Pakistan face fifth bowler dilemma ahead of West Indies decider
Pakistan's recent ODI form has been inconsistent. They exited the ICC World Cup 2023 in the group stage, including a first-ever ODI loss to Afghanistan, a result that saw Babar Azam replaced as captain by Mohammad Rizwan.
Rizwan oversaw series victories away to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, but the side fell short in the home tri-nation final against New Zealand and failed to progress beyond the first round of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Pakistan later lost an away series to New Zealand and are now in the Caribbean, with their current series against the West Indies level at 1-1 ahead of the decider.

Pakistan's part-time duo of Saim Ayub and Salman Agha conceded a combined 66 runs in seven wicketless overs as West Indies cruised home. "You could say our fifth bowler gave away too many runs but in recent years, Salman Agha and Saim Ayub have both bowled well for us," Rizwan said after the match. "Saim didn't have the best day today, but he performed well in the T20Is. That's just part of the game." Rizwan said they could not read the conditions and several rain delays did not help their cause. "Honestly, the weather forecast has been completely different from expectations, and it's hard to read. "We're keeping our options open and will finalise the XI after assessing the conditions." The match was reduced to 35 overs due to rain interruptions. Chasing a target of 181, West Indies got an early scare as Hasan Ali dismissed opener Brandon King for just one run in the second over. Hasan struck again shortly after to remove Evin Lewis, who scored seven, leaving the hosts struggling at 12-2 inside 3.1 overs. The West Indies middle order came under pressure after Keacy Carty fell cheaply for 16, handing Abrar Ahmed his first wicket. Sherfane Rutherford then launched an aggressive assault, putting Pakistan's bowlers under severe pressure. Abrar conceded 20 runs in Rutherford's over as the fourth-wicket partnership flourished. Mohammad Nawaz broke the partnership by dismissing Shai Hope, who made 32 off 35 balls, including two boundaries and a six. Speaking at an event in Ahmedabad, Ganguly said he is unaware of any such decision and believes performance should be the only factor in deciding their ODI futures. "I'm not aware of this, can't comment on this. Whoever does well will play. If they do well, they should continue," Ganguly remarked. Ganguly also lauded their contributions to Indian cricket, noting their crucial roles in helping India win the Champions Trophy earlier this year. "It's difficult to say. But Kohli's one-day record is phenomenal, even Rohit Sharma's. Both of them are phenomenal in white-ball cricket," said. Earlier, Kohli and Sharma are reportedly set to retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs) later this year, following their recent retirements from Test and T20 formats. The veteran duo, who have already stepped away from Tests and T20 internationals, Kohli retiring from Tests in May 2025 and both calling time on their T20I careers after India's 2024 T20 World Cup victory, continue to represent India in the 50-over format. According to a report, both players are expected to feature for the last time in their careers during the upcoming ODI series against Australia scheduled for October 2025. Despite their continued presence in ODIs, speculation is mounting that this series might mark the final chapter of their international careers in the format. Reports suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not currently see Kohli and Sharma as part of the core plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Reports claim that to remain in contention for the national ODI squad beyond this series, both players may be required to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's premier domestic one-day tournament, starting December 2025. This move could effectively push Kohli and Sharma towards announcing their retirement from international cricket after the Australia series. A source told Indian media, "Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma do not fit into our plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. "With more than two years to go before the event and both players nearing 40 by then, there needs to be a clear strategy. We also need to nurture young talent for the future."
