equipment manufacturers to ask more questions of their clients, and in turn, for safety managers to speak up. Bulk orders can save money, but often, one-size-fits-all doesn't cut it. 'If you're going to say your fall protection is unisex, you better come at me with some data,' Roosa said. Mobile apartment complex overrun with trash and critters

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) —Garbage piling up, safety hazards, and wildlife roaming the grounds have all become commonplace, a tenant from the Crossings at Pinebrook says. Residents wake up to find Jubilee in Fairhope Residents say their complaints have been ignored, but News 5 was able to get some answers. Management blames the problem on a broken trash compactor and says they are working to resolve the problem. One resident who did not want her name or face shown said the trash problem is out of control. 'Mattresses, tires, like bags of like, seafood boils everywhere. So it smells, it smells bad, but think about it. It's so hot, and then you've got trash down in the sun,' she said. She said the garbage is also attracting some unwanted visitors around the apartment. 'We've had vultures, raccoons, possums. People think I'm joking, I say, no, no. They literally fly over the trash. This isn't a zoo,' she explained. While the area by the trash compactor has the largest amount of garbage, this resident said it's not her only concern, as there are a number of other trash bags, littered items, and food scattered throughout the complex. 'You see how filthy this is? I hate to say it, but this is a good day for this apartment,' she said. The garbage isn't the only complaint she's had that's gone unaddressed by the apartment. There's a number of safety issues including downed stop signs, huge potholes, and exposed wires throughout the complex. 'There's supposed to be a stop sign right there. And this is a safety issue because, again, not just kids, but people walk through here all the time,' she continued. Residents say they just want basic upkeep before conditions get any worse. Foshee Residential is the management company for the Crossings at Pinebrook. A spokesperson shared a message with us that was sent to residents today. 'We understand that the recent issues with the trash collection have been frustrating for everyone, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused,' the statement read.
