24 families evacuated as heavy rain floods Rourkela

Time of India3 days ago
Rourkela: Twenty-four families have been evacuated and provided shelter in a govt school following severe waterlogging in Rourkela's Balughat area. The evacuation was carried out in two phases after heavy downpour on Sunday night.
"Twenty families were evacuated on Monday evening followed by four more on Tuesday. All affected families are currently sheltered at the Government UP School in Balughat," said A Patnaik, assistant commissioner, Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC).
The continuous rainfall, which lasted until Monday morning, exposed the city's inadequate drainage system, leaving several areas submerged and triggering public outrage.
Key areas affected include the TCI underpass, Dandiapalli, Dayanand Nagar, Biswakarma Vihar, Nala Road, Malgodown, and Tungritola.
The Rourkela railway station was hit hard with parking spot no. 5, a Smart City project, witnessing waist-deep water. Numerous vehicles, including cars and auto-rickshaws, were partially submerged, causing engine failures. The flooding also disrupted school transportation.
Collector (Sundargarh) Manoj Satywan Mahajan accompanied by RMC commissioner Ashutosh Kulkarni visited the worst-affected slum areas to assess the situation and oversee relief operations. The RMC has deployed sanitation teams with earthmovers to create water drainage passages while also distributing cooked meals among affected residents.

Heavy rainfall likely over western ghats till July 22; parts of north TN may get respite from heat

Intense rainfall, driven by two active weather systems, is expected to continue over Western Ghats districts of Tamil Nadu till July 22. Heavy rainfall may also cover some northern districts on Saturday, offering temporary relief from the heat. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued orange alert for Nilgiris and Ghat areas of Coimbatore till July 20, with heavy downpour up to 24. 4 cm is possible in isolated places. While light to moderate rainfall is expected to cover up to 50% of weather stations across the State till July 22, districts including Theni and Tenkasi, are likely to get heavy rainfall till Monday. A yellow alert has been issued for parts of north TN, including Tiruvallur and Vellore, with heavy rainfall up to 13 cm on Saturday. Officials of the RMC said the active Southwest monsoon conditions would influence an increase in rainfall over the State and Puducherry for a week. Head (additional in-charge), RMC, Chennai, said an upper air circulation over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and an east-west trough near Chennai latitude would trigger rainfall. Intense downpour in Kerala would spill over into the adjoining western ghats region. The intensity of rainfall in north TN districts would vary depending on the position of the weather systems. In coastal belt, prevailing westerlies when interacting with sea breeze triggered convective activity and thunderstorms during afternoon and evening hours. The wet weather is likely to influence a drop in maximum temperature in a few pockets of TN and Puducherry, she said. However, interior parts like Madurai and Karur may have to endure scorching heat as the impact of weather systems may not penetrate. On Friday, Madurai and Thanjavur recorded a day temperature of 39 degree Celsius, which was the hottest temperature recorded in TN for the day. Chennai, however, recorded a cooler day with maximum temperature remaining slightly below normal of 34 degrees Celsius. Rainfall continued in places, including Coimbatore, Valparai, Krishnagiri and Erode on Friday. The RMC has forecast light to moderate rainfall to continue in Chennai on Saturday and the maximum temperature will be around 35-36 degree Celsius.

Moderate rains break week long monsoon break

1 2 Nagpur: Monsoon activity resumed over Nagpur after a seven-day break with many areas receiving good rainfall for nearly two hours on Thursday. However, the RMC surface observatory at Sonegaon recorded just 4mm of rainfall, probably due to fewer showers in parts of southwest Nagpur. Strong spells lashed the rest of the city and even the outskirts, leaving many roads and colonies waterlogged within a short time. Besides Nagpur, Gondia recorded 23mm of rainfall, while precipitation also occurred over Chandrapur, Bramhapuri, and Wardha. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather warnings highlighting active monsoon conditions over Vidarbha and Nagpur during from July 17 to 23. The week is expected to witness varying intensities of rainfall, and thunderstorms. On Friday, the region is likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning, accompanied by gusty winds at isolated places. Fairly widespread rainfall is expected over some parts of Vidarbha. IMD scientist posted at RMC Nagpur, Rizwan Ahmed, said, "A depression is located over northeast Madhya Pradesh adjoining southeast Uttar Pradesh. Also, the monsoon trough is located north of its normal position, which supports active monsoonal conditions in north and central India. While not intense, occasional showers and high humidity will prevail," he said. From July 21 to 23, the rainfall activity is expected to increase significantly with widespread rain likely across Vidarbha, including isolated heavy downpour over some parts, Ahmed said. Day temperatures across the region will hover between 30°C to 33°C, with minimum temperatures around 24°C to 26°C. High humidity will persist throughout the week, contributing to discomfort even during cloudy periods, as per the forecast. Farmers should plan irrigation activities accordingly, and local authorities are advised to ensure drainage clearance and be prepared for a quick response in case of intense rainfall episodes. Waterlogging At Nagpur Railway Station Entrance Passengers were badly inconvenienced on Thursday afternoon after rainwater flooded the entrance of Nagpur railway station. Major upgrade works are ongoing at the railway station, adding to the chaos. Last week, tracks were flooded following heavy rains, but train traffic remained unaffected. On Thursday, railway officials said water didn't enter the railway station but only the front portion. Officials said civic authorities were informed about the flooding, which was cleared to resume smooth passenger movement.
