Study confirms women in politics receive more attacks and abuse on social media than men

The research, which analysed millions of posts, also found that the language aimed at politicians in the UK contained more abusive words than those in other countries
Female politicians in Europe receive more identity-based attacks than other politicians, according to new research. The study analysed 23 million posts on X addressed to politicians in the UK, Spain, Germany and the US, and found that women in Europe experience online "incivility" regardless of how well known they are.

Incivility has been defined as posts which contain hate speech or assign stereotypes, undermine or exclude a social group, or threaten someone's rights. It also includes posts that name-call (such as 'weirdo' or 'idiot'), cast aspersions ('liar' or 'traitor'), use pejorative speak, sarcasm, and all-caps. It comes after Nigel Farage unveiled an ex-Tory who made racist remark on WhatsApp as its newest defector.

This incivility faced by female politicians can include everything from misogynistic and sexist comments to violent threats, or attempts to defame or humiliate.

Lead researcher of the study, Maarja Lühiste, associate professor of politics at Newcastle University, said: "We noticed that female candidates targeted with abusive language typically receive more morality-focused words, such as 'vile,' 'shame,' 'shameful,' 'disgraceful,' 'hypocrite,' and 'deluded.''
Lühiste added: "They also receive messages with more references to personal attacks—including words like 'kill,' 'destroy,' and 'rape'—rather than simple swear words."

The study, published in Politics & Gender by Cambridge University Press, found that the posts aimed at Spanish and German politicians appeared to use fewer deliberately abusive words than those aimed at US and UK politicians.
Lühiste explained: 'Both men and women politicians experience incivility and, overall, the more famous they are, the more abuse they receive. BUT women in Europe receive uncivil tweets even when they're not well known.'

She added: 'Political culture and electoral rules may matter, too: German and Spanish politicians in our sample receive less incivility than their UK and US counterparts. And the incivility in less personalised systems - especially in Germany - is relatively 'polite' compared to the other countries in our sample.'
Multiple female politicians in the UK have opened up about experiencing online abuse. In 2019, Heidi Allen said she would be stepping down as MP after experiencing 'utterly dehumanising' abuse.

Nicky Morgan also announced that she would no longer be serving as an MP that same year, saying: "I think the role of being an MP has changed. I think the abuse, because of the platforms, because of how strongly people feel about the current political situation, that has changed enormously in the almost 10 years since I started."
Angela Rayner has previously spoken up about facing such abuse that she barely read online posts. In 2023, she said she believed female politicians experienced more abuse, explaining: "Whether it's a Conservative MP, SNP or Labour it doesn't matter, it's mainly women that get the abuse. They want to silence us.'
Rayner added: "The one thing I'm asked every time I visit a school is 'how do you deal with the abuse you get?' and that shouldn't be the first question young people ask me."

Nigel Farage accused of spreading ‘unevidenced fears' about asylum seekers

Nigel Farage has been accused by charities of spreading 'unevidenced fears' over asylum seekers in his latest tirade on those who illegally enter the UK on small boats. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, the Reform UK leader claimed foreign migrants made the dangerous crossing 'because they know they have an over 99 per cent chance of staying'. He said they came to be 'looked after' with free healthcare and £49-a-week 'pocket money', adding 'while they are at it probably work illegally either in delivery services or drugs or whatever it may be'. His comments came less than 24 hours after protesters were accused of trying to break into a hotel housing asylum seekers in Canary Wharf. In response to a reporter's question, Mr Farage rejected he was steering people into fear to persuade them to vote for Reform. He said: 'We have to recognise something, there are some people who come from certain cultures that pose a danger to our society.' But his comments have been met with a strong reaction from charities. Care4Calais, a British charity supporting asylum seekers in France, said Mr Farage's 'populist politics' were a danger to UK communities. Chief executive Steve Smith said: "It's hardly surprising that the politician who inflamed last summer's race riots would spread unevidenced fear about people seeking sanctuary again. 'His [Mr Farage's] form of populism doesn't require facts, it is built on dangerous, unsourced, ill-informed divisive soundbites. It sows division in our communities, and like last summer race riots, it puts the lives of people seeking sanctuary in danger." Hope Not Hate, an advocacy group that campaigns against racism, also reacted to the comments at the press conference, held to unveil Reform UK's policy for the criminal justice system. A charity spokesperson said: 'Farage trades on fear because it galvanises his supporter base and keeps the spotlight on the issues he wants to exploit, immigration and 'law and order'. By talking up crime he positions himself as the lone strong-man solution. 'However, Reform's approach to law and order is deeply hypocritical. Reform figures have excused rioters at anti-migrant protests, and even praised vandalism of ULEZ cameras. It's cuffs for opponents and leniency for friends. " The office of Sadiq Khan also responded to a remark made by Mr Farage in which he told a reporter she would not walk through the West End of London after 9pm wearing jewellery. The office shared Met Police data that showed the number of robberies had fallen 20 per cent over the past 12 months, compared to a decrease of 12 per cent across London. A spokesperson said: 'Nothing is more important to the Mayor than keeping Londoners safe.' Reform UK has been approached by The Independent for comment. Also at the press conference, Mr Farage claimed there has been a 'cover-up' of details about an alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton. Two men have been charged in relation to the alleged incident in the Warwickshire town. Mr Farage linked a perceived lack of information from police to what happened in Southport last July, saying he wanted to discuss a 'cover-up that in many ways is reminiscent of what happened after the Southport killings last year'.

Residents mystified by naked ‘gimp mask' night stalker

Locals in Lytham, on Lancashire's Fylde coast, say the shadowy visitor has left lace curtains twitching with the identity of the mystery streaker wearing a bondage hood the talk of the town. He was first spotted after being captured on a car dashcam on Westby Street, in the heart of the Victorian resort, at just before 1am on Friday July 18. Locals say the clip was then shared on the street's WhatsApp group and more footage from the night was revealed, which was posted on Facebook and has now gone viral. The clips show a young man, calmly striding down the street, naked but for his trainers and black mask. 'It's a gimp mask, I've watched the footage,' said one resident, who did not want to be named. 'I've no idea what he thinks he's doing,' he added. 'In the days after, we saw a young man, fully clothed, walking around the streets, looking up and around, seemingly checking for cameras. 'We think it's the same man.' The resident, who was stood alongside his wife, said he knew of no 'alternative lifestyle' establishments locally which may provide a clue to the mystery. Locals also said Lytham, unlike its close neighbour Blackpool, does not get stag and hen parties visiting the town. Lancashire Police said the incident took place on Westby Street, Cleveland Road and Bannister Street. A spokesman said: 'We are aware of a concerning video circulating on social media of a naked male wearing a face covering walking around Lytham in the early hours of the morning. 'This incident was not initially reported to police and has only been brought to our attention after it has been viewed on Facebook. 'Fylde Rural Task Force are currently conducting CCTV and house‑to‑house inquiries and would like to reassure you that we are taking this matter seriously.' Officers urged anyone with information or relevant CCTV to contact FyldeRTF@

Man 'banned' from Ryanair after being dragged off flight for 'vaping in toilets'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A passenger was kicked off from a Ryanair flight to the Spanish port city of Alicante for allegedly vaping in the bathroom and setting off the fire alarm. Footage captured by traveller Tristan James Walker shows the 21-year-old being escorted off the plane by six police officers before being hauled into a van on the tarmac. The incident happened on July 3 at Edinburgh Airport as the aircraft was about to leave for Spain. Tristan said the flight was set to depart at 9.45am only for it to be allegedly delayed due to staff sickness. After the alarm sounded, the pilot is said to have informed the suspect that he would be removed from the plane. Tristan told Luxury Travel Daily: 'A young lad in a group happened to set the alarm off for apparently vaping. 'The pilot then came out after the air stewardess explained what happened, and then the pilot stated he would be removed from the plane. 'The young lad waited for over six police officers to come on board. 'He was taken off, he was very calm, did not argue or anything, no drama.' Coincidentally, Tristan said that he later bumped into the man in Benidorm and he revealed more about the repercussions. 'He explained: We then happened to bump into him on Benidorm's famous strip and he told us he just got a caution and was banned from Ryanair.' This is the latest incident involving vaping and smoking on a Ryanair flight this summer. People caught breaking the law usually face flight restrictions and hefty fines of up to £5,000. More Trending A spokesperson for Ryanair told Metro: 'The crew called ahead for police assistance prior to departure after a passenger became disruptive onboard. 'This passenger was offloaded before this flight continued to Alicante. 'Ryanair has a strict zero tolerance policy towards passenger misconduct and will continue to take decisive action to combat unruly passenger behaviour, ensuring that all passengers and crew travel in a safe and respectful environment, without unnecessary disruption. 'This is a matter for local police.' Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page.
