Afaq, Tabassum, Shah in snowshoeing finals
In the 12th Special Olympics World Winter Games, Pakistan's snowshoeing athletes Muhammad Afaq, Tabassum Nasir, and Shah Galoon have qualified for the finals in the 100-meter race and the 4x100-meter relay divisioning race.
On Thursday, March 13, all 10 Pakistani athletes will be in action in cross-country skiing and snowshoeing events. In the final round of the 50-meter cross-country skiing race, Pakistan's two skiers, Rovina Qurban and Muneeb Ur Rehman, will compete for medals. Both athletes will also participate in the 100-meter final race on March 15.
In the 200-meter snowshoeing final races on Thursday, four Pakistani female athletes and three male athletes will compete, while Moazzam Iqbal will be in action in the 800-meter race. The 100-meter and relay snowshoeing races will be held on March 14, while the 400-meter race is scheduled for March 15.
Special Olympics Pakistan Chairperson Ronak Lakhani met with the Pakistani athletes and congratulated them on reaching the finals. She said that this achievement is the result of five years of hard work, and now the athletes have made it to the finals of the World Winter Games. She urged the people of Pakistan to pray for the success of these special athletes.
Meanwhile, Gonzalo Escobar from Special Olympics Chile earned the first medal of the Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025!
Gonzolo, who traveled to Turin from Santiago, Chile, competed in the Advanced Giant Slalom Snowboarding Final where he finished in first place with a time of 1:40.370, almost 4 seconds faster than his closest competitor.
The snowboarding competition began at Melezet in Bardonecchia early Tuesday, 11 March, morning with athletes taking to the slopes for warmups and quickly getting into action. Escobar competed in Divisioning earlier in the day, finishing the heat with a time of 49.160 putting him in the D01 groupthe top level of the snowboarding competition for both men and women at the Turin Games.
After exiting the starting shoot, Gonzolo took off down the mountain with record speeds, making swift cuts as he maneuvered himself through the gates. As he neared the finish, Gonzolo stayed in a tucked position gaining him as much pace as he could before crossing the finish line to clinch the gold.
He was honored with his medal at an award ceremony later in the day along with the medalist from the Intermediate and Novice Giant Slalom Finals.
This is Gonzolo's first World Games experience, but not his first international competition. In 2020, he competed in the Unified X Games in Aspen, Colorado with Special Olympics and got a taste of what it feels like to compete on a world stage.

F-Class shooter Mohsin Nawaz honoured with Tamgha-e-Imtiaz
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's F-Class long-range shooting ace, Mohsin Nawaz, has been conferred the prestigious Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport and a series of remarkable international achievements. President Asif Ali Zardari announced the honor, which will be officially presented at the Pakistan Day investiture ceremony on March 23, 2026, at the Aiwan-e-Sadr. Nawaz, honored in the sports category, joins other distinguished athletes whose accomplishments have elevated Pakistan's profile globally. Hailing from Faisalabad and also a seasoned sports psychologist, Nawaz has been instrumental in putting Pakistan on the world map of competitive shooting. His recent feats include winning silver in the Day One Aggregate and bronze in the 1000-yard event at the 2024 European Long Range Shooting Championship, alongside a top 15 overall ranking. He also secured silver in the 300 yards category at the 2024 F Class Imperial Championship, placing in the top eight overall. These victories brought his international medal tally to 10—making him the first Pakistani civilian to medal in these European categories. Nawaz's breakthrough came in 2023 when he won silver at the European Long Range Shooting Championship, equaling the European record at 800 yards. Earlier, he dominated the 2022 Western Bisley Long Range Championship with three gold and two silver medals, and earned podium finishes at major events in the USA, South Africa, and Europe since 2016. In a testament to his stature, Nawaz holds lifetime memberships with both the National Rifle Association (NRA) UK and USA and is Pakistan's first holder of NRA USA mid and long-range classifications. He also serves as brand ambassador for KAHLES Sports Optics and Peregrine Bullets, and is actively working to develop Pakistan's shooting infrastructure, mentor emerging talent, and advocate for policy reforms in the sport. Pak taekwondo athletes grab medals at Kazakhstan Open
Pakistan taekwondo team aim at making the country proud at the Kazakhstan Open International Taekwondo Championship 2025. PHOTO COURTESY: PAK TAEKWONDO Pakistani taekwondo athletes Noman Khan and Hamza Omer concluded their campaign at Kazakhstan Open 2025 with two bronze medals. Noman got his medal in the -63 kg event, while Hamza had his podium finish in the +87 kg men's events in Astana. The Kazakhstan Open International Taekwondo Championship was scheduled from 14-16 August 2025. The G1-ranked event will see participation from 21 nations, including Pakistan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Nepal, UAE, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and teams competing under the WT Refugee flag. The Pakistani contingent is led by Lt. Col Zeeshan Aslam as the head of the yeam. The squad includes, national head coach Master Yousef Karami along with the athletes, Shahzaib Khan (-54 kg), Hamza Omar Saeed (+87 kg), Noman Khan (-68 kg), Abu Bakar Siddique (-58 kg), Kaif Anwar (-74 kg), Arbaz Khan (-63 kg), and female athlete Fatemah Zahra in (-49 kg). Shahzeb reached the quarterfinal but lost the match, and Abu Bakar, Arbaz, and Fatemah faced the loses after booking their places among the last-eight of their events as well. Kaif, however, lost in his first fight. Team head Lt. Col Zeeshan Aslam had expressed confidence in the squad's preparations and he was confident of the athletes' ability to win medals, "The team has been training intensively, with high spirits. Competing during the month of Independence adds to the motivation. Our goal is to win gold for Pakistan." Meanwhile, coach Karami added: "Athletes have also taken part in joint training sessions alongside other international teams, gaining valuable exposure ahead of the high-profile event." Pakistani athletes were in action on 14th August in their respective weight categories.
