The Seattle Mariners look as good this year as they have in recent memory. They're led by a loaded pitching staff and the emergence of Cal Raleigh as a generational slugger.
But they're going to need to make some moves ahead of the trade deadline if they want a real shot at winning the World Series.
ESPN's Jeff Passan recently listed the Mariners as one of the best fits in a potential blockbuster trade for Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suárez. Suárez played with the Mariners in 2022 and 2023.

PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks hits a three run home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the first inning at Chase Field on July 20, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. More"Suárez is in a contract year and playing like one of the best players in baseball. Only Cal Raleigh and Aaron Judge have more home runs than his 35," Passan wrote. "Despite turning 34 years old before the trade deadline, Suárez is sitting near career highs in isolated power and wRC+ (which measures overall offensive performance).
"His fielding metrics have declined in recent years, but he's still an acceptable defender at third base. Even if the Diamondbacks don't offload all their free agents-to-be, Suárez could be moved because they've got Jordan Lawlar raking in Triple-A and primed to take over at third."
The Mariners could be the perfect landing spot for Suárez. He's familiar with the team, front office, coaching staff, and city. Adding him to a lineup with Raleigh hitting as well as he is would be a nightmare for opposing pitchers.
There are bound to be a lot of teams in pursuit of Suárez, though. The New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, and Detroit Tigers are three of the top teams with rumored interest in the star.
If Suárez continues to be the hottest hitter in the game over the next week, the Diamondbacks should land a haul in return for him. The Mariners have the talented prospects to make a deal happen.

Unswept Reds: Lodolo goes distance in shutout win at Nats as Cincinnati again avoids series sweep

Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Nick Lodolo went the distance and kept the Cincinnati Reds as the only team in the majors that hasn't been swept this season. Lodolo threw a four-hitter for his first career shutout and the Reds snapped a three-game losing streak, including the first two games of their series at Washington, with a 5-0 win in the finale against the Nationals on Wednesday. 'We needed a win. ... I don't care how,' Reds manager Terry Francona said. 'Some games feel like they bigger than others. They're not, but they feel like it. But I'm glad we won today that's what we came for.' The Reds (53-50), who have an off day Thursday, have played 33 series this season without being swept to set a franchise record. It was the fifth time this year they won the finale after losing the first two in a three-game series. Cincinnati took two out of three at the New York Mets coming out of the All-Star break to match the 32 series in a row by the 1970 Reds, who went on to win the first of five National League pennants in a seven-season span capped by back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and '76. That 1970 team was swept in two games at the Chicago Cubs in its 33rd series of the season. Lodolo (8-6) struck out eight without a walk, throwing 76 of his career-high 105 pitches for strikes. The Reds have won seven of his nine starts since the beginning of June. 'Lodolo showed up big for us to be able to come out here and, you know, obviously not get swept, but just kind of get us back on track to feeling like what we feel like we can do as a ball club,' right fielder Jake Fraley said. 'He's a phenomenal ball player. He's been pitching his butt off all year. And this is just another start that he's been doing all year.' It was the first time in Lodolo's 68 career starts that the 27-year-old left-hander pitched into the ninth inning, and the first time he went at least seven innings in back-to-back starts. It was his second career complete game, but the other was a rain-shortened 4-2 win in six innings over Minnesota on June 18. 'I got the rainout CG, but now I got a real one,' Lodolo said. 'It's pretty cool. I feel like I had everything kind of working for the most part. Good defense, I got some early outs that helped me stay in the game that long.' Cincinnati took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, when Elly Del La Cruz had a leadoff walk, stole second base and scored on Fraley's single. It stayed that way until the Reds added two runs in the eighth before center fielder Jacob Young's inning-ending leaping catch at the wall to take a homer away from Will Benson. 'I know the score ended up 5-0. That wasn't a 5-0 game, that was 1-0, (Lodolo) had to pitch through that for the majority of the game,' Francona said. 'I thought as the game went he got stronger, which is a really good sign. You know, his breaking ball has been a weapon. And as he holds his velocity the entire game he threw strikes. He just really pitched a great game.' ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3

Streaking Toronto Blue Jays giving Proline players much to ponder

The Toronto Blue Jays are giving Proline players plenty to ponder these days. Toronto returned from the all-star break in impressive fashion, sweeping the San Francisco Giants over the weekend. The Jays opened the series with a 4-0 victory Friday night before finishing up with wins by scores of 6-3 and 8-6. According to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp., 69 per cent of players backed Toronto's win Saturday, with 53 per cent having the Blue Jays at +1.5 runs. Seventy-nine per cent had them over at 7.5. Sunday's series-ending victory was supported by 63 per cent of bettors while 51 per cent had Toronto +1.5 runs. But only 48 successfully had the Jays over at 8.5. Heading into the second half of the baseball season, the Los Angeles Dodgers are the top World Series outright pick at 32 per cent, followed by Toronto at 21 per cent. The Detroit Tigers are a distant third at 11per cent. Toronto is a solid 62 per cent pick to win the American League East outright, comfortably ahead of the New York Yankees (21 per cent). Meanwhile, in golf, American Scottie Scheffler cemented his status as the world's top-ranked player by winning the British Open by four strokes. Just 12 per cent of bettors had Scheffler winning the event, while 29 per cent had him earning a top 10 finish. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 23, 2025. Error!
