A trip to Singapore isn't complete without taking a look at Marina Bay Sands. The massive resort, made up of three 650-foot-tall skyscrapers and connected by a boat-like skybridge, is a symbol of the city-state's modernism and prosperity. Such a pricey expansion to such a national icon is, predictably, a hot-button topic.
Marina Bay Sands is set to receive a fourth tower, plus a 15,000-seat arena. The makeover broke ground this month under the looming specter of public scrutiny.

'The (Urban Redevelopment) Authority repeatedly said, 'This is our icon; our people of Singapore love this, and we cannot do anything that's going to compromise it,' Safdie told CNN.
The 87-year-old Israeli architect told the outlet that his goal was to design an edifice that was complimentary to the originals, while bearing its own identity. The current iteration of Marina Bay Sands, owned by the US casino and resort company Las Vegas Sands, attracted 38 million visitors and the equivalent of $1.7 billion in business spending last year, according to CNN.
Safdie, whose firm is headquartered in Massachusetts, said connecting the fourth tower to the other three was hardly considered. Instead, the 55-story extension will be set apart on an adjacent plot. He described the new tower as the dot of an exclamation point.

'The buildings look related,' Safdie told the outlet. 'They're in the same family.'
The new tower will comprise of 570 suites, as well as luxury retail and gaming facilities. The facade, twisting at a 45-degree angle, tops off with a 76,000-square-foot 'Skyloop,' featuring the resort's famous infinity-edge pools, an observatory, restaurants and lush rooftop gardens.
The fourth tower will share the original resort's panoramic views of the Marina Bay and Singapore Strait.
A massive event venue, designed by the team behind the Las Vegas Sphere, will sit neatly in between the two structures. The building will span approximately 200,000 square feet of conference and exhibition space, with a 15,000-seat sports and entertainment arena at its core.
The new development aims to capture more tourism revenue from so-called 'Mice' travelers, according to CNBC, who flock to the city for meetings and conferences, as well as leisure travelers trekking through Asia.

Chinese nationals arrested for allegedly shipping AI chips to China
Two Chinese nationals were charged with illegally shipping to China tens of millions of dollars' worth of sensitive microchips used in artificial intelligence (AI) applications, the Justice Department announced Tuesday. Chuan Geng and Shiwei Yang are accused of 'knowingly and willfully' exporting chips, including Nvidia H100s, to China without obtaining the required licensing from the Department of Commerce, from October 2022 to July 2025. Tha defendants' company, ALX Solutions Inc., was founded in 2022, shortly after the U.S. imposed sweeping export restrictions on the advanced computer chips to China, according to the DOJ, which cited an affidavit filed with the criminal complaint. On more than 20 occasions, according to the DOJ, the company sent restricted technology to freight-forwarding companies in Malaysia and Singapore, which then purportedly sent the shipments to China. The California-based company received payments from companies based in China and Hong Kong, according to the DOJ, but never from the Malaysian and Singaporean companies. The defendants are also accused of mislabeling a shipment as 'subject to federal laws and regulations' in the hopes of avoiding inspection, but the chip actually required a license, according to the DOJ press release. That chip, the complainant says, is the 'most powerful GPU chip on the market' and is 'designed specifically for AI applications,' like 'to develop self-driving cars, medical diagnosis systems, and other AI-powered applications,' the DOJ release said. The defendants were charged with violating the Export Control Reform Act, a felony that carries up to 20 years in federal prison. Yang, who lives illegally in the U.S. after overstaying her visa, was arrested on Saturday. Geng, a lawful permanent U.S. resident, surrendered to federal authorities later that day. They appeared late Monday before a magistrate judge, and Geng was released on $250,000 bond. The arraignment was set for Sept. 11. The DOJ said law enforcement searched their company's office last week and seized the defendants' phones, which 'revealed incriminating communications between the defendants, including communications about shipping export-controlled chips to China through Malaysia to evade U.S. export laws.'

Swiss president rushes to US to avert steep tariffs
Switzerland's president was in Washington on Tuesday in a last-minute push to stop steep new tariffs, but with no appointment to plead her case to US President Donald Trump. Switzerland faces a 39-percent duty, one of the highest among the dozens of economies that will be hit by new tariffs expected to come into force from Thursday. President Karin Keller-Sutter and Economy Minister Guy Parmelin were visiting Washington "to facilitate meetings with the US authorities at short notice and hold talks with a view to improving the tariff situation for Switzerland," the government said in a statement. "The aim is to present a more attractive offer to the United States in a bid to lower the level of reciprocal tariffs for Swiss exports, taking US concerns into account." But a White House official told AFP there was "no meeting with the President scheduled at this time." Trump had originally threatened in April to slap a 31-percent tariff on Switzerland. But he surprised the export-driven country last week when he decided to hike the rate to 39 percent despite numerous discussions between Swiss and US officials aimed at reaching a deal. The Swiss government noted that the country will be hit by much higher tariffs than what other wealthy economies, such as Britain, Japan or the European Union, are facing. The government "reaffirmed that it was keen to pursue talks with the United States on the tariff situation," and the president and economy minister were visiting Washington "for this reason," Tuesday's statement said. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, however, told CBS television on Sunday that the tariffs on global trading partners, which are coming into force this week, "are pretty much set."
